Baldur's Gate : The Sword Coast Chronicles : NWN2 Persistent World

I have several friends who have "Game Night" where they still break a case of beer (at least) several pizzas and sit around a table with their character sheet and a bag of dice and have at the ol "pen and paper" adventures.

We all know that this has been implemented digitally to so many degrees where NWN[1,2] are just a couple examples. Of course we can take a stab and bookend NWN with MUD before and thousands (hyperbole?) of browser, mobile, and desktop variations after.

I'm wondering, is there a way to bring THIS amazing community/setting out of the desktop computer and to other devices/platforms?

For example. A BGTSCC DM decides to run a strictly PnP (digital) game, where you access content via your web browser or even tablet app. You register you API and are then able to bring your BGTSCC kick ass Fighter along side a handy rogue and magic missile wielding wizard on a good ol "table top" style, text based, adventure. The DM is able to award XP, gold, items, etc as if you were actually playing NWN2. When you log back in, your advancements are carried in and you can head back to the FAI to rejoice!

Sounds like a lot of work to avoid playing the game, which is kind of the point of the whole BGTSCC community

How would you regulate an API?

1) It divides the DMs time away from the server. Something like this shouldn't be officially supported, because it might imply DMs have a duty to oversee it. At best, it would be volunteer only. And given that DMs have their own work to do on the server, there wouldn't likely be much time. There are DMs who do their own little things on this server from time to time, but those characters used are always segregated from the server and it is rather rare to see it done.

2.1) If it's seperated from the server, rewards and characters should stay seperate. Similar to how certain DMs choose on their own time to run fringe campaigns within nwn2.

2.2) IIRC (could be wrong on this one, an HDM would have to comment) DMs are only allowed to give our items rewards sanctioned by either the DM team or their superiors. XP is given at a rate of 1k/hour an event transpires, to a cap of (5k?). Gold can be given in the place of XP. This would make rewards transfering somewhat difficult even if it was allowed, which it shouldn't and likely wouldn't be, knowing the staff's current policies and prodecures.

3) It would take time, which also would be volunteer only (i.e. no developer would be told to work on this). You'll likely have to develop this yourself or pine a developer to do it for you. Because they have their own things to do that do relate to the server (developer time is very precious, and we aren't overflowing with devs atm), that'll take a lot of time.

The fourm is an attatchment of the server, to relay information that happens in the server, during off-times when characters are not being played (this is mostly minor stuff, nothing world-shaking should be happening when a character isn't being played), or to document events that happen to support events. It works to help catch people up to current events on the server, using this information, as well as to display OOC information like rules and custom mechanics. It also allows for more nuts and bolts things, like staff discussions, and bug/suggestion discussions.

What it isn't for, is participating in events on the server, performing feats, and reaping the rewards of those feats without logging in and actually conducting your buisness and performing said feats.

You want to participate in server events, and create your own stories? Do so on the server, and use the fourm if you must as a suppliment (or don't. Some of us do stuff on the server without the forums, its just harder to see. You know, because it isn't documented on the fourms.).

If you want to play PnP, there are sites for that. There are discord channels to create groups. We are here to play an nwn2 PW, that is why the staff poured their time into nwn2 to create this server.

This suggestion already exists, as you mentioned in your OP. If you want to get some members of this community to play some roll20 with you, just ask them. There is really no need for time to be spend on a project like this even if we wanted it, it can already be done on other platforms (and with far less time spent). There are even some members of this community with their own little PnP groups made up of others who play with them using the platforms availible, I am friends with one such group (and I am sure they are not alone).

IMO, the only reason to suggest something like this, is because:
a) You don't want to spend the time making your own custom rules to emulate BG's on one of the availible mediums.
b) You want your PnP rewards to be put into nwn2.

Else-wise, roll20 has everything you need to do this. All you need is a group of people who want to do it with you. Start asking, because this isn't coming anytime soon.

It's doable but not worthwhile if you're aching for a non narrative play style. In game representation of a logged off player character having access to roleplay in game with others from a text standpoint is done, but past that the nuances of NWN2 is considerable enough that even the game client has trouble on it's own. A DM in theory could interact with you, reward for RP, etc while you're not in the game per se. You can count on one hand those who have some pseudo client created, I'm one of them.
