Suggested PrC - Justiciar of Tyr

Unread post by Obvious_Illusion »

I'm biased playing a Tyrran. But as a bit of fun (but also an actual suggestion), I thought I'd give a suggested adaptation for BGTSCC/NWN2.

Justiciar of Tyr comes from 'Player's Guide to Faerun' (pp. 63-65)
https://www.realmshelps.net/charbuild/c ... rtyr.shtml

----

As servants of the god of justice, priests of Tyr are expected to be paragons of law and order who embody the principles espoused by the Maimed God at all times. Justiciars are the very elite of Tyr's mortal servants, and they act as living embodiments of their god's portfolio. They battle lawlessness and injustice with the same fervor that paladins battle evil, neither asking nor giving quarter in their quest to bring perfect, utopian order to Faerûn. Some individual justiciars are permanently stationed in large cities with a strong Tyrran presence to serve as judges or magistrates. Others are assigned to travel frontier regions such as the North and establish law and civil order in the small towns that dot the wild lands of Faerûn. High-level justiciars sometimes travel to the planes of Chaos to strike directly against outsiders such as slaadi or demons.

Clerics and paladins make up the vast majority of justiciars, but a fair number come from the ranks of multiclass fighter/clerics, and a few were rangers before taking up the prestige class. Rogue/cleric justiciars are very rare, but not completely unknown. Multiclass monks, sorcerers, and wizards, however, are all but unheard of among the ranks of the justiciars. Because of alignment and deity restrictions, barbarians, bards, druids, and spirit shamans are never justiciars of Tyr.

Class Requirements:
Alignment: Lawful good
Skills: Diplomacy 7 ranks, Knowledge (local) 4 ranks, Knowledge (religion) 6 ranks
Base Attack Bonus: +5
Spells: Able to cast 2nd-level divine spells
Patron Deity: Tyr

Class Features:
- Hit Die: d8
- Base Attack Bonus: Medium
- High Saves: Fortitude & Will
- Weapon Proficiencies: Justiciars of Tyr are proficient with all simple and martial weapons.
- Armor Proficiencies: Justiciars of Tyr are proficient with all armor and shields, including tower shields.
- Skill Points: 2 + Int Modifier.
- Class Skills: Concentration, Craft, Diplomacy, Heal, Lore: Arcana, Lore: Geography, Lore: Local, Lore: Religion, Lore: The Planes, Sense Motive, Spellcraft, Survival

- Spells per Day/Spells Known: At every level except 4th and 8th level, the Justiciar of Tyr gains more spells per day (and spells known, if applicable) as if she had also gained a level in whatever divine spellcasting class granted her access to 2nd-level spells before she added the prestige class. If a character has more than one spellcasting class before becoming a Justiciar of Tyr, she must decide which class she adds the new level for purposes of determining spells per day.

Smite Anarchy: At 1st level, the Justiciar of Tyr gains the ability to make a special attack against creatures of chaotic alignment. When using Smite Anarchy, the Justiciar of Tyr applies her Charisma modifier to her attack roll and levels in Justiciar of Tyr to the damage delivered. Smite Anarchy may be used once per day at 1st level, twice per day at 5th level, and three times per day at 10th level.

Bureaucratic Knowledge: Although battling the forces of chaos is one of the primary functions of the justiciar, she is also expected to have a thorough grasp of legal processes and legal debate in civilizations all across Faerûn. Beginning at 2nd level, the character gains a bonus equal to half her Justiciar of Tyr level on all Diplomacy, Knowledge (Local), and Gather Information checks.

Blind One's Eyes: At 3rd level, the Justiciar of Tyr gains Blind Fight as a feat.

Discern Illusions and Lies: At 4th level, the Justiciar of Tyr gains the ability to cast Detect Illusion once per day as a spell-like ability equal to her character level.
https://wiki.bgtscc.net/index.php?title=Detect_Illusion
Additionally, when a DM is present, this spell may be cast to instead function as Discern Lies. Each round, you concentrate on one subject, who must be within range. You know if the subject deliberately and knowingly speaks a lie by discerning disturbances in its aura caused by lying. The spell does not reveal the truth, uncover unintentional inaccuracies, or necessarily reveal evasions.
https://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/discernLies.htm

Axiomatic Protection: At 5th level, the Justiciar of Tyr comes under the effects of Protection from Alignment (Chaos) at all times. This applies a +2 deflection bonus to armor class, a +2 bonus to saving throws, and immunity to mind-affecting spells and spell-like effects used by creatures of the Chaos alignment. If an effect would dispel this, the Justiciar of Tyr may spend a standard action to reactivate this aura. This is replaced by Aura of Absolute Law at 10th level.

Order's Calm: At 7th level, three times per day, a Justiciar of Tyr can cast Remove Fear as a spell-like ability.

Blade of Justice: At 8th level, the Justiciar of Tyr may cast Lawful Sword once per day as a spell-like ability equal to her character level.
https://wiki.bgtscc.net/index.php?title=Lawful_Sword

Dispel Injustice: At 9th level, the Justiciar of Tyr can cast Greater Dispel Magic 1/day as a spell-like ability equal to her character level. Justiciars of Tyr use this to dispel chaos and instill order.

Aura of Absolute Law: At 10th level, the Justiciar of Tyr has proven herself such a shining beacon of order and justice that chaos cannot stand against her or her allies. She is under the effect of Magic Circle Against Alignment (Chaos) at all times, extending the benefits of Axiomatic Protection to allies within 10 feet. Additionally, the Justiciar of Tyr gains the Iron Will feat.

Ex-Justiciars of Tyr
A Justiciar of Tyr who slips into a non-lawful alignment or willingly commits an unjust act (such as robbing, assaulting, or murdering an innocent) loses access to her spellcasting abilities and all justiciar class features except weapon and armor proficiencies and bureaucratic knowledge. She regains her lost abilities and advancement potential if she atones for her actions.

------
Summary
10 levels of Justiciar of Tyr as above would net:
  • Simple/Martial/Armours/Tower Shield prof
  • Progression: +7 BAB, +7 Fort, +3 Ref, +7 Will, +8/10 divine spellcasting
  • Smite Anarchy 3/day
  • +5 Diplomacy, Gather Information, Lore (Local)
  • Blind Fight
  • Discern Illusions and Lies 1/day
  • Remove Fear 3/day
  • Lawful Sword 1/day
  • Greater Dispel Magic 1/day
  • Permanent Magic Circle Against Chaos
  • Iron Will
Design Notes:
  • Skills all fit fine, but not sure how craft should be split into NWN2?/BGTSCC
  • I probably went overboard adding armour/shield/tower shield prof!
  • Detect Chaos is removed; given Detect Evil isn't implemented for obvious RP reasons.
  • Bureaucratic Knowledge seems easier to implement as a flat bonus at half the normal amount. I've included diplomacy to represent 'legal discussion'. Could also include Sense Motive to represent cross-examining witnesses?
  • Axiomatic Spellcasting is removed given lack of law spells in game. Partially replaced by some other features.
  • Detect Lie - given Detect Illusions exists as a spell, this seems like a nice enough compromise, and then if a DM is present it could function as Discern Lies?
  • Maimed God's Boon removed, and instead gain permanent protection against chaos. Iron Will is given at 10th level to partly reflect increase in saves. The +Cha saves vs. chaos seems too powerful otherwise.
  • Order's Calm is normally more powerful in that you can end a number of different mind-affecting spells. Would there be a way to replicate that?
  • Dispel Injustice partly reflects the 10th level ability, watered down. Given at 9th level to reflect the +2 law DC you'd get.
  • Blade of Justice could become a +X damage against chaotic creatures, a flat bonus? But Lawful Sword seems like a nice alternative.
  • Aura of Absolute Justice is normally way more powerful in PnP - e.g., constant dispel chaos aura. The suggestion above seems like a thematically on brand but not nearly as powerful / not implemented version?

If we were to add this, it'd be its straight pnp version. Virtually everything it offers except detect lies is doable.

Oh cool! I assumed some of the features wouldn’t be doable? E.g. dispel [alignment] aren’t spells in BGTSCC/NWN2 for the 10th level feature.
And the bureaucratic knowledge would just be circumstantial?
