Harper Scout question

Unread post by Rudolph »

Trying to cook up unusual builds again, I am wondering about the following passage from the Harper Scout description in the wiki:
Spellcasting
When a character gains a new level of Harper Scout, she gains new spells per day as if she had also gained a level in whatever divine spellcasting class she belonged to before she added the prestige class. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained (metamagic or item creation feats, for example). If a character had more than one divine spellcasting class before she became a Harper scout, she must decide to which class she adds each level of Harper scout for purposes of determining spells per day when she adds the new level.
According to this, it should be possible to qualify for Harper Scout with, say, Ranger, but progress the Spellcasting of another class. Is this correct?

You can pick a progression only on the base classes you meet the requirements for.

Requirements for base classes? Do you mean Harper Scout can only progress Ranger or Paladin spellcasting (and the same goes for the other new Harper PrCs?)

That would seem to make sense, yes... :P

In general, spellcasting progression from PrCs can only be directed at any class with whose spells you might have become eligible to take that PrC. (For instance, if you need 3rd-level arcane spells to take a PrC, then that PrC will only be able to progress any arcane spellcasting class which currently gives you access to 3rd-level arcane spells. If I'm not mistaken, you are also unable to change your mind about which class you're progressing, so you can't, say, use Harper Agent to improve Cleric spells by 2 levels and Wizard spells by 3 levels.)

Harper Scout requires Ranger/Paladin spells, so it can only progress Ranger/Paladin; Dragon Disciple requires spontaneous arcane spells, so it can only progress spontaneous arcane spellcasters (Bard and Sorcerer); Harper Priest requires divine non-Ranger/Paladin spells, so it can only progress divine non-Ranger/Paladin spellcasters; etc.
