Shield Fighter PRC

Unread post by wurdpass » Tue Jan 29, 2019 4:20 pm

Hello all!

I'm not sure how this stacks up with the 3.5 source books but it seems to me that the server could utilize some sort of Shield Fighting Specialist PRC.

Chad had a good thread on the subject here:

Covers both the potential and the downsides of building around the cool, custom shield fighting feats.

As it is today, the feat burden to utilize both the Shield Slam mechanics as well as getting >1 shield attack per round is prohibitive unless you devote a lot of Fighter or Divine Champion levels. Ten levels of fighter will give you 6 feats, which is insufficient to satisfy both Shield Slam and the shield attack per round fighting feats.

Without Fighter (and to some extent DC) a martial class like or Barbarian, Man at Arms will struggle even more to utilize the feats. Ranger fairs slightly better due to being able to backdoor the Greater Two Weapon Fighting requirement, and of course the Paladin kit focusing on Shield Bashes exists but is alignment-restricted.

I think there is good reason that the shield bash feats require a lot of feats - both the additional attacks per round and the strength based Shield Slam are highly powerful feats.

Nonetheless, I think that there should be other avenues to attain them with a ten level PRC investment - compared to taking 10 fighter levels and still not having enough feats.

What I would propose is a relatively simple PRC that allows for martial classes to access these feats without being locked into Fighter or DChamp. I'm certainly open to suggestions. I don't want to make a class that any melee combat build will benefit from, but nonetheless to further encourage the shield fighting playstyle.

Requirements
Race: Any

Alignment: Any

Base Attack Bonus: +7

Feats: Dodge, Improved Knockdown, Shield Bash
4 feats, requires 13 int and 13 dex. Can add more feats to make more preventative: Disarm, Tower Shield Proficiency, Monkey Grip, Improved Initiative, Powerful Charge)

Skills: None (optionally could use Parry, Concentration, Tumble or Taunt to increase requirements)

Hit Dice: D10
Proficiencies: Tower Shield (only)
Class skills: Same as Man at Arms, with or without Tumble
Saves: Fortitude
BAB: High

1: Shield of Choice
2: Shield Specialization Feat (AC+1)
3: Agile Shield Fighter
4: Shield Charge
5: Toughness
6: Shield Weapon Focus, Shield Weapon Specialization (grants 3 attack per round)
7:
8: Shield Slam (this feat allows you to force a Fortitude save or stun attack)
9: Shield Greater Weapon Focus, Shield Greater Weapon Specialization
10: Dire Charge (optionally, or Shield Greater Specialization)
(No problem with toning some of these down if too powerful)

I've backloaded the feats to further try to prevent "any old" fighting class from taking this PRC. However once you've invested the levels in the PRC, it should be more efficient to take the PRC levels than switch back to Fighter or DChamp levels.

The class will be as strong as the Shield Bash line of feats is, which I think people have mixed opinions on. Personally I think it would be "OK" strong - a welcome addition to Barbarin 20/ and Man at Arms builds but not stronger than other combinations.

If this is a "Shield Master" PRC, I don't think that it is as strong as the Weapon Master PRC or the majority of martial PRCs like Divine Champion, WOD/AK, Dwarf Defender, or Frenzied Berserker. For power I would want it to be below Duelist in terms of aggregate strength, although perhaps ahead of the more niche PRCs like Dervish, Bear Warrior or Dragon Warrior.

(Look at page 2)

Basically my character did 50ish per longsword attack pr 50ish shield attack. Had no problem doing any dungeon or area except Stormpeak due to all the heavy magic. Got to level 22 before I stopped out boredom.

You don't need a shield expertise class to utilize the effectiveness of the shield based feats. Also pommel strike has the same DC as Shield Bash when playing a fighter, which 35 to 36.
