The True Beauty of the Web

I sit here. . .

My eyes watching upon the moon and the stars as they proceed in their midnight dance.

I sit here. . .

As the sounds of nature emit their ever peaceful chimes of crickets and rattles of flaked leaves with glades of grass.

I sit here. . .

As time moves by and the world proceeds to turn along its axis ever so.
And as it turns,
I watch the results,
A single bird,
Then a nest,
Then two birds,
Three,
And time goes on. . .

"Time. . ."

Something i never understood clearly,
But something i have grown to accept,
It takes this thing,
"Time. . ."
To achieve, to overcome, to perfect.

I use this thing,
"Time. . ."
To reflect,
To adapt,
To morph myself ever so closer to that of which i need to be, to achieve what was asked of me so long ago.

The world turns.
And i turn with it,
The lands change.
And i change with them,
The animals evolve.
And i evolve alongside them.

Here i sit, watching the moon fall and the sun rise another time more then i can remember. I sit along this tree branch in this new world before me. This new world, This new forest i now call home.

And even in my home i am challenged. I slowly shift my head downward and see my challenger. A large behemoth slowly slithering up the tree of which i claim my domain.
It challenges me and it slowly wraps around my body tightening it's grip upon me as it shows it fangs in attempts to assert its dominance. The grip tightens the fangs clamp and the blood sheds. I watch this predator from within its grip, and it watches me. But in the end even its grip was loosened as another moon fell and the rays of the sun took its place. For hours me and it sat, our eyes locked upon one another until finally its grip loosens completely. I tilt my head to the creature, but it pays me no mind as it seems the fear it let off was not enough this time. And without another gesture the predator moves on eager to spread its fear amongst the weaker willed vermin who litter this forest as I do.

I watch it for a while,
From within my web atop a grandfather tree,
Spending that one thing that is so precious to me,
To analyze this creature.

"Time. . ."

And here I sit. . .

I finally decided to come down from my tree today. To stretch my legs and walk amongst that of which i now pro-claimed my new home. It took some time, but alas i found some energy after my long journey from Saphromague. I walked amongst a forest of chaotic nature. Snakes, hydras, oozes and myconids all here fighting amongst one another in fearsome, bloody battles of the hunt. The battles waged on in all corners of this forest in a predator against prey gladiatorial conquest as i walked alongside my arachnid sub-servants in our examination. I found the carnage beautiful. . . Truly nature is untouched here as the animals roam freely to do as they please without the need of man hunting and domesticating the many. I walked and relished in my walk as I took witness to the forest for the first time now within it's veil of tall jungle trees and carnivorous plants and predators.

I collected a few herbs along my travel. It reminded me of the walks i used to partake in with my mother back in my village and was blissful, yet i still felt something was wrong here. And indeed, something was wrong here. I looked up and saw it, an undead abomination walking towards me. A single arm stretched out in my direction and a limp in its slow waddle towards my location. I knew something was off here. . . I knew this, yet i sat up in that damn tree all this time with these uneasy feelings, and thus ignored it.

Image

The dead walked near, and a single blink of my eye revealed two, then three, then four. The dead grew in number right before my eyes and continued to do so as they crawled and scratched their way towards me. To let such unnatural abominations plague my homeland to which I now protect as my own? This was unacceptable.

And now I found my first step towards what was asked of me so long ago. I draw my blade and say my prayer to she who will guide me in battle for years to come. . .

"Eilistraee guide my blade."

Now the sword of light is drawn.

And the hunt begins. . .

My hunt raged on for hours and my sword grew ever more blood thirsty the more i cut down every plague filled undead within my path. They came in waves aching and screaming, cursing me with their vile nose-wrenching breath and yet i gave them no pity and quick deaths - the many of them. Some of the other predators seem to have riled up due to the carnage taking no sides but their own. Predators of the forest began to soon take upon the undead and me in a battle between us all. I fought. . . and fought. . . and fought even more. The blood of both my enemies and my predators spilling and befouling the soils of the forest and painting the green glades red.

I feel as though the sun had risen, fallen and risen again since last i sheathed my blade. I looked up and the morning was upon me once again. The forest was calm, 'for now'. But even in this i knew the dead would soon walk again under the veil of the setting sun. My head ached and my muscle even more as I turned my head to witness the spoils of the past battles littering the forest from the highest tree top to the deepest of ponds. It was a sickening sight but one that would soon be fought again - I knew this.

"Perhaps i should return."

I turned my head away from what was done, but stumbled as a sight overtook me. . .

I looked upon it, something so beautiful so clear and yet a masterful work of art stretching between the trees and grass that govern its spectacular fashion.

Image

I took a hesitant step forward marveling in its beauty that i dare would not to taint with the red upon my fingers. I looked behind me as Zarfleez and Nexxramus began to approach from the shadows and take my side again. We looked upon the lair ogling it for some time before they would approach the great web and feel upon its silk for the first time. They took little time to enter and i followed along in their skitter.

Image

It was truly beautiful what my eye set upon. A large grove of pure spider silk cascading from high and low purely a sight to behold and yet i felt something was not quite right. I looked upon the grand web and saw that, there was nothing here. A web such as this you would think the spiders would govern in right of rule and the many would find their homes a place of bliss here. Yet the web was empty. . .

Me, Zarfleez and Nexxramus walked forward deeper within the grove of pure silk our curiousity peaked and our questions unanswered.

Until she revealed herself.

Image

Falling before us in a thundering slam a tainted fat queen reared her ugly face upon us. The queen spider stood before us with the smell of plague and filth ridden muck all about her. She wasted little time outstretching a string of her web and pulling in Zarfleez to be eaten to sedate her hunger. She was quick witted but I the wiser as i cut her attempt and soon cut the string, to then say not a word as I stood quite still, looking on as Zarfleez and Nexxramus made quick work of the vile queen. She died there motionless with legs stretched inward to hide her pain before death. A sad sight to see my kin are forced to such measures as to eat their own kin without the passage of birth before it, in the rite of uzarardian sacrifice. . .

I looked upon the grand nest once more and knew this was what I felt i should restore and govern back to its former glory.

I took some time to return from my nest upon the grandfather tree and bring down the eggs from home. I layed them about and looked to Zarfleez and Nexxramus to spin some silk around them to hide them from predators and mother nature and to keep them warm as they sit now tucked away under the webs of their mother and father.

I met a man today at a camp fire along the road. He calls himself the Thunderbird. He approached me and yet at first i was hesitant in his approach. Another man approching me to cat call as all the other do and did. But there was something about this man though that I saw different from common commoner and bandit along the way. He wasted little time to share his name moniker to my ear and I to his. We talked and walked for a time as he showed me around the lands of the sword coast explaining the 'what goes on' here. As we went on I could sense great wisdom in this man and his words. He is an brilliant and intelligent man even though a bit strange - I have yet to oppose his guidance.

As we spoke more our conversations grew deeper and darker. I learned of a hatred the thunderbird has for her. She we call the 'Damned Queen of Spiders'. . . "Lolth". He never quite explained why he despised the queen I sought to overthrow. But his eyes told it all, as we spoke about her. Our hatred for the 'Spider Queen' is the same, and we both have our adversed reason for this. We grew angry the more and more we talked and spitted upon her name. So we did the one thing we knew best when hatred clouds the minds of mortals.

I took light steps along the roads south away from the chaos of orcs and devils of the north. I passed by a few sights that the man the Thunderbird had shown me a few moon-downs ago. Eventually in my travels i saw signs of beregost in the distance but i opted to stop by the friendly arms inn along my way there to sell a few collectibles I deemed a bit heavy to carry. Eventually a conversation between two figures in the distance came forth to my ear. The figures spoke of plague and illness befouling a shrine nearby. An ill omen to the balance of nature and good health as the shrine to the 'Forest Queen' was said to have been corrupted by foul magics. I am never one for stories but seeing as Mielikki has shown my family and my kin good spirit and good health within veil of the Far Forest, i sought to perhaps give my aid if these rumors were true.

I eventually took stride, Karzaka behind me in my step towards the location whispered before me back at the inn. Soon enough I had come upon the shrine in question. The shrine seems to have visitor and spectators already. One of them I knew as the Ranger Kalidorian. I stepped forward and was eyed by a women within the group of shrine visitors to which she impatiently looked upon me and Karzaka as drows to be shown the ends of a pre-determined magic spell. She has halted by Kalidorian for her foolishness and soon fizzled her spell from her hand in this. Do you not see it Lolth. . . This is the mindset you give upon the many who look upon that of which you call 'your children'. Cursed to forever be deemed vermin of a pantheon of evil for crimes they did not commit. Something about the recent situation made my blood boil, but i knew better then to dare spill blood upon a scared ground to the gods.

I came forward and soon enough saw upon my eye the taint and corruption befouling the shrine. Truely this was an act upon trickery - or perhaps an outsiders making his presence known to cause destruction in what little it could. It did nay matter to me, only that I came here to give my aid to a common guardian and ally to my people.

"I am unsure who has brought this upon you Forest Queen. A blight to sicken the balance and corrupt the soils."

"I come upon you to aid you in health and renewal. I commend you for your efforts in keeping the balance of the wild and clearing the mind of those who would not understand the balance of nature."

I am Cerebella Dreambreaker, first of her name to the elder family of Ezu of the Far Forest my Queen.

"Another day fallen, and another night looms over the horizon. . ."

Comfort-ability within these forest is somewhat dawning on me now in what little of it there is to offer. The paths of the forest soon to be memorized within my mind, as well as the night terrors and preditorial neighbors. Even in this I still feel as though a place to rest my head without caution has yet to be found. I am not restless nor am I fatigued but I feel as though my recent travels around these outstretching lands has given me hardened - sore feet and fingers. Of course I do not let such minor things bother me but something about it has always brought a homesick thought in my mind.

I look up into horizon as the sun falls, slowly giving way to the darkness and reinvigorating sight of the moon. I smile at the luxury of being able to watch such a dance between night and day, dawn and dusk from atop this tree. It is in these times, even for but a moment I feel as though I can rest peacefully without the need for caution in these dangerous lands. But even I know what the night holds Moon Dancer. For the sun holds a natural law upon the world where little a thief would know better then to bring forth chaos and evil upon it's ever watchful gaze. If it were to ever fall. . . Then the veil of darkness would loom over and those born to chaos will walk freely in the night. The moon gives us what little light there left in these dark hours but it's shine does not thwart prejudice. The moon is not a protector it is a spectator. . . Watching what goes on in the world and is that one thing that knows exactly how chaotic the world can become if given these hours of emotional and spiritual freedom. It has seen things no man would ever dare see. . . And conjured things no man would ever have the power to control. . . The night gives us these times to bring balance into the world where law reigns over light and chaos reigns over the darkness.

Let the sun fall . . .

And the night begin. . .

A deafening screech echos within the Forest of Wyrms, scattering the birds that flock amongst the trees and calling the attentions of the masses of wild-life that roams freely from within. The nights air brisk as the winds shake the leaves into a ballad of Silvanus's song.

"We are different. . . You and I. . . Non could match you in your prime as you once towered upon those who you deemed insignificant. A god amongst the beast, the beast destined to assert it's dominance over the mere prey that would dawn upon it's step to be dominated and set the presence of fear into the hearts of the many. Here. . . Within these forest this is law and strength is the factor that determines your right of rule. For what you lack, you must make up for with haste or have your weakness exploited and your life pinned down against the very trees and ponds you once claimed your territory. How embarrassing it would be to have the prey that once coward at your very presence to look upon you. . .predator. . . now they prey. . ."

I speak looking above me at the sight of the large adult hydra emitting screeches and roars in it's attempt to escape it's webbed prison. I smile and take a closer step triggering the hydra to snap one of its many jaws at my direction only inches away from it claiming it's last meal.

"You poor thing. . . To have the one thing that made you strong taken away from you. . . Now a public display to the prey that once feared you, now mocking you as they walk within your field of view drinking from your ponds and feasting upon the prey that was once. . . also yours. . ."

I turn my head the other direction spotting a small deer a few yards away hesitantly walking up to a nearby small pond. It's head turning the direction of me and the offense-less hydra drooling at the mouth at the mere sight of the small creature. Soon dipping its head to enjoy the refreshing taste of mother natures tears. As it does so I can't help but to turn back to the webbed predator and emit a slight bit of laughter.

The hydra snaps it's jaw at me again in it's desperate attempt to silence me. I count the minutes. . . It counts the seconds. . . As the multitude of arachnid small and large begin to climb amongst the web scattering and skittering along the long body of the hydra.

"Perhaps this will be a lesson to your kin. . . That once the sun falls there is no fear that protects you. . . For under the veil darkness even the weak may strike a blow at the kings and their castles."

The hydra would begin to panic it's dominate roars soon converting into a high pitching screech, the spiders soon beginning their nights feast upon their newly capture prey.

The small deer would soon enough turn tail at the sounds of pain emitting from nearby, by way of venom and bile.

I count the minutes. . .

It counts the seconds. . .

"The dazzling lights of the stars and the moon dance blissfully tonight. It is as if the gods above who lay claim to these hours are in harmony, dancing amongst one another in a ballet so bright and beautiful. I envy them, for they are the ones who give us the joy of watching them dance so freely as they light up nights with their twinkle of hope for those have little of it.

Elistraee. . . Are you smiling right now? For your shine is so much brighter then all the others. Perhaps this is a good omen, that somewhere else in this world someone has done something great. And now you and all of those who laugh and sing alongside you in the night, celebrate joyfully above."

I can't help but to watch the clear nights sky tonight. As the many lights above dance in twinkles of star and moonlight. I stare in awe from a-top this grand-father tree alongside my kin as we relish our front row seats to the shining skeptical above. Something pokes at my side soon enough, as I take a gander I notice her eyes staring deeply into me. Eyes filled with curiosity and hunger as she pokes at me wanting something. . . asking something. . . Inevitably I give in smiling and laughing before I carcasses her. Slowly we descend by way of silken splendor onto the mossy web covered nest below. The star and moonlight would soon shine upon the many of us taking up the floor as the webs spin with grace filling the mossy under-cropping with an array of shining silks. I give them a curtsy and a smile as they begin to skitter along the webs in stray to take their places. I look up and soon say the very words she was waiting all night to hear.

"Shall we dance. . . Kazarka?"

Iv'e felt a strange presence all night. I lie here atop the grandfather unsure what this feeling was that disturbed me and my dreams on such a quiet night. Nights like this were rare, no howls, growls of screeches from the many predators below had awoken me yet. . . I still couldn't sleep. Inevitably I decided to propel down into the forest and survey the area. As I slowly descended down along the glistening moon webs this feeling grew stronger and stronger. I knew something was amidst within the forest, a disturbance of ill intent lurking somewhere deep into the fog and trees.

As I finally reach the bottom of the web den and am greeted by the many arachnids who seem to have taken notice of my decent. I smile and give them nods and pets of reassurance as I leave and signal them to stay here before pushing my way through the webs that shroud and protect the den of spiders. A deep breath of the air made it ever more apparent to me something was wrong. The air was heavy and filled so deeply with a smell I knew all to well since my travels here.

"The dead walk. . ."

I took little time to prepare my wards and witchcraft before uttering the words of aid drawing my allies to me.

"The dead beacon. . . hungry for flesh and to spread their plague across my home-land. I summon thee Toma, Tomo. Hear my call and ready arms against the terrors of the night."

I would soon be accompanied by the two sword sisters, giving them a slight motion to follow as they gain the sense of the situation.

Image

It would not take long before my nights challengers would show their faces. Their moans grew louder as their pungent stench grew stronger with ever step closer to me and my allies.

Image

The forest was filled with the creatures tonight more then any other night of their presence within these wooded glades. It was no matter however, as we brought to each and every wave sword and spell, exterminating the creatures of the night one by one in their assault towards our location. We fought hard pushing them back until finally we had reached a part of the forest unfamiliar to me. A large cryptic keep loomed in over me and my allies giving off a vibe of great peril and doom as the bats that governed its high archways flew into the nights sky at the sound of battle echoing their way. I looked down towards then entrance of the dead palace and soon took witness to the gate keepers as they took the field as reinforcements to their dead brothers in arms against us.

Image

With time our push had brought us to the inside of this cryptic keep of the dead. The undead soon retreating deeper within only for us to follow in pursuit egar to eradicate the remaining dead of this nights horde. We were soon halted as we turned the corner into the main room of the keep of the dead. A women stood there within the pack of the walk flesh and bone staring at me in my arrival with cold dead eyes as dead as the ones who stand alongside her. Her glare was as sharp as the spear she had slung over her shoulder, staring a hole into me as she stood towering over the many undead who surrounded her.

A battle of arms soon turned into a battle of will, as the two of us and our allies stared deeply at each other with grips tight on our weapons and muscles and bones as tense as a bow string. The silence was deafening as the winds whistled through the cracks of the keep playing the doom tune that kept the cold sweat running down my spine as I stood there frozen in place by this dark and powerful presence I felt in front of me.

I had to break the silence. . .

"Who ar-"

An ear shattering sound spell soon shrouded me in high pitched dread. I tried to hold my ground, holding cuffed hands over my ears and shaking my head trying to regain my senses before looking up and seeing a hand covered in residue of a spell spoken. I smirked now understanding that this was no time for word-play before charging in and attempting to strike a blow back against the terrors of the night and their dreaded priestess of this dead keep.

Image

The screeching sound of pain would be the last thing I heard that night as the battle sound soon ended through one final swing of my blade piercing the hefty defensive wards and wardrobe of the dread queen. I stood over the body
holding my blade at the neck of the women from above barely able to stand after such a hard fought fight.

"I ask again one last time, who ar-. . ."

Again I am interrupted as the women echos a painful laugh coughing up blood in the process for fading to ash at my very feet. I sigh before shielding my eyes at the even greater presence that soon loomed over the horizon marking the end of tonight's battle.

"Lathander shows himself, finally."
