OOC Greed

It's always more than a little heartwarming to see people reselling stuff that you posted on the consignment shop for more than double the original price right after they buy it from you. You try and be nice and sell good items at affordable prices for lowbies or just people who don't do loot runs to afford, but some people's greed really has no limit.
It's inspiring to see this behaviour taking place even on a crappy old video game. By all means, keep it up!

Hopefully they have levels in Cleric of Waukegan.
More seriously, I have seen people RP merchants, which would do that. One even offered to be the intermediary between my character and the racist jerk face shopkeeper who was overcharging me just because I'm not from around here!
I hope, but doubt, people who do that do it in-character.

More germane to the OP: sometimes OOC greed gets in the way.
My druid takes the time to loot all the kobolds' shinies on his way to culling the outsiders below them. IC, he just wants to get past them (and can claim that he needs to cull them to get them to respect his strength, and make his path safe). Same with the beetles on his way to the aberrant Gibberlings below them.
Meta gaming isn't always pure greed, too.
It can be hard to stick to IC motivations when opportunities to "get further" faster. Now that my druid is level 11, how do I justify not patrolling the graveyard? I stopped doing so when another player told me off for doing so. And how do I justify to "moving on" to chasing humanoids and bandits that are more level-appropriate when my character has no cause to chase them (and may actually support them)?
Similarly, IC motivations to help others facing things your non-good character might support can be worth suppressing. My Talos-worshipping druid (CN) helped a patrol destroy some outsiders and abberants. But then the group was asked to stop a Malarite bandit cult. IC, my character would betray the party, and warn (or help) the bandits. OOC, I wanted to help the party. In that case, my druid made himself scarce, but for OOC reasons I didn't help out the cult. I think most would approve of that meta-gaming.
It's a lot easier to play IC and still advance than any other game, but there are some strong incentives - greed and otherwise - to metagame some. Posting to hear feedback/thoughts.

Its a market not a charity. That is plainly evidenced by some of the nonsensical prices players set.
If you are trying to be charitable you are better off posting on the forum with an OOC note.

RE: the OP...how can anyone really know, if it's OOC or IC motivated, unless you ask the Player directly and they give you a concrete answer?
I mean, how often do you meet a truly altruistic merchant? When is enough actually enough, and can you judge greed from a distance?
During my time as a Player on this Server, I've learned a lot OOC which has helped me bring about a better IC Character, AND WITH IC motivations that would be correctly described as "greedy."
Generosity is generosity, even if another takes advantage of it. That's why we got the concept of Karma, mate.

To be fair this just hurts new players on server and benefits no one, since I doubt a player who been playing here for 5-10 years really needs the gold.

On the topic of karma, it's really quite entertaining if they pick the item up, relist it... and fail to sell it at the increased price.
I once got a few extra thousand for a +4 studded leather armor when someone did that to me.

It might not be greed. It may be that they just really want to be able to buy that one item that they want from the epic store and to do so, they need to hustle a little. Those prices are only friendly to the veterans that have played here for years. Someone new looks at those prices and dies a little inside.

Don't worry, even veterans die from looking at it

It warms my heart to see that the entrepreneurial spirit lives on here.
Truly. Without it, we'd still be living in straw huts and etc...
As a wise man with the street name of Shoestring once said:
"You got to be greedy. If you ain't greedy, the greedy ni**a gon' step on yo' toes every time!"

I always find these topics interesting. In all honesty, your best bet is to just hold onto stuff until you stumble on the right person who may want to use it and can IC if that's your fear.
On the topic of greed or selflessness that is attached to the action, well i encourage you to think like this... in the best actions of the good hearts from what we call the human is not for for nothing, it's always for something. This is where incentives come into play be it spiritual or material. This is why altruism in reality is inverted in it's practical form, yes. Lol
I think i talked to others about that some time ago, DMs and Players once in a trouble shooting scenario for a situation.
Some might be OOC some might be IC. But honestly there's not a good or bad that's attached to this action related to the topic, it's really just a neutral thing because once you give up an item it's no longer yours it's now anothers and you can't hold them for ransom to give it back so it can be used for what you want it to be used rather than what they want. But on the bright side, you did make some gold in the process either way!

I think at the core of the issue the fault is in the auction system, which is undeniably too out of character for a roleplaying world.
If I ever become active again and finish other projects first, expect to see it die in a fire and replaced with something much better, like actual auctions ran by NPCs, items displayed in the actual world, stalls that can be placed with their own little interface.
In all honesty you could just purge the use of the NPC auction system we have on this server and let players run their own without the need of NPC's. There are those that do that here as we speak and get RP out of it.

That is precisely my point. It hurts both new players and old players who still happen to have poor characters, but, for some people, too much is never enough. Some make fortunes out of fleecing their fellow players and hoarding stuff that could have gone to lowbies, and others yet haven't reached quite the same level of success, but aspire to it.
Are you millions in imaginary gold still not enough?
