I was wondering what mental rule people have in regards to RPing with a partner. Please share yours!

Mine:

Always try to bounce off with what your partner's character is saying - they hear you, you hear them.

This is a big book we're all collectively writing where no one is the protagonist. Sometimes its good to shut up and let another person shine

This pretty much.

RP is a collaborative project that is a perpetual work in progress. It can't be won, it can't be lost. The ultimate overriding objective is to write cool stories to be enjoyed by all participating players (though not necessarily the characters).

"Don't judge your RP partner's character behavior too soon. Listen to them, find out why they do what they do. You may get positively surprised both."

Meaning, no matter if it's a friend of my character, or business partner, or guild buddies, i care not only about what i myself want. But i try to understand what the other player wants for their character. Then i try to support that if my character is able to, and try to make it happen together.
