DM Winter’s Rules & Guidelines
Heyo! I’m Winter, a DM and long time lover of D&D and RP in general. Been playing D&D since I was about 11-12, and have a deep love for it that has translated into my adulthood. In this post I’ll be stating some rules, guidelines and general thoughts about my personal style, what you can expect from my events and what I expect from players that join my events.
- What you can expect from me as a DM
My main objective as a DM is the obvious one, to be able to facilitate and/or generate fun encounters for the players. I choose to do that through heavy RP, and you can expect that the most in my events. I’m not too overly fond of combat encounters, though I understand the use of them for a good story, and do make use of them when I feel necessary, or when players want to go on a rampage
I also am around quite often, I have a habit of leaving the game open in the background, so if you see me online do not be afraid to talk to me, I’ll get back to you in usually a couple of minutes. I’m pretty easy going.
Personally, I put a lot of emphasis on player choice. What drives me to DM, even in PnP, is seeing character growth and adapting to the many paths PCs can take. I’m always interested to hear about your character, and do not shy away from involving personal character’s stuff in my events when there is player consent and it makes sense for the story.
- Rules & Guidelines for my events
Obviously, be familiar with the Server’s General Rules, but other than that, these are the guidelines I believe important to mention:
And as a closing statement, the rule of “Please be f*cking nice to people”. I care about people feeling comfortable and care about the player's consent to mess with their characters. Not just that, I expect players in my events to be at least polite to each other. I don’t mean ICly, as I understand that IC conflict exists and, when OOCly the players are cool with it, generate nothing but fun opportunities. But OOC rudeness, homophobia, racism, transphobia, misogyny and any and all kinds of prejudice are how you get me to be angry, otherwise you’ll have a good time. So in as few words as possible, be nice to each other, please.> IC Please! - Keep OOC to a minimum during events, use it only if necessary. And be mindful of your actions, as NPCs will take them as IC.
> Party Chat - It’s in your best interest to use party chat during events, so it’s certain that I’ll be able to see any and all messages.
> Don’t Rest - Please don’t rest without either asking (and receiving confirmation) or waiting for me to allow it.
> Death - In my events, unless stated otherwise, PC death will be a KO with varying degrees of how bad the injury is. I will also allow the PC to be healed/gain consciousness with a healing check or other methods of healing if it makes sense for the circumstance.
> Take your time - Please do take your time when going through my events. Even during things that seem like they will be a straight up fight, I usually give the opportunity to talk it through before combat. If there is something time sensitive in an event, you’ll know.
> Skill Checks - Do not be afraid to ask me to do skill checks, I do really like them. Also, don’t worry too much about your level, I heavily take the actual dice rolls into consideration, I put a lot of value on a 1 or a 20, even when the modifier is ridiculous. I enjoy the randomness of D&D, though I do reward investing points into skills, and I won't take them for granted.
Overall, I’m chill, pun intended, and have no problems answering any questions or comments. I humbly ask for feedback to any and all who have it, and aim to improve. Feel free to reach out to me through a PM here on the forums, or even on discord at “DM Winter#4659” for less official stuff, or a more fluid talk.
Thank you everyone for the opportunity to be your DM! I hope I meet your expectations and that you all have a good time.
