Get past 1st level?

Unread post by Silvermane »

I've tried a couple characters, one Warlock the other Barbarian, neither can get past 1st level. tried the delivery quest, couldn;t get it done as one of the people weren't available, sewer mobbed by muggers, Soulbar (?) attacked by wolves and imp, just seems with 6-12 hp there is just no chance. Are there other non conflict quests for a solo adventurer?

thx

If you start in the Baldur's Gate Harbor, a bunch of NPCs around should have quests that send you around the city.

The kid that spawns next to you can give you a tour if you don't know the way around.

Good places to level are the River east of the Bridge, East Chionthar, which has Bandits and Wolves around or if you're brave, the Graveyard (take a blunt weapon with you! )

It's also worth adding roleplay xp of 20-30 per message send while roleplaying with other players can add up quite to make for easy xp at lower levels. That being said I know there's enough xp to level up most races between docks, temple and east district without seeing combat.

Send me a PM. When I first joined this server in February 2020, someone gifted me a few pieces of equipment that made my initial run on the server (and the associated learning curve) less threatening and subsequently more enjoyable. I am more than happy to pay it forward and get you started with a few pieces of kit. If you find your results are similar to mine, then I encourage you to do the same one day... when you can.

Cheers!

Consider using your initial gold at sorcerous sundries and the thayan shop. Mage armor, barkskin and heroism potions will do wonders for low level survivability. Also check out Maltz and Darius shop for some cheap bonus hp equipment.

Enjoy

Grouping is another option.

If you post your time, I can see what I can do to help out.

Also there is LFG in game and on the discord channel to help.

I assume you are past level 1 by now but I'll throw my two coppers in.

There are 6 easy quest in and around Baldur's Gate that will grant you over the 1k xp you need for level 2. 3 of them located in the docks, two in the farmlands, and one in the palace district. After that there's an easy quest to kill a couple bats in the palace district and a quest to retrieve some stolen supplies in the docks that will require killing some bandits which is risky but not too challenging for most classes. (if you are starting out as wizard/sorc, buffed summons are the difference between life and death, as are potions, healing kits, and scrolls)

If you can't manage the bandits, the graveyard west of the east farmlands (not the graveyard east of north farmlands, that is called the fields of the dead and.. you will be joining their ranks if you go there) is a good place to gain xp. As a bonus, look for a random spawning NPC in the farmlands for an extra boost.

That said, I kinda feel like walking into the fields of the dead under-leveled is a right of passage around here.. so.. have at it.

Check Mudd's in the north east area (shopping district) of East Gate from time to time.. Gear that would usually cost 10k-50k in a shop can be found at the auction house for 2k-10k. For instance, I started a new character today and found full plate +3 armor with 4/bludgeoning for 7.5k for sale. That's pretty rare but there are plenty of cheap options to get you started there.

Cloaks of regen can be found in the Palace District and are extremely helpful. They'll cost around 9k, so once you save up enough gold, look for them. It doesn't take long to get 9k, but you'll probably be buying other items, so probably around level 4 you'll be looking at one. If you are lucky, you mgiuth find one in Mudd's or in a random shop another player sold. I bought mine at the shop in the farmlands for 5k. There are a few shops players frequently sell to due to other shops either not buying items or having lower percentage buy rates with lower max buy value. 1.4k seems to be the most any shop will pay for higher value items.

Now, it is generally frowned on by folk to give too much info about the server on forums. My guess is, that is why you aren't being told where to go to look for quest exactly. I've probably said enough already to have some fingers wagged at me so, I might as well make them face palm.

If you are planning to play a weaker starting class (such as Wizard/Sorc, Rogue, Warlock, Bard, Monk), there is a trick to giving them an early boost. Start with an easy class (such as Fighter, Barbarian, Paladin) and level them up to 10, then RCR them in the Nexus. You get 100% exp from RCR prelevel 10 so it's an easy way to get the most frustrating early game classes through their roughest spot. I'd say it is a bit exploitive of the RCR system to do this and I surely would never do it myself or advocate for it :liar: but it's worth keeping in mind that it is an option.

The usual advice people give though is just not to play one of those harder starting classes till you have a handle of the server.. The challenge gets easier (though not much easier) once you know what you are doing.

I am ! And its been ROUGH, lol, all good though, makes you appreciate the alternate reality our avatars live in :D I enjoy everything that's been written to assist me (and others), I am sure there are others that might have a challenging time of it as I. Solace in numbers and diligence, loving the world in all its idiosyncrasies an amazing project we get to enjoy and one that will certainly lead to donations as the standard MMO is lacking everything that the original NWN 2 is. I would be so bold to call what they have done here in balance and dedication NWN 3 !

Thank you again all

Fantastic attitude to have Silvermane. No matter how difficult some of the content seems at first, try to always remember you only get to experience it for the first time once. As you will no doubt come to realize folks that have been playing on the Server for years (or even decades) might make it seem like things are "too easy" while you are raising an eyebrow wondering if you're playing on the same server. However, everyone at one point was in that position where they couldn't solve the puzzle that made things easy... Make no mistake they all lament not having what you currently have (ignorance of the meta) and wherever possible avoid losing what you have in favor of the knowledge others have. As players we are in many ways our own worst enemies, and once you have learned how the server works you can not unlearn it. The easier it becomes the less 'fun' PvE becomes and that is where most of your in game time is generally spent (when DMs aren't available and/or you don't have non-adventure RP going on with other players).

Best of luck and cheers,

Oh you are a warlock? I feel the pain. I got mine to level 2...before I smashed my monitor (figuratively) and that was with knowledge and equipment of a long term player.

Keep at it. Your time on the server will be of what you make of it.

hehe! Definitely know the feeling ! I found it quite a challenge, I've played NWN 2 Warlocks in the main game and only 2 other servers in the past, this particular world set up is an entertaining ongoing challenge, so far I have managed to get to level 6 pure Lock. Yes mentally distressing would be the badge

The Darius shop in the East Gate, near the Wide, sells +5 hp items for every slot. You can buy a full set for less than your starting gold amount, and have close to 50hp at level 1. It is quite a large help and goes a long way to making the start more forgiving until you learn where to go.

Look for Egil Darius not far from the entry to the palace district, at the NW of the map.

First tip: Hearty Backpack. From the smith in the Gate. The +HP is super important at level 1. I get it on every character (and I have a history of altaholism...).

Second tip: There's a campfire outside of the Gate near the graveyard. Stop by. Talk to people (in character)
- Someone else may need help with the Graveyard
- Another character may give you a "quest" (my druid's done that a time or two - "If you'll return the dead to whence they come, I will offer you nature's blessings" - you'd be surprised how quickly you'll get 1k XP when exploring the graveyard buffed....).
- You might wind up roped into something
- And any RP will give you some XP anyways

For my characters, the melee characters just blew through everything once they had a high AC. The ranged had to be more careful, but it wasn't hard to random into friends.

"low level" problems seem to end once you get a little cash for Mudds. You can get your AC for many characters to where most low-level mobs need natural 20s to hit you, with some "trash" on Mudds. +3's of whatever tends to be cheap, and you can occasionally get a cheap +4. You'll need to clear the Graveyard a couple times first, but your first purchase should likely be armor/defense.
