Niamh

Note: This is Niamh's "public profile" and somewhat differs from that available to the DM Team.
First Name: Niamh ( Actually "Nee-ah-v" though she often introduces herself as "Nee-ah-mah" while in Baldur's Gate).
Last Name: Isskerdottor.
Race: Half-Elven. Until recently she made efforts to conceal her ears and present herself as a full-bloodied human within the Gate.
Age: Late teens/Early Twenties
Height 5ft1
Weight: 97lbs
Eyes: Blue
Hair:
Blonde. Worn as a long braid over her left shoulder on first arriving on Baldur's Gate. Crudely shortened into an irregularly length pony-tail thereafter, and until recently often matted and dirty. In its present state (as of 30th Chess) the styling is now much improved, of uniform length, and kept scrupulously clean and well-groomed, often with a hint of mint and rose-water.
Facial Hair Style: N/A
General Health:
For the most part, Niamh appears well-rounded and relatively content with her lot, despite a very difficult first few weeks as a vagrant and beggar on arriving in the city. She arrived with little more than the ragged clothes on her back and has, in the eyes of many, restored herself to decent means through honest work and prudent saving of what little coin she does earn. Yet not all would consider Niamh wise: she has, after all, spent her well-earned coin in obtaining the trappings and habits of an adventurer.
She has demonstrated repeatedly that she is not greedy or dishonest: those whom she encountered in her first few weeks as a beggar in Baldur's Gate might recall how she declined offers of "excess generosity", often using the excuse that coin not earned was not truly coin worth having (although several times she broke this rule to accept offers of alms without providing a service in return). Niamh possesses a gentle humour and rarely laughs at other's expense unless prompted by the self-depreciating humour of the "other" in question. While she is not niave to certain practicalities of life (having grown to adulthood in a land oft beset by raiders and slavers) she is naïve concerning many aspects of life on the mainland, particularly with regards to geography, customs and religion. Having been raised in monotheism she is entirely ignorant of the Faerunian pantheon and the various strictures of it's deities; with the exception of the Gods Tempus and Malar, whose worship has been brought to the Isles by Rauthyrm invaders.
Niamh often laces her speach with mild oaths and curses that sound foreign to the ears of what she calls "mainlanders", but delivered in a tone of exasperation that makes their nature (if not their exact meaning) clear. Though kind, attentive, curious and gregariously friendly, she is thoroughly a product of what many would consider a "peasant" upbringing - unrefined, often inelegant in her manners and (all too-often) clearly lacking in education. She is not, however, oblivious to her faults, and in particular is keen to find trustworthy teachers to enable her to rectify the many, many gaps in her understanding of the world.
Those who know her well might be forgiven for expressing the concern that she may be easily led, and all too tractable. However, thus far, she has been fortunate in her friends.
Deity: The Great Goddess, also called the Earth-mother. Goddess of the Moonshae Isles and of the Ffolk. Has publicly expressed concerns that that the Goddess may be too distant to hear her prayers, and expressed some curiosity concerning the Goddess' Sharess and Sylune (amongst others).
Initial Alignment: Alternately displays both lawful and chaotic behaviour, not always in a discernible or readily identifiable pattern. Has not been observed to commit evil or selfish acts.
Profession: Shepherdess by birth and upbringing. Forced to become first strait waif, then beggar and errand runner by circumstances. Now she has equipped herself as an adventurer and is presently undergoing training at the hands of other, more seasoned souls while earning coin by tending the bar and plants at the Twilight Rose fest-hall.
Base Class & Proposed Development: Niamh has demonstrated the ability to survive outdoors for an extended period of time, both in a city environment and, on occasion, beyond the walls; with very little in the way of equipment or coin. She is primarily a Ranger/Rogue.
Habits/Hobbies: Frequents the Docks and East districts of Baldur's Gate, looking for work. Has previously practiced begging when out of sight of the Watch and Fists, but has not been seen to do since mid-way through Ches. Often loiters in the vicinity of adventuring types, soaking up as much "adventure lore" and as many good tales as she can. Of late, however, she has become more confident and has taken to actively participating in conversations with such groups.
Can now often be found tending the bar at the Twilight Rose fest-hall, or tending to the various plants on and below decks.
While once she variously took rooms at various taverns throughout the city, she now resides permanently in her private cabin aboard the Twilight Rose.
Languages: She has demonstrated the ability to speak Common and Elven, as well as Sylvan and her native language of Waylan. though her command of language is somewhat archaic and heavily accented.
Weapon of Choice: Niamh prefers to avoid metal armours, often going into danger clad in nothing more than practical clothing or good quality, practical leathers. She is rarely armed while aboard the twilight rose, but when abroad in the city often carries longsword, short-bow and dagger. In the wilds, she adds a stout shield to her assemblage.
Only a very few favoured individuals know from which of the many Isles she hails, not because she's unwilling to reveal that particular fact, but because the information means near-nothing to anyone not familiar with her homeland to begin with.
Originally reduced to begging upon first arriving in Baldur's Gate, Niamh soon found the means to establish herself as an errand runner and general dogsbody for hire. Despite coming new to an "industry" already teeming with locals -locals who it might be expected would not take kindly to a "knife-eared" interloper stealing their business- she has been able to claw her way back from abject poverty. How she avoided winding up face-down in a back alley or floating in the harbour is a mystery that few have given voice too. Niamh credits it to her public honesty, her reputation for refusing "over-generous payment" and the speed with which she was able to save enough to buy herself into a trade - if "adventuring" is truly something that could be considered an actual trade by the respectable folk of the Gate.
Even so, she does her best to keep her head down and out of trouble within the city. It's evident enough to all her see her that she's unaccustomed to bearing mail or weapons. Fortunately, this is liable to change soon enough with the assistance of the handful of veteran adventurers who have made at least some effort at taking her under their wing.
In recent days, Niamh has taken on work at the Twilight Rose Festhall and Cabaret, working in the taproom and tending to the various plants above and below decks. It is not yet commonly known that he now lives permanently aboard the former sailing vessel.
* Niamh loves to hear talk of news and adventure. She is liable to approach any gathering where such things are being discussed.
* As a taproom lass aboard a floating Festhall frequented by adventurers, Niamh hears a great deal about a good many things.
* Though no longer actively seeking courier work, Niamh still retains her reputation for reliability, speed, and good value for coin. If you need a package delivered within the city state, or to a location that can be reached from the Harbour by boat, she is liable to be recommended to you.
* Niamh belongs to the Moonshae Isles, and therefore belongs to a very, very small community within the Gate. Ruathym or Northman, if you have the accent or the look of an Islander, she'll want to talk to you.
* Niamh can often be found attempting to practice the skills she has learned from true adventurers, with varying degrees of success and aptitude. A stranger might take pity on any mistakes or display of poor technique and offer advice.

Background:
Niamh often deflects questions about her reason for leaving home and coming to "the mainland", giving vague mention of "too many mouths at home" and "family troubles" in response to such enquiry. Yet she is open enough about being one of the Ffolk, and of being raised by her half-elven parents as part of a large brood of half-elven children. Indeed, she seems to enjoy sharing news and tales of her homeland, while ever shying away from revealing more personal details. Aside from admitting to the size of her family and the nature of her parents, she might on occasion observe that she came from a family of shepherds.Only a very few favoured individuals know from which of the many Isles she hails, not because she's unwilling to reveal that particular fact, but because the information means near-nothing to anyone not familiar with her homeland to begin with.
