Wizard / Eldritch Knight

Thinking about a Wizard / Eldritch Knight build, and when at W11 EK 10, wizard spells will be maxed out, right? Or is there any further development? So is it advisable to squeeze another class in there before level 20? Do I need to level as a wizard in to have the wizard feats opened up? Rather, will closing out the build with all wizard levels continue to allow the character to grow and develop as an epic level wizard? Thanks

Wizards no longer max out on spells known (in the spellbook), but there is a max of spells a PC can memorize, based on 20 caster levels + caster Ability score + spell slot items.

Further or epic level progression could be said comes from Epic Spells (which are Feats).

Yes, some Feats related to the caster class can only be taken if leveling up with that class.

If you choose 1-10 Wizard, 11-20 EK, 21-30 Wizard, you won’t get any extra Wizard feat slots because a build needs 20+ Wizard levels (essentially only Wizard 30 maxes those epic feat slots).

Look into Dragon Slayer class. 10 Wiz/10 EK/10 Dragon Slayer with practiced spellcaster is the standard Melee Combat wizard. Has full casting progression (or 29 out of 30 I forget) and very good melee. Can be built Int based or Str based.

Thanks for the suggestions. Full disclosure, it is my daughter's character, off in college, but the character is too well established to redirect toward Dragon Slayer. But closing out 20 with three levels or fighter or rogue or ranger and taking practiced spellcaster might be interesting. But just sticking to wizard might be OK, too.

What if it is simple and W 7 / EK10 / F3, but then W4 to max spell slots, and then only W when a feat is coming? How would this compare to just W 20 / EK10?

Take https://wiki.bgtscc.net/index.php?title=Anointed_Knight (or https://wiki.bgtscc.net/index.php?title ... f_Darkness) instead of F3. First one gives you tumble & heal and 2 useful feats.

Overall try to reach CL30.

If you go with Rogue levels, you might benefit from mixing Arcane Trickster in there, too.

You'd get W5/R3/AT3/EK3 by level 14, before maxing out AT/EK and getting 2 more Wizard levels by 30. The main caveat here, though, is that it requires you to be human/half-elf, or have a favored class of either Rogue (tieflings, halflings, svirfneblin) or Wizard (moon/sun elves, drow, Deep Imaskari) to avoid a 20% multiclass penalty.

If you wanted to dodge the multiclass penalty on a different race, and had the skill points to burn, you could instead get W5/EK6/Bodyguard3/AT3 by level 17. However, this will cost a lot of extra skill points unless you take Able Learner.
