Opposing Bluff
When people make a bluff roll, even though they are generally just showing off rather than creating a DC (and creating and opposing DCs should always be the objective of role playing dice) what is to be made as an opposed roll to bluff? My first thought is will save, but naturally, those values are skewed and misproportionate given the difference in progression for skills and saves. Diplomacy makes a little bit of sense, but not really. It also makes some sense to oppose a bluff check with another bluff check, but not really. Concentration makes a very small amount of sense, given that in the context of the skill, it is really a combative thing (as it is modified by Constitution). Finally, a Wisdom or Intelligence roll seems to make the most sense, but naturally ability scores arn't meant to oppose skills because of the difference in the values. So what do I do when someone shows off their bluff skill and thinks they can flat out lie to me?

Re: Opposing Bluff
There are several answers and opinions waiting for approval at this point. Knowing from experience that this topic can become pretty hot pretty fast i will solely wait for the DM-team to post a reply. If there's need to start a discussion about this, and i can't shake off the feeling there is - there always will be
, feel free to do so in the appropriate forums.
P.S: Here is a link to an older thread about a similar topic, if not the same.

Re: Opposing Bluff
Yes, that thread pretty much confirmed what I knew already. There isn't a good existing counter for bluff... and dice don't are most often abused or used poorly at best. Given the Neverwinter Nights PW set-up, I don't think anyone should be rolling dice without the supervision of a DM who is assigning and overseeing DCs. If dice are to be used, I really don't think bluff checks should be made until an agreeable counter is thought up with. I especially liked in that thread you pointed out, Ri762, when the orc used his Strength roll to bust out of ropes that he didn't even make the DC on because he is poorly informed. (not that anyone should be expected to be fully learned on the wordly DCs of Faerun, its silly...) Anyway, if anyone has something to add, please do. *hopes this reply gets approved at all*
