The New Posts listing change (in display)

Hello!

The change to limit/shorten the posts available when selecting New Posts is…not as nice or resourceful as it once (recently!!) was.

I know that the “25 million seconds” parameter was changed down to the default setting…but now I for one only see 1-4 new posts, at anytime. Perhaps a new setting of “1 million seconds” will be better, and diminish the memory buffer or whatever was causing the Forums to be slow?!?

Cheers.

I would recommend an increase to at least 86,400 seconds. I arrive at this number from [24 hours * 60 minutes/hour * 60 seconds/minute] and would therefore show any retained post from the last day.
Any multiple of that would be a set number of days, so other reasonable breakpoints would be 259,200 seconds for three days, or 604,800 seconds to retain any post from the last week (7 days).

For comparison, Steve's suggestion of 1-million seconds is a bit under a week (11.57 days), while the former value of 25-million seconds is 289.35 days (two thirds of a year).

Why was it changed at all?

Would it be possible to reconsider the retention time please? "An hour" seems rather impractical. Even just the last day of retention would improve the experience of someone checking multiple times a day with plans to respond later.
The current system appears to activley discourage frequent visiting to the site to check for thread updates unless either 1) the user memorizes where all the posts the plan to reply to later are, or 2) avoids visiting the forums for updates unless they avticely have time to respond to everything they plan to.

This might be just a personal skill issue, but I was tempted to make a new suggestion thread out of frustration as it took me close to ten minutes to find this thread to make this comment.

Nah, you're right. One day I had no posts to view. I'd rather it go back to the original myself where when I clicked new it showed everything I wanted. Now its barely anything. Liek right now, I had maybe two posts on new, unread doesnt show what I have read and if I want to go back to it better hope I remember the thread or posted on it.

Endelyon had set the buffer to 25 million seconds, but recently the Forum has been slow, so she set the New Posts buffer to the phpBB default.

With consequences!! 8-)

I see, I get a slow forum here or there personally, but I figure either a net thing, or someone hitting it, or what not. Usually, Cloudflare was turned on or whatever it is and its back to normal speeds minus waiting on Cloudflare verification. I just want the New posts back to what it was as it always had what I wanted to see.

Yeah it's pretty annoying with the lower timer, you all aren't wrong about that. As Steve mentioned the reason is that long sessions are causing the forum to have severe lag until the sessions table is purged, which I was having to do almost daily to avert the slowdown.

I'm not really sure why it worked for a long time and only recently started causing problems but my plan is to bump it up incrementally to see how high we can increase it without causing the forums to lag on a daily basis. We started at 1 hour since that was phpBB's default which is indeed annoyingly slow. As of the time of this post I've upped that timer to 12 hours for further observation. If there's no problem at 12 hours after a week or two, we'll bump it to 24, and so on, to try to reach the perfect balance of convenience and functionality.

So for now we're at a 12 hour timer, and as long as there are no issues with that, we will see further increases in the coming weeks. :)
