Background:

• Orphaned at the age of five, Potema spent her formative years in an orphanage on the outskirts of Neverwinter dedicated to Ilmater. She was a precocious child, often with too much energy for the sisters to handle. When she wasn't driving her caretakers insane with her constant questions and regular bouts of extreme hyperactivity, Potema was usually found with her head firmly buried in a book. When she began to show a keen interest and talent for the Arcane at the age of ten, the priestesses took no time in bringing her to the Church of Mystra where they hoped she could find a teacher in the arcane arts to curb her "excitability" through rigorous study in her chosen interest.
  Sadly the next four years saw no change in Potema, her boundless energy costing her four separate teachers in as many years, each one more frustrated than the last. Her inability to keep still made her progress falter, with her teachers all decrying how she was a brilliant girl, but couldn't stay in one place long enough to learn anything. It was after her fourth teacher gave up that her luck finally started to turn for the better.
  A man named Desmond had heard from Potema's teacher all the things that supposedly made the girl a terrible student. Desmond knew that what might make a terrible wizard by most standards could make for a very well suited candidate for a ranger in the Order of the Shooting Star. He told Potema's teacher that he wanted to meet her, and if he saw potential in her, then Desmond would take her as his own apprentice. The meeting was quick, and before the day was out Potema was packed with just a few sets of clothes and the sturdiest boots she had.
  The next four years saw Potema training every day in both the arcane and survival. Movement was the medium through which knowledge flowed into her mind, and Desmond saw that she never stood still so long as she was awake. The days were grueling, with hardly a break to catch her breath before her next lesson began. Before her time with Desmond was out she knew just as much about Mystra and the Weave as she did about hunting and catching game.
  When she finished her training, Desmond initiated her into the Shooting Stars, and with hardly a bit of warning, sent her on her first assignment: investigate the infernal incursion near Baldur's Gate.

• Potema is an orphaned Vistani left behind after her camp was attacked while they traveled in Toril. She has little memory of her origins, but her connection to the Plane of Shadow and the Demiplane of Dread has left its mark on her. She often has nightmares about the Mists coming for her, though she doesn't understand what it means yet.

  Potema's werewolf doll, Dafne, is the only thing she has from her brief time in Ravenloft as a child.
