The Theater

News spreads quickly that a theatre is being built in the Palace district of Baldur's Gate. The Iron Throne has been hired (rumor has it by Selis Vhaire) to see to the task force and obtaining of materials for construction. Though they use mostly local materials, they have also been bringing caravans of goods from the south, assumed to be from Calimshan, as well.

The citizens of Baldur's Gate eagerly await the completion of the theatre. Surely the new attraction will bring new visitors to the city and result in more sales for the local merchants.

The minstrel and merchant known as Selis Vhaire will smile and nod if asked about her involvement in the project. "Since my arrival here, it has been one of my goals to see a proper theater built in Baldur's Gate. I even had the help of my fiancé, Zein Milu, in gathering names of supporters. I am eagerly awaiting the results - although not so much the bill!" The young woman then chuckles at her latter comment and offers a bright smile.

Selis Vhaire receives a letter, hand-delivered by a youth in an obviously-new suit of finer clothing. As the young boy tugs at the neck of the new tunic and squirms uncomfortably, seemingly irritated by its confines, he explains:

“This here be from my benefactor, Valenthel Wyndsoul. He has asked that I wait for a reply, if’n ye got one?”

As the scroll is of good quality and is sealed with purple wax with a ‘W’ imprint:

Ms Vhaire,

It is with great pleasure that I have finally located you. It has been brought to my attention, through a bit of asking, that you are the prime catalyst behind the recent construction of the theater in the Palace District. This new home of entertainment will surely be a boon to the city and her people, and is something that I eagerly await. I understand that the costs of such an endeavor may be extreme and thus would like to offer my assistance in ensuring that costs alone do not delay its opening. If I can be of assistance, please leave word with my messenger, or seek me at the Blade and Stars.

With Great Respect,
Valenthel Wyndsoul

From time to time, Berel Greenwillow is seen also assisting, using his common sense and strength to help the construction of the western wall. As he seems to do anywhere, he quickly became a part-time leader, directing the men to coordinate their work more efficiently. Whenever Selis passes by the theatre's building site at the same time he is there, he's always more than happy to stop for a few moments, greeting her in his usual way.

"Good day, Miss Vhaire."

After which he gives a good report of the construction's progress to a very eager and excited woman.

Rumors circulate in Baldur's Gate, as they always have.

Rumors of a strange benefactor.

Rumors of one who is donating thousands and thousands of gold pieces to the theatre project. These massive donations rival those of the Iron Throne itself, and may quickly surpass them.

Rumors speak of massive sums of gold being delivered with a simple note attached:

"A worthy cause, my dear Miss Vhaire.

~ S.o.t.A."

Hundreds of speculations arise to match the given acronym...but who can say which one...if any...is correct?

Oddly enough, after these new donations started pouring in, the construction of the theatre suffered a massive setback when several faulty beams were used to support the roof. Workers are positive that all materials were thoroughly inspected before use, so rumor spreads that it may have been intentional, though by whom, nobody knows.

Over thirty workmen were injured in the collapse of a portion of the nearly-complete ceiling, and a dozen were killed as well. Those injured would rapidly transported to the Temple of Ilmater, where they were tended by the followers of the Crying God.

New workers are currently being recruited to replace those lost in the unfortunate incident.

Shortly after her return to the area, Selis Vhaire is informed of both the donations that have helped fund the theater project as well as the accident that occurred.

"Who is this S.o.t.A. person?" she wonders aloud as the note finally makes its way into her hands. "And what does he or she want in exchange for this generosity?"

The young woman then puts her inquisitive nature to work as she tries to determine the origins of the donations and the apparent sabotage that took place.

More donations continue to arrive under the strange acronym. No holds have been barred in the generosity of the giver. Sacks of gold totalling tens of thousands of gold pieces come (literally) in a wagonload, with no sign of a deliverer or guard. The money is simply there for Selis Vhaire, undisturbed.

After ensuring that the donations are secured, the busy young woman tacks a note near the construction site and asks that it be left undisturbed for a few days.

A small note is placed beneath that one, but a day later. It is written on faded gray paper in expensive black ink. The handwriting is cultured, practiced, and flourishing, with swift, sharp marks on the i's and t's.

"Miss Vhaire,

I would be pleased to make your acquaintance. There is no need to arrange any cordial appointment. I will find you when the time is right. I truly must laugh at myself--I sound so terribly ominous! Never fear.

Never fear.

Selis Vhaire found herself watching the construction workers as they continued laboring towards the theater's completion. The structure itself was slowly but surely taking form, and she had reviewed the plans in her hands yet again to ensure that work was progressing as intended.

I sound so terribly ominous!

A frown creased her forehead as she recalled the recent events that threatened to steal her dream, but a look of stubborn determination soon adorned her features instead.

Never fear.

"No more anonymous donations are to be accepted," she instructed the construction workers before she departed. "Anyone wishing to make a donation can either meet with me personally, or their generosity will be politely declined."

*Upon hearing about Selis' troubles with the theater from Valerius, Jonas writes his minstrel friend a letter. It is sealed in wax with the phoenix crest of house Rokranon.*

Dear Selis,

I have heard of your problems with a mysterious benefactor, and wanted to remind you of my offer for aid. I have notified the bank of Baldur's Gate that you are to be considered my family for use of the gold in my vault. You have free access to whatever funding you may need. All you will be required to do is come by Istari and get an item of mine which will grant you access when shown to the employees at the bank. You can come get said item when you first visit your new niece.

I am placing a great deal of trust in you with this, but I have complete faith that you will not let me down. Take care, dear sister.

Sincerely,

Sir Jonas Rokranon
