Spell Combat Log Info: distance to "see/hear"

Question: is the actual ingame distance from a toon in which your toon sees/hears a spell being cast, and then appearing in the Combat Log, equal to or greater than the distance for actually hearing Chat/emotes *which shows up usually in the Chat log box.

It seems to be greater, the ability to auto-determine the casting of spells, than the distance to hear toons talking. Does anyone actually know the distance? And, is it relative to like, say, the circle of darkvision?
