Random boss spawns

Are the random yellow/purple spawns suppossed to be so ungodly powerful compared to their standard version?
I was just happily fighting through the Beregost goblin caves, fighting standard gobbos who can only hit me on a natural 20, and suddenly a yellow goblin spawned and blocked my retreat. It then critted me to death in less than 3 rounds, knocking off over 100HP in three hits. That's not a power curve, that's a cliff.

They are only a bit more powerful.
.....fighting standard gobbos who can only hit me on a natural 20.
That's usually the problem, players are not expecting any trouble anymore, because they have done an area over and over. ;)
Happened to me also just before.

I'm a big fan - increased risk can bring increased rewards, too.

As an adventurer one should keep an 'edge' to them, always expecting trouble even in relatively familiar environs. Those who travel alone should be doubly careful and always have 2 or 3 emergency (Oh @#$#) exit plans. Potions/Scrolls/Wands of invisibility are a common option, especially for those who lack HiPS. Sanctuary is another great and quick way to get out of trouble. Then you have boots/spells of Ethereal Jaunt, Ghost Step, Ki Step, Shadow Step, Dimension Door Wands, Least Mantle, etc. obviously at lower level with less access to gold a stack of relatively cheap invisibility potions is probably the most cost efficient method to give yourself a reasonable chance of surviving when the odds become stacked against you. When you have covered your bases with regards to ability to escape you can consider ways to give you the extra edge you need when things get dicey to turn the odds back to your favor. Things such as Greater Heroism potions, Shield, IMA, Stat increasing wands/scrolls, Bless, Aid, Prayer, Haste, Mirror Images, Displacement, etc.

Think like an adventurer that has a dangerous life and it can be reasonably assumed does NOT want to die. Would YOU go in to that mine to 'happily kill gobbos' or would you go in prepared for anything? What happens if a new threat has entered the mine, killed all the goblins and you're walking in to a death trap? Happily this method of thinking will prepare you quite well for those rare occasions when a DM notices your group and drops a greater challenge for you to handle. :)

The drops are usually far greater than chests in my experience. There is a great gamble for reward. The map usually warns you when they’re coming with a message.

Yep been ko'd by purps and golds a few times. Good reason to party up. They are no match against a group....usually.

I really enjoy this addition though. You usually get a warning message when they spawn....then if your lucky you have this period of time where things become a little too quiet. Then the battle is on with no guarantee of victory which pretty much should be the point of playing.

Abd heck we are basically imortal so big whup if they win. An adventurers life is not an easy one. If it was then everyone would be doing it.

The purple are boss spawns as well? I've gotten merrily into fights with all purple critters I've ever seen, never considering the danger. 8 wisdom works both in and off game apparently. I have noticed that the gold ones scale quite differently. That's kinda cool actually

There is a kind of deep purple named enemies, those te boss ones. The paler ones and white named enemies are regular mobs.

Keep in mind also, your own actions may not be the trigger.

My very first encounter with the purples had my group (one of those rare times I grouped up) heading to the Minotaurs for a fun pub-stomp. However, someone was hunting Tasloi quite thoroughly before we had even arrived; and they were quite finished with that adventurer's...shenanigans.

We has no chance. Lightly warded; expecting just a quick jog through the Cloakwood; we got sideswiped by a pack of Purple Tasloi Witch Doctors. The whole pack was Witch Doctors. Summon Monster V!!! Before we knew it we were drowning in fangs, fur, and silence! Oh man the silence!!!!

Will never forget that day. <3

It wasn't one of the random purple spawns that give you a warning message, it was one of the yellow ones that get populated without any warning. It spawned right next to me, trapped me, and then destroyed me in seconds without a chance to defend myself. And this occured literally 20 seconds after the party I was with split up and left the area, leaving me by myself.
I'm willing to accept that I simply got unlucky, but that was a HUGE power jump. Going from enemies that can only do 10-15 damage per hit on a natural 20, to something doing 30-60 on 15+ was ludicrous.
