Role-playing through the Perceived Grind

Unread post by Steve »

* updated post made Wed Nov 21, 2018 8:18 pm GMT+1*

Two years ago I took up a new concept, rolled a new Character, in part to experience all the new Area updates—thanks to the awesome Devs!—and with the highest of goals, the attempt to have "direct" influence on the IG environment, for my Character to one day "change" the Sword Coast...whatever that may mean/achieve/result.

I decided it best to play this concept so that RP shall grow, progress, from a traditional "beginning" (and what is often the Level 1 / 0 XP place). EVEN THOUGH I have very little RL time to game on BGTSCC at the moment...compared to the past years (and even when I first tried this project, which ended only after reaching Level 10 (see below).

This new Character was formed from a desire for a Tyrran group of Paladins that I had initially tried to get "off the ground" with Xanfryst, Whistler and Electric Mayhem...but flattened out after a few weeks not getting into any regular groove.

So I decided to just give it a go myself, without any other Player support (though I'm still looking!).

So this is a continuation of the original idea/moment to put to the test or challenge the concept often promoted that the Server provides a too difficult environment to XP Progression, as well, encourages Grinding, which distracts from Role-play (and that simply one CANNOT progress without grinding and questing until mindless and numb...which I also kinda believe, and to which I kinda have already proved to myself! LOL).

I believe that the low level experience, the progression, is much better than the naysayers say, but I might also fail to RP out my Characters progression without resorting to OOC choices—as much as any of us can avoid OOC choices in regard to Leveling. Except when Role-play dictates the need, my Character will not RE-visit an Area in order to Grind—the idea is to take in as much Experience as possible in one go, Area by Area. Nor will he repeat Quests.

Let's see if I can actually finish the project this time!!! Lol.

So below will be continuation of the record of XP gain and time spent, empirical, but somewhat useful to compare with perspectives of the ease/difficulty of BGTSCC...of course, this is just one experience, with one set of variables. And under the guise of being a "high" role-player / high RP Server...though still just as interested in cool gear and "power" as anyone else. Hi M3nt!!! 8-)

That said, my current Character is ECL+0, and I twinked him with 4 epic-ish items, that I factored into his family history, and that which guide/empower his RP (I realize not every Player has this luxury of epic items). His build is fighter/melee.

Feel free to comment, or provide alternate experiences, just don't troll this thread. Unless you're Snarfman, who just IS a troll! 8-)

And feel free to "meet up" with my character, the knight-errant Henryk Urde. I'm pretty sure the more interaction he gets, the better chance I have in fulfilling my goals!

Coinciding with other Players who were interested in a fresh start on a new concept, it seemed an opportune moment, as well, a moment to put to the test or challenge the concept that the Server provides a too difficult environment to XP Progression, as well, encourages Grinding, which distracts from Role-play (and that simply one CANNOT progress without grinding and questing until mindless and numb).

The Leveling Experience:
  • Level 1 – 1.5 hours in the BG Graveyard with a Party. Half-hour of tavern RP = 3,000 xp
  • Level 2 – 1.5 hour doing the low level Baldur's Gate Quests (1800 XP). 2 hours of tavern RP. Less than 1 hour in Hilltop Ruins upper level = 6,000 xp.
  • Level 3 – 1.5 hour on Hilltop Ruins Letter Delivery quest and Wyrm Slaying (middle level). 1 hour tavern RP. Half hour trade way bandits. 1.5 hour adventuring in Party to East of Chionthar area (to be continued) = 10,000 xp
  • Level 4 – 1 hour adventuring in FAI deep cave and Gibberlings Cave (1800 XP); half hour in the Baldur's Gate sewers and Sewer Maintenance exploring; 3 hours in Soubar Bane Ruins and Northern Tradeway (unfortunately soloing; 3,000 xp) = 15,000 xp or Level 5.
Level 1–4 Summary – Sept. 1st through Sept. 22nd, 2016:
Hidden: show
Tavern RP hours: 3.5
Adventuring RP hours: 3.5
Questing hours: 3
Soloing and/or grinding area (single visit): 5.5

Total in-game hours spent: 15.5
Total useful items looted: 2
Total gold coin earned via selling crappy loot: 8,420 gp

Subjective Review: Even twinking just 2 epic-ish items made all low-level combat a total breeze ( =easy). With half my game time used up with "pure" RP, I am quite pleased with the time spent—there are investments that shall progress my Character further. Visiting an area for soloing/grinding just 1 time—without pure RP reason to return—seems like it might be challenging, at least limiting, since I'll have to "stay" in the Area for a some yet-to-be-decided amount of time, making the "visit" worth it, i.e., experience wise.
  • Level 5 – 2.5 hours in RP event (<100 xp); 1 hour adventure RP in Party (700 xp); 1 hr solo adventuring Billberry Island (1k xp); 1.5 hour attempt at doing the Bilberry Quest (died, lost 500 xp); 1 hour doing the Neris Dove stolen ring quest and RP in Baldur's Gate (1k xp); 2 hours on Tradeway South of Baldur's Gate killing bandits (2k xp) = 20,000
  • Level 6 – 1 hr tavern rp (<100 xp); 2 hours finally finishing the Bilberry Fetching Quest (2k xp mobs + quest); 4.5 hours in the Cloakwood, East grinding and RPing against the Tasloi (5k xp) = 28,000
  • Level 7 – 4 hours in Cloakwood Mines Level 1 & 2 (5500xp); RP adventure with Fain in Abandoned Mine (goblins) and defeat of some bad-tempered Orc in PvP (total 2500 xp; earned 1400 coin for RP services) = 36,000
  • Level 8 - Turned in Mishap in the Mines quest (750xp); 3 hours in South of Candlekeep (3 hrs grinding 8k+ xp) = 45,000
  • Level 9 - 2 hours in the 3rd level of Cloakwood Mines (3,000xp); About 5 hours total for 2 different RP adventures in Chionthar Ruins (one w/ Crater Blackrock) (1,000xp); completed Lizardmans Eggs quest (500xp); 1 hour in the Cloakwood Mines IV level (1,000xp); 1.5 hours in Seacave on RP adventure with Crater Blackrock (600xp); 1 hr N. of Beregost killing Goblins (1,000 xp); 2 hr adventure with Fressil Arniman, the talks-only-in-Dragon character (2,000xp + 800 quest xp (it was part of the RP!!)) = 55,000
  • Level 10 – 1 hour exploring in the Bridgefort Ruins (to be cont.) (500 xp); 1.5 hour in Gnoll Caves exploring Level 1 with Crater Blackrock (1,000 xp); 1 hour in BG Sewer Bowels (for kicks...; 500xp); 1.5 hour in the BG Sewer Bowels + Tombs (800xp); 3 hours of Tavern RP in Soubar, Winding Way (700xp earned, but 500xp lost to Server crash (200xp gained); *OLD PROJECT STOPPED AND PC CHEZAN DELETED *

Level 5–10 Summary – Sept. 23rd through December 31st, 2016:
Hidden: show
Tavern RP hours: 5
Adventuring RP hours: 15
Questing hours: 1
Soloing and/or grinding area (single visit): 23

Total in-game hours spent: 44
Total useful items looted: 0
Total gold coin earned via selling crappy loot: 55,000 gp

Subjective Review: Had the chance for 4 good RP adventures. Spent more time grinding than I would thought, but I was trying to make the most out of each area for XP gain, because of the challenge to not repeat areas unless RP dictates a return (which did happen with Abandoned Mines north of Beregost. Difficult to get regular adventuring partners, because the length of RL time it took me to spend on Chezan, during that length, others have leveled far beyond him. On the other hand, keep meeting new low-level Characters, but the question is whether they will stay for long.

BELOW IS THE 2ND ATTEMPT / NEW START OF THIS PROJECT
(begun Nov. 18, 2018)

Level 11—15 Summary – November 18 through December 26, 2018:

Total in-game hours spent: 40
Total Forum-based RP hours spent: 10
Total useful items looted: 2
Total gold coin earned via selling crappy loot: 100,000 coin +/-

Subjective Review: I'm surprised I spent just as much time gaining levels 11-15 as I previously did getting 6-10 on a previous attempt! I was much more conscious—read: OOC considerate! lol—when it came to choosing the highest time-to-XP payout Areas I could find. Still, though my "role-play" hours were only 1/3 of my total time spent, those hours seemed the most rewarding (as expected!). Not to say that I'm not thrilled to have leveled to 16 and the benefits that gives me as a Player to further experience the Server, it still shows that one can involve in Server-wide RP regardless of the Level of your toon.

It also seems to me that BGTSCC has too many options for the CR levels 10–16. I think that some of these Areas could be "upgraded" to be more challenging for the higher levels. I already know that I simply skipped a few Areas, and won't be exploring them, at least for XP and Adventure (though always open to RP reasons).

On a personal note: I've leveled sooooo many toons in the mids now, that I think I finally hit tilt, and cannot imagine to do it again...at least at this stage. What I yearn for is still more reason to have a near complete PC experience and "life" that would complete itself just in, say, the lower 10's of Leveling. But I know that is hardly possibly, because already in this second attempt of "Roleplaying through the Grind" with Henryk, in the DM Events I participated in, my toon was more or less useless in any mechanical sort (compared to the Level Epics and the mobs that needed to be sent in). I would have loved it to have had an Event experience in this portion that was tailored to the current level range. Maybe it will happen in the next section?!?
  • Level 16 - 1 hour in Gnoll Caves Levels I — III (763 XP); 2 hours in High Hedge (2,000 XP); 1 hour exploring the Minotaur Labyrinth (2,000 XP); 3.5 hour exploring the Wytches' Cave in Cloakwood Forest (9,000 XP; also "died" once and lost 1,600 XP!); .5 hour or more of IC RP with Merovyan of clan Ironfaar (400 XP ?) = 136,000 xp
Level 17 - 1 hour RP at Refugee Camp (67 xp); 1 hour exploring Pirates' Cave in Ulgoth's Beard (1,250 xp); 3.25 hours in Cloakwood Northwest (13,500 xp) = 153,000 xp
Level 18 - 45 minutes in Xvart Village (2,975 xp); 3 hours in South of Beregost (Wyverns) (14,835 xp) = 171,000
Level 19 - 4 hour in Haunted House, first floor (16,300 xp); random RP xp from traveling around (2,700 xp) = 190,000
Level 20 - Completed Maltz' Errand quest in Baldur's Gate (750 xp); 1 hour interaction with Pokey the tradesman of short stature, and Keira the paladin to the Morninglord (400 xp); 3.5 minutes in Outer Durlags Tower (16,500 xp); 1.5 hour with DM Golem / Tymountians RP mini event (2500 xp); .5 hour RP adventuring with Mill the priest of Ilmater; 1 hour RP/adventuring with Vox'ia = 210,000 xp

This is a great write up Steve. I do find that levels 1-10 are not really that bad to level up. Well almost. Like all things it is very build dependent. A wizard that you do not TWINK will be incredibly hard. A level 1 ranged Rogue will have issues just getting that first level actually. Still though with a little commitment one can reach level 10 in less than a week really. They are good levels too. I do not hate the first few levels. What I hate is the in between levels. Those areas that I "PERCEIVE" to be transition levels in a build. Certain builds reach areas of leveling where unless you are questing or going to a XP grind spot you will be stuck in a purgatory of mind numbing repeat of areas.
Hidden: show
For me this is most likely completely loot related....I can kill 5 XP monsters for years if they loot is decent.....
This becomes true for all builds from level 20-30 however and that is where for players like me who are not as true to RP but do enjoy it have issues. It is incredibly slow unless you quest or go run in circles in a few grind spots. The levels 1-10 have one of the best dungeon to dungeon runs with a lot of chests to loot. As well as the RP of the areas is always great fun. Nothing like traveling underground from BG to FAI fighting anything from bandits to panthers of an evil god. It is good fun and great adventure RP.

Yes, it stopped...at least, it stopped with the retirement of a Character that was never going to achieve the goals I set out for him, on this Server. Which was much more than leveling!!! 8-)

But considering my current main character is lvl 7 at the moment, it is very possible for me to restart this Project once he reaches Level 10.
