Problems loading areas

Unread post by Hammer_Song » Fri Nov 01, 2019 5:33 pm

Hi BG community,
Im having some issues with my computer (again). I can log into the nexus but when changing to another area my computer generally freezes while loading the new area. Has anyone experienced the same or have any advice as to a possible fix?
Help would be much appreciated :D

How much free GB of hard drive space do you have?

300 out of 690 ... although my hard drive should be 1.5 TB. Is that normal? I'm assuming parts of the hard drive get taken up by things out of my control?

Well you have enough disk space.

Are you running the game full screen or in windowed mode?

Try fiddling with the settings, and try without full screen. I know my own installation of NWN2 runs better windowed, but just looks worse on my monitor (now, if I had a giganto monitor, it would be fine, but....).

GFX driver could not be up to date, I had the somewhat same issue a lot of years ago so it might not be a thing anymore.

Open your task manager and keep an eye on what runs madly when you go through a transition, if some of it suddenly sparks to 100% it could be the issue.

I was thinking of this, but how do I re-download just the server and not the entire game? I really don’t want to have to go through all those patches again if possible.

Thanks for the other ideas ... I’m (obviously) hopeless with computers so any help is really welcome!

If it's just the server related stuff.
Couple places to start.
Neverwinter Nights installation location:
go to the hak folder and start deleting files like : bg_appchanger.hak, bg_banners.hak etc etc. all the ones for our server start with a "bg_" in their file names.

once they are gone, you should be able to start the game again (I suggest rebooting computer before so, just to give the comp a refresh) and let the autodownloader redownload all the server specific files... that will take some time being on aussie nbn.

but yeh, if its a graphics related bug, it could be you need a driver update for the graphics card or even the motherboard drivers itself. windows updates can sometimes play around with driver settings on these devices which at one point were fine, then windows does something sneaky, then they begin not operating correctly until you get new drivers for the hardware.

You are awesome EM! Now let’s pretend I understood everything you just wrote and I need my drivers updated - how would one do that?

Do you use the client extension ?

It solves a lot of bug and help greatly with freezes or crashes at area transition.

Prolonged process but all relatively the same for each differing piece of hardware.
First you need to know precisely what hardware you have in use, to ensure you get the correct driver for it.

Let's start with the Video card, I'm guessing you may not know if you've got an onboard or a slot device (separate card plugged into motherboard).
If you are running Nvidia graphics card, depending upon whom set your pc up, you may have some Nvidia software already running in the background.
Go to the bottom right of your screen, click on the little white up arrow which should bring up the windows notifications icons that are currently in use. It'll look similar to this:
Image
The Nividia logo shown int he above picture is in position 15. Yours should look similar to that icon IF it is installed and running.
If not, not to worry.

If you know precisely which video card you have in the PC, head on over to the manufacturers webpage .
For nvidia: https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx
for AMD: https://www.amd.com/en/support
And use the system of selectable options on either of those pages to get to a specific search for your video card.

If you don't know what specific video card you are running. Quick an easy way to find out.
Click your Windows Start Menu button and begin typing "dxdiag". You're looking for a search result program called "dxdiag.exe". Run that.
This basically shows you all the information you may ever need to supply to anyone supporting you and your PC for hardware related issues.
Many tabs of information are available, take a gander.
But the one we want is the Display 1 tab.
Under this tab, in the Device section box of the window, you'll see lines talking about Name: , Manufacturer: , Chip type: etc.
There's your answer to what card you have installed and running.

Using this information, head back on over to the webpage with the driver download search fields and put that information into the selectable boxes.
Before long, a webpage should appear with a download link to the latest "Drivers" for your video card.
Download it, and install the file.
If using nvidia, it may ask you to download a driver management program (the one I mentioned earlier on in this explanation in the first paragraph). It's not 'essential' to have, but can be handy for hassle free up-to-date driver management.

Hope that helps get ya started.

So I updated my driver ... no improvement. I’ll try using the client extension.

Thanks for the ongoing help!

One thing - Microsoft teams has recently popped up on my computer. Could that be effecting anything? I may be imagining things, but it’s appearance seems to have coincided with the lack of performance. I’ve tried deleting it but it keeps coming back.

Teams is basically Skype/Discord baby. Shouldn't be affecting NWN2.

BUt you aren't running the client extension....? I thought everyone runs it... its basically essential.
