Learning spells as a wizard

Hi there,

I know by now how to learn spells, you have to use the talent 'Study Spell' on the scroll, afterwards you cast it ... works fine when it's some sort of cast with an area or on yourself (this far learned succesfully every spell level 1 I tried (about 8 or so), BUT I had a few spells like

'Inflict fear'
'Shocking grasp'
'Charm person'

They can only be cast directly upon an enemy target as far as I know ... tried the first two, scrolls gone, and it didn't say that it worked (which obviously would be wrong) but not even that it was a failure. So my question is ...

"Is there any way or place where I can try to learn these spells in a safe environment, like a dummy at an academy or such or was I just unlucky with these spells??"

If someone can help me, thanks in advance ;)

Don't cast them on enemies, being in combat cancels the learning. Instead, try targeting:
  • Items in your inventory (always a good choice; most spells can be cast on items because it's the only way to craft scrolls, standard potions, and wands)
  • Placeables like trash barrels
  • The ground (if applicable)
  • Nearby PCs or friendly NPCs, as the situation permits
Also keep in mind you can learn spells from any spellcasting item. Staves, wands, potions... only nonmagical herbs are exempt, IIRC.

"Cast on nearby PCs"
Ah yes, good old Hogwarts fashioned way of learning offensive spells...
Jokes aside, I would actually like to see how two wizards train lesser circle spells on each other. Should be much of fun

First of all, thanks for the answers ...

now I also know that I can learn spells from other items also ((which was totally new for me)). And the info, that it didn't work in combat was also really helpful.

Problem is still, that for Spells like 'charm person' I still haven't found a single NSC on whom I can cast it. Targetting them leaves the casting icon greyed out. Maybe they aren't friendly or I don't know, totally lost here. And I have no idea how a NSC would react when I cast an offensive spell on them just to learn it. I would be pissed, if I were the NSC.

Maybe I have really to find a PC who would be willing.

But as for the Icon on the right corner ... have absoultely no idea, what you are talking about @Lockonnow

Yeah, that's why you cast it on an item or placeable. Most likely something in your inventory.

Okay, that really works o.O' ... thanks a lot ... now I'm a happy camper. Hopefully I get another scroll of 'shocking grasp' but that's another problem not concerning here.

Hm, now I have a similar problem with these two level 4 spells:

Lower Spell Resistance
Unluck

After the activation of the learning whenever I try to use that scrolls I cannot find any target ... neither something in my inventory, nor myself or friendly NPCs, so are those two spells buggy and can't be learned or am I again to dumb to do it? :D

A little bit of necromancy here, but some spells are impossible to learn from an item for whatever reason. There is a list here, if anyone needs it. Pretty sure it's almost up to date. The spells marked red are what you want to pick up on level up as a wizard who plays Pokémon wants to complete their Pokédex spellbook.

Based on the contents of that list, they're primarily spells you could not acquire scrolls of at the time the guide was written. I'm skeptical of its accuracy, given that some of those issues have been resolved over the years.

That list that was linked is very out of date.

This entire process is in need of being replaced.

Worst-case scenario, there are less than 10 spells you just can't learn from spell scrolls, and one is only available in the Underdark (surfacers beware).

I know for a fact the list is not up to date since there was some firey-performance spell added for bardizard or whatnot and it's not on that list.

Even so, the list functions well for something that has not been updated for about 3 years.

If someone kindly creates a list of

1. missing spells
2. missing shops where spells are sold

I am happy to make a 2025 update to the original mage spell list.

Cheers.

[EDIT]: the original list was for mage spells only. Bard spells are spontaneously cast (like sorcerers) and therefore exempt from the original purpose of supplying a resource for wizard players who wanted to properly plan an RCR or similar rebuild of their character.
