As someone who reached lvl 16 with a Phantom/Shadow Dancer, I felt the pain of not having UMD more than anything. I don't know if it would make the class overpowered but I think it could bring it up to par if it somehow received a couple extra feats or some Ki power that would make Dexterity bonus add damage with the duration being affected by wisdom bonus. That's really hopeful thinking.

At least I'm not asking for a free katana feat with a wisdom based BAB feat that can be taken for it with like 10 levels of the class :) Heck I'd almost settle for a phantom feat with the ability to finesse a katana.

Anyway was slightly off topic. Just read the entire thread. Ah this thread has made me want to bring back my phantom.

Phantom can already avoid being hit at all for limited times per day. HiPS/Ki Step spam for boss fights/when mobbed essentially allows you to keep spamming sneak attacks without any chance for the enemies to engage/attack you. Phantom is a very strong class either using the P25/SD4 or P21/A9 builds. The only thing it lacks is the ability to multiclass, which was by design.

Thanks for the reassurance Chad. I'm still following the build you made for me a couple of years ago.

I'm curious as to what a 21 phantom/ 9 assassin may look like.

Looses epic dodge, but does more sneak damage and death attack.

This is what Phantom 21/Assassin 9 would look like.

vs Phantom 25/Shadowdancer 5:

- You lose Epic Dodge.
+ You gain 3d6 Sneak Attack.
+ You gain UMD as a class skills (can use scrolls).
+ You gain spells (Cat's Grace, Fox's Cunning, Freedom of Movement, and Clairvoy/audience being among the useful ones).
+ You gain Death Attack (Paralyze upon Sneak Attack when they fail).
+ You gain Uncanny Dodge.
+ You gain 2 feat slots (no need for dodge/mobility), which I used for Skill Foci in Hide and Move Silent (didn't really need much else, and HiPs is your primary defense. Pays to maximize it.). You also gain an epic feat slot, which you would have overwise used on Epic Dodge.

You do also lose the shadowdancer's shadow daze, summon shadow, and shadow evade. You also gain resistances against poison and improved uncanny dodge, but all of those abilities are fairly useless so I didn't include them in this list.
