Illithid Hive

Unread post by Tanlaus »

Just fully explored this area for the first time over the weekend with an entire group of UD players who had never been through it either. It’s a CR 16 area and most of us were 30 but it was fun to do anyway. Hard enough to find places you don’t know like the back of your hand on the server, even harder in the UD.

I can also see why more level appropriate people don’t adventure there. A group of mind flayers blasting away can be dangerous and you’d probably need a full group of your own, something hard to come by in the UD.

All that being said it’s an immense and amazingly well crafted area with interesting encounters you won’t find anywhere else on the server and a unique boss.

I know this suggestion goes against current server philosophy, and probably won’t get much traction, but i think it should be open to surfacers as well. Purely from the standpoint that it’s a great area that gets almost zero traffic.

There’s an empty prison cell near the starting area. You could always have an area on the surface where a group of adventurers are ‘captured’ that transitions them into the cell as a starting point. Then add some option to return them after.

Again probably untenable but it’s a shame to see such a unique, well crafted area go to waste.

I was part of the group that explored it recently with Tanlaus and I concur: it's easily the coolest area in the UD that gets almost zero traffic. The Illithid's put up a similar challenge (damage wise) to Oghranns and Driders for a lvl 30 character, albeit they do die very quickly. As an example, I rarely (almost never) need to use healing kits with my wizard in the other epic areas in the UD, however, I had to used them frequently in the hive.

As Tanlaus mentioned, no CR 16 PC will go there because they will easily get wiped but I think a good solution would be to make it an epic area (more difficult PvE with epic chests) so it gets traffic from the CR 30 PC's in the UD.

That would be a better UD solution. Also having an elder brain boss does seem like it would be an epic encounter.

Just want to bring this to the top of the inbox.

This is a really well made/cool area but the TLDR of it is that the challenge rating doesn't match the difficulty, which means generally only level 30's go here for a scenic tour.

The suggestions are either:

a) turn it into an epic dungeon worthy of visiting

b) have the difficulty match the CR so lower level character's can go here
