Elias's journal/notebook

This young man's journal is not in amazing condition. It is dirty and water-stained and the cover is damaged. However, where the binding had begun to unravel, effort has been made to mend the stitching.
All in all, it is obvious that the notebook has been consistently exposed to a rough life, but the owner has tried his best to take care of it.

Undead attacked the city. Our home is gone now. Ma and Pa are dead.

Found a little hole above a warehouse to stay in. All I could save from home is one of Ma's books and her writing stuff.
Guess I can keep practicing my letters and writing. Ma would want me to keep practicing, I bet.
Finding food is hard, but those Ilmateri food kitchens help a lot.
I miss Ma and Pa, but I'm thirteen now. Not a baby anymore.

A lot of people don't keep a good eye on their stuff. That's all I'm going to say here.
Made a friend named Jenny, and the two of us help each other out sometimes. Together, we can get stuff that neither of us could get alone.

Been a year since the undead killed Ma and Pa. It still hurts a lot sometimes, but not as much.
Jenny and I don't just take stuff now. We also do some real jobs when we can. Running messages and packages around, that sort of stuff.
We have to avoid some of the bigger kids, and some of the grown ups are dangerous. But we know a lot of shortcuts and getaway routes, so we're okay.

Two years since Ma and Pa died.
Have a few people who think Jenny and I are reliable. They hire us now and then, kind of regularly. One of them is kind of a weird old man. But he pays the best out of everyone, so I don't mind too much.

Another year. I'm doing okay, especially with the weird old man's jobs. Just wish I didn't have to breathe through my nose whenever he opens his door; it stinks in there!
Started carrying around a big stick, to protect me and Jenny.

Been a while since I wrote in here. Things just been pretty busy, I guess. Guess that's a good thing, keeping my mind off of stuff.
Miss you, Ma. Miss you, Pa.

Jenny and I got into a bit of a fight. I mean, it's true that she should be more careful! I didn't mean she can't take care of herself, just that she should ask me for help if she can't handle something. Sheesh.

Haven't seen Jenny in over a tenday. Going to check in on her tomorrow if I don't see her today.

Went to Jenny's to look for her. She wasn't there, but one of the old man's packages was. Looks like Jenny had opened it - there was a zombie head in there.
Have we been delivering undead body parts for the old man this whole time? My gut tells me he's some kind of necromancer, or at least involved with one. Only explanation.
After Ma and Pa were killed by undead, it really burns me up that I've been working for a necromancer this whole time. I'm so angry.
Don't know where Jenny is now, but my only lead is the old man's place. Too many questions if I tell the city watch about this. Going to try to figure this out myself.

Went to the old man's place, got inside. Found Jenny, too late for her. Set her on fire, set the whole place on fire. Don't think the old man was in, didn't wait to find out.
Took a bag of coins, a silver knife, a big book. Ran.
I don't know what to do now. I can't stop crying.

The big book is full of weird markings and symbols. It's not like Common at all. But a lot of the markings seem familiar somehow. I'm going to try to figure them out. At least it'll take my mind off of Jenny.

Haven't gotten much sleep since I started working on the big book. It's fascinating. I figured out a bit of it. I think there's some sort of force all around us, and the markings and symbols in the big book are about that force.
Once I figured out one of the pages in the big book, it became a lot easier to figure out some of the other pages. It's still slow going though, and there's a lot more to go through. I think it might take me months or even years to figure out the whole book.
I think it might be a spellbook.

Yeap. It is a spellbook!
This morning, after I figured out more of the pages, I tried to do some of the stuff in the book. A ray of cold frost shot out of my finger. Very cool.
I CAN CAST MAGIC. It's like a whole new world is open to me now.
The book also tells you how to create a magical armor, and other stuff. I realized I need to study this book more and practice this magic thing. But I don't know if the old man is looking for me. So I cut off my hair so maybe I won't be recognizable. Then I left the city. I mean, why stay in the Docks anymore? I CAN CAST MAGIC.
Never been outside the city, but it's really nice. The farmlands are open and pretty. I also found a scroll that had more magical markings on it. I took a while to figure out the scroll - it tells you how to summon animals. VERY handy.
Found a graveyard, and there were a lot of undead in there. I thought maybe the old man was responsible, but I didn't see him around. I thought it would be good practice to use my magic against the undead, but they almost killed me. The only thing that was keeping me alive was the magical armor.
A knight named Sir Xiaven saved me, though. He's a real live knight, helping a kid from the Docks like me. I thought that kind of stuff only happened in Ma's stories. He even said I had strength and courage.
I used the magical armor spell on Sir Xiaven, and he said that it was good magic! So then we worked together to destroy some undead. I'm glad my magic was useful to Sir Xiaven. I even got in a few hits with a big branch I found.
I think I am getting pretty good at destroying undead.
