[BUG] Whispers in other languages are heard at larger distances

I noticed when players whisper in a foreign language that my character understands, you can hear it at say distance rather than whisper distance.

The way you can tell is if you do not see the gibberish beneath the translation then it's supposed to be a whisper. Players should keep this in mind, or those who are talking can emote that they are whispering so the others who hear it know.

I am pretty sure that the translation is a server message and not general chat message. This might be the reason and the key to fixing it.

The change happened last year and here is the thread that led to it: viewtopic.php?p=893584#p893584

I didn't like the translations showing up in the combat log. There's code there in case anyone wanted to have a look, though I am not sure how it was ultimately implemented.

Looks like it would need a check on the message for the [/w] flag, and then implement a range check between [oSpeaker] and [oReceiver] to make sure they are in whisper range.

This has been happening for over a year. I recall a particular, muttered insult from years ago...

I wanted to bump this because I was reminded today that the thin reason Red Wizards were excluded from an entire plotline rests on one person who speaks Thayan hearing our WHISPERED conversation from across the room while our Knights guarded our personal space.

If we had known then that EVERYONE who speaks Thayan could hear that whispered conversation it never would have happened. Let us know when this bug is fixed. If you have questions about how to fix it please post them in the thread. The solution posted above may fix the problem.

Just brutal. Behavior like this is an absolute plague, some people really need to either clean up their acts, or just uninstall.

There really isn't much you can do to protect yourself from this otherwise, at least not in a way that isn't either cheezy/tedious(sending your compatriots IC tells "in Thayan"), or whispering in common using *in Thayan* as an emote, which is still subject to douche-baggery. Here's to hoping someone manages to fix this issue at some point.

Yeah, this strikes me as very wrong. It's a known bug, and then someone uses it to metagame? The community should hold itself to a higher standard than that.

Simple solution for the time being - you hear a whisper, but that person isn't right next to you? File it away as something you know, but your character doesn't. You don't need to have your character know literally everything, that's absurd. Whoever did it should have known better.

While I appreciate folks jumping to my defense, I wanted to test to see what is actually visible. Please review the following screenshots:

Image

This, as the screenshot shows, is the maximum distance two characters can stand apart and still hear what the other character says.

When standing at max distance, we tested what you see when speaking in normal volume vs whispering. The first on this screenshot is "say." The second is a whisper.

Image

Please note the whispered text doesn't indicate that it is a whisper.

As frustrating as this was, I don't think we should distribute pitchforks yet. The player may not have realized it was a whisper (although we were emoting that we were whispering). There was a lot of dialogue and it's possible the emotes of us whispering was missed? I'm on the fence but I think there's some plausible deniability here.

Obviously this needs to be fixed though. If the fix is not easy, can we add something to the translated message that it was a whisper?

I honestly can't twist my thought process enough to figure out a reason why my character could ever hear a whisper from across the room. Whoever did this was blatantly metagaming and that's pretty sad.
I wasn't there for this, but it -could- have been an honest mistake. First time I heard "whispers" in another language, I didn't know they were meant to be whispers.

Edited to add: Just saw the post above mine, and yeah. The whispers in another language don't indicate they are whispers. The only way to know it's NOT a whisper is to notice that there's no translation text appearing. And to someone who doesn't know to look for that, it's easy to make an honest mistake.

Translation is spoken trough server, is it not? How can you not notice [server]? Also, isn't it in grey? Come on.

This is my thought. It was still a gut punch when I realized what happened.

Look at the screenshot. The "say" and "whisper" look identical when translated. The only difference is that the "whisper" doesn't have the garbled, untranslated part around it. To someone who doesn't know, it's a very easy mistake to make. Like I said, I made that mistake the first time it happened around me.
