Best Pure Monk Build?

Unread post by sir_blacksoutalot »

There are many ways to build a monk. With BG's custom feats and skill, just wondering about people's favorite builds for a pure level-30 monk.

Okay, let's a allow a 3-level multiclass dip—but no more than that!

What do you got, folks?

Probably a wisdom based one. Fiery Fist <= longer duration, Blazing Aura <= more damage, Stunning Fist DC <= more likely to work, more AC and AB from a single stat <= makes building easier.

Monk 30 with Intuitive Attack and sky-high Wisdom is pretty great. I find it boring though!

Monk 27 / Shadowdancer 3 would give you HiPS which is always useful.

Monk 27 / Blackguard 3 is an option, for Use Poison which is awesome with Umbra's Poison System on BGTSCC, and Aura of Dispair is -2 on saves so your Stunning Fist/Quivering Palm is even more powerful.

Just options!

That could be fun though. Does holding instruments break monk wisdom AC? There is that War Drum with +3 AC...

Monk 20/Cleric 3/Sacred Fist 7 is pretty good.

You'd go WIS based, of course. Your monk damage will be the equivalent to a Monk 27's, as will your monk speed.

You'll have uses of divine power, which will enable you to have 30 BAB. Your uses won't last long and will be easily dispelled, but you'll have a large quantity of them (even more, if you go STR domain).

If you go with the healing domain, you'll also have access to the heal spell (as you'll have level 5 spells).

You'll also have a fair few RP spells and "clickies" for when "tab" ---> "attack" gets boring.

The most fun I've had with a monk build is a strength monk with northlader hewing and firey fist. Nothing like a monk that can KD anything and do 50 points of damage per hit with crits into the 80s. Still can get a 40 spot and high sense motive for flare.

I've got a wis monk to, but its damage wants to make me cry. Yes, you get great stun DC and blazing, but a lot of critters are immune to stun and the fire damage isn't all that great.

For great effect make it a gnome!! :o

A WIS monk built right can be making 40 dmg avg. per hit.

Still, 50 per hit is very good, and being able to KD anything is also very fun.

What do you do for AC on a STR monk? Is it still viable?

If you make a Monk 27/Fist of the Forest 3...

Roll a human with following starting abilities:

Code: Select all

STR: 15
DEX: 15
CON: 14
INT: 10
WIS: 15
CHA: 8
10 (Base)
+ 4 (Dexterity with +3 item)
+ 4 (Wisdom with +3 item)
+ 2 (Base constitution)
+ 5 (Monk AC bonus)
+ 1 (Luck of Heroes)
+ 3 (Tumble Skill)
+ 4 (Dodge Boots, Requires UMD)
+ 4 (Natural Armor Amulet, Requires UMD)
+ 4 (Deflection Cloak, Requires UMD)
+ 4 (Robes AC bonus)
= 45

The above is not the greatest AC... But you can add a wand of Shield for +4.

You could go for pure Monk 30 and get the following:

Code: Select all

STR: 15
DEX: 16
CON: 10
INT: 10
WIS: 16
CHA: 8
10 (Base)
+ 5 (Dexterity with +4 item/potion)
+ 5 (Wisdom with +4 item/potion)
+ 6 (Monk AC bonus)
+ 1 (Luck of Heroes)
+ 3 (Tumble Skill)
+ 4 (Dodge Boots, Requires UMD)
+ 4 (Natural Armor Amulet, Requires UMD)
+ 4 (Deflection Cloak, Requires UMD)
+ 4 (Robes AC bonus)
= 46

And... well, as pure monk, you will get 30 damage from your unarmed damage dices alone with that Northlander Hewing feat. Hence, you can actually start with lower base strength to raise your AC further.

^^^
That except you go grey orc and start two points higher on STR and wis.. Get 5% faster and look cooler.

Same goes for the sacred fist build. No heal domain go STR domain
