Background Avatar Paint.net

Hey there, so I am having trouble with my avatar pic. I am trying to get rid of background/black area in my profile avatar.

I have installed paint.net but still am having some trouble after watching a couple videos, and can't seem to be able to have that white (Edit: black, not white anymore) area gone after using the magic wand and deleting the surrounding color.

Do you happen to know what I am doing wrong there?

Images that want a transparent background have to be either a .GIF or .PNG, and saved with Transparency check-boxed (and in most programs this also requires layers, not not all—some you can choose which pixel colors to automatically make transparent (which is probably like paint...problem is, ALL pixels of that color are are made Transparent, which can also occur in the image you want to keep!).
