Gullykin Crypts and Turning queries

Unread post by electric mayhem »

I've just done a run through the whole Gullykin crypts with a Turn undead build. It was fun, challenging and interesting. Done it with other builds and various tactics before. This one, made me think a little. It was good.

Now onto some curious observations.
Both of the lower tier Liches summon a Vampire (greater undead summon?) in either 1 or 2 slot of their spell order.
My turner rebuked both of them (lich and vamp summons) to that stunned immobile unresponsive phase.
When moving into melee with the Lich and attacking, the Lich stood there taking a beating (Normal and expected).
But, the Vampire summons began moving in and proceeded to attack my character. If my character stopped attacking the Lich, the Vampire summon would stop too. All the while, the rebuked stunned status was applied on the summoned vamp.
I'm not sure this is meant to happen?

The bone spider guardian, I successfully rebuked. With a turn lvl of 34, and HD creatures roll of 76.

Then a minute or two later I began the Necrolord battle.
Immediately turned undead to the result of:
Highest Level of Creature Affected: 33 (somehow lost 1?? between the spider battle and Necro. Necro debuff?)
Maximum Hit Dice of Creatures Turned : 78
Name attempts to turn Necrolord: Failed (Too many Hit Dice to Turn)

Now this got me curious. Is the Necrolord lvl 34 and above? Thus Turn Undead has failed due to that as my Turning Level was 33 at the time.
Or does the check get influenced by the Hit Dice of Creatures Turned score, being 78. There was no other creatures present at the time, only the Necrolord... and he was higher than a Hit Dice of 78.... ?

I'm assuming its the former, and not the latter, as when I resorted to chucking sun spells at him, the HPs I had to work through resembled a LVL 30 character... and not a lvl 78... if such a thing was possible.

I'll keep it short & sweet:

Turning Check = Max HD of single creature your cleric can turn in an attempt. This roll is your cleric turning level modified by a turning check (1d20 + CHA [+Master of Energy]) which will vary between -4 and +10 depending on build, feats & CHA bonus.

Turning Damage = Max Total HD of creatures your cleric can turn in an attempt. This check is a 2d6 + CHA + Cleric level + Feats & Modifiers (eg. Empower Turning, Exceptional Turning).

So with a turning check of 33 and a damage roll of 78 you could turn two 33 HD creatures and one 12 HD creature (78 total).

Now, in terms of the lich boss itself, there is a toolset creature property called Turn Resistance. Liches have this naturally (usually +4) but it can be edited to any amount by a creaturw developer. A 20 HD lich with a +20 Turn Resistance would be the same as a 40 HD creature, thus beyond your maximum turn check.

A dev would have to chip in as to exactly what this might be set to for the Necrolord boss in particular.

.
Ah, this explains the possibility of what I saw then. Because I couldn't fathom why it would fail when the score and abilities were stacked so high for this one time purpose.

Looks like you got a poor roll on your turning check. You should keep spamming Turn Undead till you get a better roll :P
