Background: Altael was born in a small commuity named High Hold, just west of Silverymoon. As his mother died giving birth to his early childhood was largely spent together with his twelve year older brother, Beled, in the care of an elderly neighbour of his father who had to frequently leave the village to serve his duty as a scout for the local militia. Tragedy struck the Nohli family during Altael's third year, however, when his father was fatally wounded during a mission. As the elderly neighbour could not care for a child as young as Altael he was therefore sent to an orphanage in Silverymoon. His brother was offered to stay however as he had the strength to help out with farming and other chores and thus the two brothers were separated.
Five years later Altael finally had hope of leaving the orphanage behind as he learned that his brother had joined the Knights in Silver. His brother, however, wanted nothing to do with a sibling he no longer felt any connection to. This abandonment shaped a cynical and distrustful nature in Altael. He did form bonds of reliance with his fellow orphans and it was with these youngsters he spent his adolescence and youth in Silverymoon. Within this ragtag group Altael became a lock-picker and lookout as they conducted their thievish business. He could, however, not stand the living in the places where he felt he had been abandonded twice, and at the age of 28 he decided to relocate to Baldur's Gate.
