Removing Default Belts

Does there exist a means to completely remove the default belt that often gets appended to certain armor items? The appearance kit gives me the option to modify the appearance of the belt but it doesn't offer an option to remove it (or even modify the color). The only time it gets visually removed is when the armor is equipped after transiting into a new area (though it may still appear to other players due to a weird graphics glitch).
I find it annoying it gets appended in the first place because it's often unsightly when juxtaposed against whatever appearance I select for my character's armor using the appearance kit. Is that a function of the core game engine itself or is that something the DEVs can modify?
