More Skill Points

Unread post by CrystalDragon »

Alright, this may not be a popular suggestion, but I felt I needed to make it because I'm a total skill (germbag) and never seem to have enough points. Especially with so many PrCs with different skill requirements and some classes being so skill starved (I'm looking at you Fighter and Cleric) where you can either devote yourself to only a couple of skills, or you can stretch yourself all over the place to get those tasty PrCs.

So my suggestion, given the derth of custom skills, is a +2 skill point increase across the board.

I know, I know, PnP has the same skills and more with the same skill point amounts as we currently have. But I feel that this is one area where we could improve on the base game. Just my two cents.

If I am looking to max out skill points, and still have a playable character, I will start off with a rouge. Maybe take able learner. Then I take cleric, I find there pretty good on there own and very useful in groups. I like Waukeen mainly for the merchant RP but if you take the trickery domain you will get invisibility at level 2 I think and if you are just starting on the server I would suggest the trade domain for the 10% off when selling all that junk you will find and you get 10% off all the items you buy from a merchant. You can increases that by add to your appraise skill as well. I'm not sure what the max appraise you need to get the best price every time, some funky roll with the merchants. I try to hit 50 and with the right items, it not that hard to do. Then I squeeze in 10 levels of Hierophant to make up for the caster level you lose by taking 4 rouge levels. I take the forth level of rouge at level 30 just to top off any skill that I need to top off.

That sounds like a great build, but it's also very specific. You've done well with the tools granted, but I'd like to see those tools expand, thus allowing more freedom to build.

its been mentioned a few times but never really had movement

but the difference with pnp is that all the DCs you deal with on a normal basis can be hit with just the d20 and skills make it easier, which is definitely not the case here

You always have the freedom to build whatever you enjoy playing, just be sure and follow the server rules. I can only speak to what I know. I have played many different characters and the build I described is a build that I feel would be a good starting point for someone that is new to the server. It is just one persons opinion, do with it as you wish.

I love this idea, particularly for all the great Lore skills introduced.

Perhaps instead of a flat Skill Point increase—which I myself would greatly enjoy!—it could be that at Levels 10, 20, 30 all PCs can choose 1 Skill Focus Feat in one of the Lore feat groups, to reflect the “gaining of experience and knowledge in various social fields unrelated to Class.”

A general skill point increase would be nice, as with all these added skills - that were forced on us 'dumb' characters to qualify for PRCs.
Most of them still don't have any mechanical use and not everyone gets into DM events. (No idea, if these skills are used in events regularly.)

Why not make all lore skills useful for identifying items ?
A char. could put points into a thematically fitting lore skill and still get something for his points.

Would work well considering how several skills (Spellcraft for +1 Save per 5 ranks, Tumble for +1 AC per 10 ranks) dip into the territory of feats/class abilities. When considering the amount of ranks offered as base and the plethora of options available for RP, one is often left wanting. Alternate takes on the 3.5 skill system have combined several skills into one (Pathfinder: Hide/MS merges to Stealth, Spot/Search/Listen to Perception).

I like Steve's idea, although one thing to take into account is prestige classes that require skill focus feats. In general, I am for more skill points for RP skills like Lore, escape artist, sense motive, etc.

There are lore nodes all over the server that reward xp and information should you have the required lore skill. I would make none of them identify and force players to find an identify or analyze spell, but maybe i am mean.

A flat increase in skill points would favor classes with low skill modifier. There are only so many good skills to invest into which makes this is a natural way to hold these classes back. Fighters, clerics and sorcerers fall into this category. I feel neither needs this improvement.

As for custom ways to increase the amount of skill points through extra feats etc, I feel like they are changes that add matter without substance. If you want to be a knowledgable fighter then invest some points into intelligence and go from there. You already have the tools for this, it just a question if you are willing to sacrifice a minor mechanical advantage for role-play.
