RP Learning of Skills/Feats

Unread post by Ambaryerno »

I was just curious what the position on this would be:

Currently, characters can learn languages beyond what their intelligence otherwise allows them by RPing that they're learning that language with another character who already knows it.

What would be the position on taking this same concept and applying it to Skills and Feats beyond what leveling up allows, and what is available to their class?

For example:

My main character is a Fighter\Longsword Weapon Master. Let's say a pure L30 Bard decides that, for whatever reason, he wishes he was more skilled in the use of the longsword than his level and class now allows and comes to my character to learn (we'll also pretend Aleric actually gives a damn, or that the Bard is willing to offer a substantial payment because he REALLY wants to learn).

The Bard already has the necessary proficiency to use a Longsword, but he never took Weapon Focus because he was putting all his feats into Bard-ish things. So we start the RP. After some time working on some more advanced techniques, the DM decides that the Bard has begun to grasp these concepts, and awards him Greater Weapon Focus.

Obviously I'm sure there would be some restrictions to what could be taught (IE, obviously my character would need to have the feat FIRST in order to teach another character, and I'm sure PrC abilities--IE Ki Critical--would be disallowed) but you get the gist.

The same thing could be applied to skills, particularly cross-class skills that a character ordinarily wouldn't take because of the cost.

Just curious what the perspective on this would be.

Right now, we have no way to add feats or skills IG.

The "givefeat" command through debug mode doesn't work in persistent worlds (in case you were wondering).

It's not a bad idea though.

Frontier has another system where once you hit the level cap you could trade in xp for feats through a scripted GUI system.
I don't think that is a bad idea either.
Although their level cap was 8. :o

Frontier is another NWN2 PW, right?

So that means that there IS a means of doing something similar to what I've suggested, if not through direct action by a DM. It would really be a matter of starting with the Frontier system, and adding a means of controlling what feats would be available to take after whatever RP requirements decided by the DM are met.
