Wait a frickin' minute! Is this true, that Discord-based Chat is valid RP interaction for BGTSCC?

If the IC channels on there are any indication... We will never know.

It's not - as it's not ingame and not everyone has 2 monitors to follow both at the same time.
(Or can read a foreign language fast enough to follow 2 topics )

It's like using Teamspeak for RP.

It appears to me that others are using it as such? Am I wrong?

What Pimple means here is that channel has more OOC in it than IC, thus the majority of its content is actually invalid

But saying "more OOC than IC" implies some IC, which...how can that be valid RP?

There are IC channels to start with, on discord?

Unless it's sanctioned by DMs, I doubt that anything said outside of the game, or on the bgtscc forms with clearly stated IC form in the message, can be considered 'in character'.


edit: heh, just realised ive been posting in them too. as far as i can tell.. if the ones you heard of, are the ones i've seen... these are not actually used for IC stuff. but for some reason... are labeled in character. Mostly trash talk spam appears here.

There are BGTSCC based RP that is based in mediums not on the forum nor in the game server. While Discord has now the largest sum of it spread across separate Discord servers meant for the guilds, this sort of thing predates Discord in individual group Skype chats.

Usually these are guild / group based that are in guild / group halls.

Well that makes it easier to avoid infiltration or unexpected guests xD

We don't control the personal roleplay between individual players or small groups of players, but generally only roleplay that takes place in game or on the forums will be acknowledged by the DM Team.

The game is, of course, the preferred place for roleplay to occur -- but forum roleplay is acceptable and has a long-standing tradition here.

It's about as valid as RP between people through PM's or on other forums. As Maecius says however, only in-game or forum RP is considered "official". Other forms of RP may be used to "expand" upon the story in a non-official way. It's useful to put copies of all this RP on the forums in some way anyway for posterity's sake though.

I'm seeing RP of Intra-Guild type about the Server Metaplot, being used/considered as valid, and it would VERY LIKELY affect my own Guild RP, though I would never be Party to the Discord group.

If Discord and/or Skype are NOT officially recognized as mediums for BGTSCC RP, then they should be OFFICIALLY banned as mediums of RP, because otherwise Players will continue to use them, and that is literally unfair to a) those not invited to the Chat, b) those that do not use the medium(s).

Obviously, this is a thorny issue because of how many current DMs are involved—as players—in this Chat RP.

Skype was already disallowed for Groups to communicate privately while DMs ran Events or just privately to coordinate IC actions so others also IG at the time could not "hear it." Discord channels are essentially doing the same thing...and this is a problem!

So...in response to Maecius, if I am sent a Discord channel chat log as RP "evidence," I am in my right as a Player and Guild admin, to disregard everything RP'd there? And my own disavowal will be supported by the DMs?

I smell a crap storm brewing on this one.

For me I would look at how valid that information is. If it is valid information that was garnered IG through observation and involvement IG at first and then they use Discord as a meeting room to hold a guild meeting because not everyone can log in to the game for a meeting but since it is just talking in the first place a discord meeting should suffice.

What I would say though is that this meeting then needs to be put to paper and logged officially in the forum RP of the guild.

That is of course that the information being talked about was proper information in the first place and not meta information.

It has always been my experience that guilds and groups that use Skype, Discord or any other platform use IC conversations much the same any guild uses IC conversations in teh Forum or IG to be honest.

The forums are more legitimized as it's a point of reference. We don't log chat conversations in the game server (and for a lot of good reasons), so relying on logs and screenshots is the go to, and even that is not guaranteed. Because RP even on the server isn't even a guaranteed point of reference, I'm not sure how the other mediums are any less of a value where RP is concerned.

Granted, roleplaying that you're in the middle of a public space should be in question when your character isn't represented in server, but if it were guild halls which are largely restricted access, the same environment exists as that in Discord/Skype, save for nosy DMs that log on and the same requisite of requiring logs applies when staff is involved.

The medium for RP shouldn't matter.

I think what others are saying is that it needs to be on the forums, if not in game for at least transcript.

If what happens in discord is transcribed in forums, that is no different than it happening in game and transcribed, no?
