Hello guys ^_^

I have a swashbuckler/duelist character and I'm trying to find some alternative combact styles trying to overcome some limitations from Weakening and Wounding Critical against bosses.
In particular I'd like to know more about Parry!

Was any of you able to use it efficiently against really high level monsters with many attacks and extremely high AB? Would you suggest it as a tanking skill?

I've tried it a couple of times but it seems to me that it doesn't cover all the incoming attacks, leaving a lot of open spaces where the skill doesn't trigger, resulting in clear hits (disregarding 20s of course)

Can you give me some suggestions about how it works or any thoughts about your experience with it?

I would really appreciate any help :D
Thanks in advance!

Do you know if anything has been changed here on the server ? Has "Parry" been fixed in any way to be more effective? ;)

If you get Duelist 7, the Elaborate Parry grants one point of Deflection AC for evey 6 ranks. Thus with Parry skill point investment of 30, you get +5 eeflection AC that does not stack with other sources of deflection. But eventually you do get +1 over what you can get from items, which means that your cloak slot is freed for that regeration cloak, your helmet can go for that +4 intelligence item, bracers can be held for +4 dexterity, belt can offer you +3 strength and constitution, while ring slots can boost your saves.

The Parry skill can block one attack per flurry. Thus against someone with 6 attacks per round; You have a chance to block the first, the third, and the fifth.

33 (Parry Skill)
+ 10 (Dexterity Modifier)
+ 10 (Duelist's Elaborate Parry)
+ 6 (Gloves of Sword Skill from random loot, are there even other items that boost Parry)
= 59

If you have a build that comes with a high naked AC, and if you can get your parry skill as high as possible in addition to it, you become somewhat tanky with the Parry Mode. Basically, you can block three attacks per round, and attacks that remain have lower chance of getting through your AC.

The reason why parry mode is not used that often or at all is because the more attacks the opponent has, the more attacks will be tested against your AC rather than Parry Skill. Thus Improved Combat Expertise might have the better effect over all, not to mention that your own attacks will be limited with the Parry mode. In other words, you are not killing things as fast as you could without the Parry mode.

As for tanking bosses, well, the AI has a tendency to attack the highest source of damage... Which in the case of Parry mode might not be you. Especially if there is a party.

But yeah, Parry skill point investment is still great if you go for at least Duelist 7.

Thank you for the tips!
I might need to RCR to get something useful out of this class: as you said Improved Expertise might help but I will need more than 3 points...
I've tried parry with a pretty high skill bonus but I died before I could land my first risposte attack which clearly is not worthy the money for all the parry items!

By default your parry roll needs to be 10 points higher to get the extra attack, you can take the Improved Parry feat to lower it to 5.

You should also look in to Sembian Fencing, One Weapon and/or Athkatlan Triparite. You can use any of these modes alongside Deadly Defense when in Parry Mode and it works quite well together. I tested these some time ago with Parry mode and they work beautifully. Since you limit yourself to 2 or 3 attacks per round, Parry mode isn't really a penalty (or minimally so). I'm not sure if the mechanics were changed since I tested as it was quite a while ago, but see this thread for some notes on beneficial feats.

EDIT: whoops, thread is here

Sembian Fencing could be really good but the DEX bonus doesn't stack...
Athkatlan Triparite on the other hand is great for my character, thanks a lot for the suggestion, it fits perfectly !

I believe though that Parry as it is at the moment is not worthy (except for the AC Duelist's bonus) so I'm definitely swapping Improved Parry with Improved Combact Expertise. Too bad I can't return 400k of Parry items XD

Anyway thanks a lot guys ! ;)

Since Parry has come up again: does anyone know how it interacts with Expose Weakness? Does the latter work alongside it? And what about Expose Weakness AND One Weapon AND another Combat Feat (Sembian, Athkatlan, etc.) and Parry? Do all of them work simultaneously?
