Rite of Fear - opt in/out
Hello team,
I'm looking for volunteers.
You might have noticed a few RP posts lately on behalf of my character Bueroza detailing the Rites of Tyranny taken from the Knights of the Ebony Scepter (check the in game book store under RELIGION for a complete copy of their virtues, rites and laws). The KotES seem to have been a guild of Banite Blackguards that died out some years ago. Before my time! bobthehero2 and I are in the effort of resurrecting them.
With the Rite of Tyranny done, Bueroza moves on to the...
"Rite of Fear
A Dread Knight must be fear incarnate, for fear in he is fear of Bane. A petitioner of lesser Gods must willingly mutilate himself, out of fear in the Dread Novitiate's acts, or force of his personality."
Appreciating the sensitivity of some players to be uninterested in this darker nature of RP that may leave your character changed by a mutilation (performed as tastefully as possible in compliance with our PG13 standard), I'm making it easy on myself and the lads that may follow. I've created this thread for people who ARE interested to put their hand up and volunteer as open to being approached. Or, if you feel particularly strongly and dont want to be considered, you can opt out and cross your name off.
Thanks,
D.

Re: Rite of Fear - opt in/out
Basically, to become a Knight of Bane our characters will need to intimidate another character into mutilating themselves. I just wondered if there were players not particularly squeamish or precious about their characters that are interested to volunteer as candidates we can consider for RP in this direction. Their character might even get a new enemy out of it! Due diligence to avoid any complications OOC, that's all.

You can feel free to consider any of my characters fair game for this sort of RP should they be in a position to be forced into such a decision. Fox/Walker/Kellan

Re: Rite of Fear - opt in/out
Interesting...
Unfortunately, I don't think I have any characters that'd work out here... the braver ones are too stubborn to submit to intimidation, for varying reasons (Siril would fight them off or die trying; Ollie is liable to annoy them into killing him outright before he managed to figure out there really was no way out of it; and Mainda would fight until the last, simply because of how bad her mutilation would be for business), and the timid ones are more likely to simply shut down or do something stupid (whether she wanted to or not, Shali would probably set fire to everything in a 10-meter radius, which... while definitely indicative of how terrified she is, isn't what the Rite of Fear requires
).
So yeah, it could make for some interesting RP no matter who it was targeted at, but I don't think the outcome would be the one you need.
Edit: I suppose if I tried bringing Belor back from whatever limbo I dropped him into... but the reason I stopped playing him in the first place was that I had no idea how to do anything with him. (Mainda is in a similar boat here, except her particular brand of anti-social behavior requires her to chat and lie a lot, whereas Belor... what, I sneak up to someone and use Sleight of Hand before disappearing into the night again? As far as I can tell, there's not really a lot of room for a self-styled 'master thief' around here - at least Mainda has something she can do before anyone starts hurting her, coercing her into heroics, or redeeming her...)

Re: Rite of Fear - opt in/out
The part that I'm having trouble wrapping my head around, really, is the "intimidate into self-mutilation" bit. I can definitely imagine Bueroza intimidating and/or overpowering anyone mentioned in this thread so far (especially my characters
), but as I see it, being coerced into self-mutilation usually requires a certain mindset that doesn't quite lend itself to the adventuring lifestyle. Of the characters I've got, only Mainda and Belor could have the desired reaction to intimidation, and only if it didn't cause a gigantic disadvantage after the fact. (This latter stipulation is why Mainda won't go along with it - the way she sees it, if she can't charm her marks into doing what she wants, then how is she going to go on? Might as well die right there and then, as far as she's concerned.)
Edit: Redbook raised an interesting point in Discord: "Mutilation" is a pretty vague term, and while I've assumed things that would be unacceptable to even my more malleable characters, he had some less severe acts in mind, like cutting one's hand or something. That would probably be accepted (with varying degrees of annoyance and complaining) by Ollie and Mainda, with the caveat that they'd just cast a healing spell on it when the Banites were gone.

Alternatively, I was thinking Bueroza and Bob going out to Boarsky (Boar... that big bridge) and RP capturing some bandits, we could then have people RP some captured bandits. Just a though I had.
Aurelien Amon: Human fighter, member of the Whitewood Vanguard, Hoarite
Lotrik: Not a wise Genasi, probably stronger than you tho, a master of longswords. Fully retired
Bob Thairo: Dreadknight of Bane, Back on the Coast, tyranning away with his wife

Whether agreed on by people or not this inquiry goes against the server rules. If this were a mature rated server that would be a different story but it is not. I understand how it can seem inhibiting as I started here as a Drow and found out well some things can't be done because of the server rules. (Slaves and going into too much gore like detail.) But that doesn't mean it will take away from the RP being unable to RP such instances.
Let's not ask people to break the rules of the server.

I think, if you'd read the OP more carefully, you'd have noticed that he was quite aware of the rules, and already intended to keep it PG-13...ValerieJean wrote: ↑Thu Apr 18, 2019 11:46 am

Good thing to point out, mind you. Just not necessary in this case.

Seconded, to me the distinction being OPs commitment to doing this "tastefully" as opposed to the rulings specifications around "gratuitousness".

Except mutilation cannot be done in a PG13 manner or ''tastefully''. It just cannot be done, this rule is not to hamper but to prevent the children that play on this server from such RP because they are minors. The rating of the Server and the Rules are to protect them and those who do not wish to delve into that RP. If you wish to pursue it well there are options available that are not on this server.

Re: Rite of Fear - opt in/out
The DM and admin are very adamant about the rules being the rules, full stop. If you look through the pvp consent forum, you will see many responses from DMs saying that regardless of player consent, the rules MUST be observed.
So, in essence, whether it's consented on or "tastefully" done, the topic is still a violation of the rules. That being said, there are other avenues such as PMs etc to proceed with the story as is, with consenting players- and honestly shouldn't be discouraged, as it IS following lore for those big bad Banites. It just simply can't be done on the server is all.

Not really, I mean adventurers kill, mutilate and maim monsters all the time, as long as its not very descriptive, I dont think it breaks the rules, at least in my experience, this can be done with intelligence and avoiding being graphic, otherwise it limits evil RP to a point that it becomes a joke/saturday morning cartoon villain.ValerieJean wrote: ↑Thu Apr 18, 2019 1:02 pm Except mutilation cannot be done in a PG13 manner or ''tastefully''.
