Study Spell feat

For you mages out there, I could use some help with getting my wizard to successfully scribe new spells.
It's been awhile since I played a wizard, so it might just be me being rusty. But I remember it used to be quite easy to use the Scribe Scroll feat. You would just click the feat from a hotbar button, then click the spell you want to learn.
But with regard to learning new spells, BG seems to have replaced the Scribe Scroll with the Study Spell feat. I got it to work once by clicking the Study Spell hotbar button, then clicking the spell. But now it's not working at all.
When I click the Study Spell feat from a hotbar button, I can see it turn a goldish color, as though it is activated. I then click on a scroll that I also have placed in a hotbar button. But then, when I go to click on ground (with Summon Creature, for example), the cursor remains grayed out. It won't activate the spell. I've also tried clicking on my character, as that is sometimes how to activate a spell, but that doesn't work either.
Can anyone help shed some light on what I'm doing wrong?
