CONTACT MEDALLION
I t e m U s e G u i d e
A Sending is a communicative evocation spell that allows you to contact a particular creature with whom you are familiar and send a short message of twenty-five words or less.
This message is spoken by the caster (the spell itself having both verbal and somatic components) and delivered mentally to the recipient, who recognizes you if they know you, and can answer in like manner immediately. A creature with an Intelligence score as low as 1 can understand the Sending, though the subject’s ability to react is limited, as normal, by its Intelligence score. Even if the Sending is received, the recipient is not obligated to act upon it in any manner.
Wards that affect spell casting may similarly impede an incoming or outgoing Sending spell, and these conditions should be kept in mind when in participating in DM events and visiting guild halls. Use of the Sending spell without it's mechanical counterpart (cast, still spell, medallion use, etc) is considered metagaming.
This guide is designed to provide step-by-step instructions for in-game use of the generalized Sending spell, and the "Contact Medallion" that uses it.
I. THE BASICS
1. Cast the Sending Spell. (Use of the Contact Medallion is detailed below)
2. Type your message using the correct template. (See: III. SENDING FORMULA)
3. If successful, your Sending is delivered to its recipient.
II. THE CONTACT MEDALLION
The "Contact Medallion" is an in-game item that allows the amulet's wearer to insta-cast the spell "Sending."
To use this amulet, you will first need to equip it. This can be done via double click, or by right clicking on the item and selecting "equip". Once equipped, it will be occupy the "neck" slot of your character's inventory. Right click the amulet in this slot, and select "Sending". If your character is not selected as the current target, you will need to click on them with the spell cursor to cast it on yourself.
Proceed to the next step: III. SENDING FORMULA.
THE CONTACT MEDALLION + CHARGES
The Contact Medallion can hold up to 50 charges, with each Sending using 3 of these stored charges.
When the charges of your medallion have been consumed, you can "refill it" using the recharge apparatus in the Eastern Farmlands in exchange for gold. Each time you recharge, however, you increase the risk of your amulet being destroyed in the process. You can view the amulet's remaining charges by right-clicking the item and examining it. Additionally, when equipped, the right-click menu displays the number of available Sendings alongside the option of the same name - ie: Sendings: 9.
III. SENDING FORMULA
Mages and Clerics making use of the spell will need to wait until the 5-round cast time has concluded, during which time your character will repetitively cast the spell. Interrupting this will cause the spell to fail. Scrolls and items (such as the Contact Medallion) are instant-use and have no cast time.
Once you have "cast" your Sending spell, you have a window of 300 seconds (five minutes), during which time you can send your message.
The Sending spell requires a specific template in order to be properly delivered, however. The formula for this is as follows:
Type your message via the in-game chat window (or the skywings client extension chat window) and, once written, send it by pressing the enter key. For best results, keep it brief; you are limited to 25 words.Character Name{space}Message:{space}text
↪ e.g: Drizzt Do'Urden Message: Get off my lawn!
If successful, the recipient will receive the designated message in their chat window with a precursor emote informing the player that a Sending is being delivered by magical means. If unsuccessful, you will get an error message in your combat window explaining why the attempt failed.
Ensure you have checked the following:If you receive an error, you can attempt to make the changes required and resend your message without recasting, so long as it's done within the time allocated. If the Sending has expired, or you have changed zones, you will need to recast it.
- The message formula is closely followed and written correctly.
- The recipient's name is spelled correctly and the character is online.
- The message is within the character limit.
- No more than five minutes have elapsed since the spell was cast.
IV. TROUBLESHOOTING
⁍ The spell expired before I could send my message.
Some people find it helpful to pre-type their intended message (still using the above formula) prior to casting their Sending. This is a viable option, so long as you do not send the message/press enter before using the item and/or casting.
⁍ I'm still getting an error, and I've triple checked the possible reasons why this might happen.
If the character you are attempting to message is currently/has recently made use of the 'disguise' system, you may have some issues reaching them via Sending. If they are currently disguised, you will need to Send to their disguised name. If recently disguised, the player will need to relog before being able to receive a message. This also impacts tells.
