There have been rumours for some time now that Larian Studios (known for the Divinity Original Sin games) have been working on a Baldur's Gate sequel. But now those rumours seem more grounded. If you go on their website they currently have their home page under a teaser marked as "III". This could technically be Divinity Original Sin III. But as was done in the article, more investigation of the video background reveals references specifically to Baldur's Gate. Other game developers such as Brian Fargo of InExile (who used to run Interplay which published many of the original BG and IWD games) have been making subtle hints for some time that a BG3 game is under development, and since the appearance of this teaser has stated "Here it comes..." on his Twitter page.

Personally I think this is really quite credible. And I really massively hope that this is the case. Of any game studio other than Obsidian (who made NWN2, and under Black Isles, made the Icewind Dale games), I don't think we could get a better choice of game developers than them to work on a Baldur's Gate sequel. Divinity 2 is already a fantastic game with a lot of tabletop RPG elements.

It's interesting to say the least, but what would you want out of a Baldur's Gate III? It's often been theorized and there have been several games that have claimed "Spiritual Successor", but the actual story that takes us from BG, TotSC, (SoDS), SoA to ToB ended with either the Ascension or retirement of the Bhaalspawn so any BGIII would be in title only.

On top of this, at least in the past D&D has been relatively adamant that games made using their license must use the latest rule set so BGIII would be 5e and set 100's of years after the Bhaalspawn saga. So again, what can a developer do in making a 'BGIII' that ties it in to the original while jumping forward in time from 2e, post Time of Troubles to 5e, post Spellplague? I suppose their could be some kind of ancestor of Bhaalspawn storyline, but that could jar players since they might have romanced Jahiera, Aerie, Viconia, or Anoman....or none at all! Thus a progeny makes assumptions about the Bhaalspawns race and/or perhaps who he or she procreated with. Now, of course this could all be hand waved away for some races, but for a Dwarf, Elf or even Half-elf the Bhaalspawn would still be alive unless they died of unnatural causes (and if he/she didn't Ascend to godhood).

These are thoughts I have had since ~2003 when discussions ever came up about a BGIII, but they have only become more complex with the passing of time and the continued path of D&D jumping forward many years between editions vs. 1e/2e/3e where relatively short time passed between each edition.

Pretty sure they'll go with the book Canon and with whatever has happened there.

Like what Ravial said, they will most assuredly follow the BG novels and lore around it, so the protagonist of the BG1-2 games will be considered the Abdel Adrian (human male warrior) of the novels that followed the games. But I'm not so convinced they necessarily need to make the new PC of this potential BG game part of that Bhaalspawn progeny. What I think is more likely is that the game will be set in Baldur's Gate (just as the current DnD module) and you will fight the latest incarnation of the Bhaalspawn progeny, or the main plot will be more tied around the upcoming D&D module Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus ( https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki ... to_Avernus ). I imagine there will be a bunch of references to the old game, with some surviving characters (elves and dwarves can live through centuries after all)

Baldur's Gate, which in my opinion was not a very interesting city lore-wise in the 2nd edition era, was rather thoroughly designed and expanded in the Murder of Baldur's Gate D&D 5e module. It is a much bigger city in this era, and with many more new interesting locales.

As to the ruleset, it will absolutely be using the 5e edition. And personally I much prefer that. 2nd edition's ruleset is terribly dull to anyone but a spellcaster.

I'd imagine the plot would be akin to something like Murder at Baldur's Gate module revolving around, Bhaal's newest chosen but obviously in a very much expanded scale in terms of locales and side content. If it is made by Larian, that would make me quite happy, to be honest. In my opinion, the studio is very passionate about their games and they take their D&D/RPG roots very close to their game design.
