Give Gold the Weight it Deserves!

I don't think we're placing enough weight onto the importance of gold.

I suggest putting an irremovable object in the player's inventory, similar to the DMFI or scry tool. This item would then dynamically change in weight according to the player's gold total, in effect representing the important toll that carrying such heavy coin would entail.

Think of the RP implications! Endless. In pnp usually after we've managed to get into a lair with a lot of gold at the end the group has to make some tough calls figuring out how to actually transport said gold; often leaving much of it behind.

No longer would we have people strolling around town with a dragon lair's worth of gold in their pockets.

Khaevil created a system for this on another server and I actually quite liked it. Gems had real value, and bank notes were a thing.

*waits for the inevitable comment that this game/Server is about FUN, and nothing that gets too in the way of FUN, should be implemented*

*while waiting...the player comments...*

I'm all for this...BUT ONLY if there is some reward to the risk (in this case, negative). Like, for example, if carrying Coin is an issue to be addressed, how about NPC money loaning/interest from banks, the ability TO STEAL OTHERS COIN HORDE, and other more "realistic" aspects that one has in PnP.

On the same Token . . eh? eh? . . .ehem. Different currencies like in pnp would just be added to address the weight, platinum for instance, then might as well go the other way with copper and silver so that apples don't cost 500 gold.

I'll see your "Fun" and raise you "Medium RP server".

You could also make different types of currency: Waterdeep, Zhentarim, Amnian, etc.

I get why people think this is "not fun" but for me it's more realism and therefore more fun.

They could always make it optional. That way, the option who want these limitations can self-impose them. The others who enjoy a game that isn't a cumbersome slob to play can use the current system.

Allow people to "buy" currencies that sell for the same amount that you buy them for, that have weight values assigned.

As they run from one dungeon to the next.

Ok you get the picture. It doesn't have a unilateral effect as some characters can carry 5 tons apparently without difficult. Though I wonder about those people with millions of gold where the barter UI breaks when you try to trade.

Edit: Oh, and we haven't accounted for bags of holding yet which are non-existant on the server due to technical problems. Any sane and wealthy would have one realistically.

What if the coins actually did not weigh anything?

I noticed there are no bags on this server. Why is that?

If you instill a weight to gold, you will have to have a way to store and bank the coin so that people can actually put their wealth away. Otherwise, just springing stuff of "SURPRISE! You're carrying an extra 300 pounds!" or whatever, is going to make a lot of people mad with no way of actually mitigating that. Making more tokens and in-inventory items to simulate currency isn't the answer.

1) You're already an inventory nightmare due to lack of ability to organize things with bags.

2) NPC merchants don't take these, so you'd have to set them a base sell/buy level that didn't vary so you could then sell the stuff to the merchant, then use that coin to buy stuff. Or after you have sold your wares, buy said coinage to keep from being weighed down.

3) if you put significant weight on the in-inventory stuff, you're going to immediately have the same issues as noted in the beginning of this post.

4) it will just make it that much more difficult for DMs to give out and take and count coins for plots and rewards.

Khaevil made a system on another server where this works really well. He made a coin purse where all of the gold and gems go. If you do not want to spend the currency, that goes outside of the coin purse. Currency is spent from the coin purse only (but if you do not have a coin purse it takes it from inventory depending on whichever currency shows up in the inventory first). Since there are no bags here, though, that's a moot point it seems.

Bags of holding used to exist on this server. They’ve possibly disappeared as older players have left. I used to own a few, from memory I think they reduced your encumbrance by a certain percentage (rather than allowing for more storage slots). So they can definitely be done. A few old stagers might want to chime in on this, surely there’d still be some around.

This would actually work rather easy, just add a vendor at baldur's gate that sells the coins and set the vendors return purchase value and sales list to only include the coins. Then if people want, they can go buy the coins and use them. Easy, simple, and fast. Though to be quiet honest you could also just rp using different kind of coins in trade.
