Deror Lundy

Unread post by Sir_Carnifex »

Deror Lundy grew up in the small fishing village of Ulgoth's Beard, not far from Baldur's Gate. From his earliest years, his father taught him his trade of a fisherman, often taking him out in their small boat in calmer weather. Deror enjoyed this immensely, all the while rapidly learning how to sail the small boat with ease. Years passed and the young lad grew bored with the everyday life that he was leading. What he longed for was adventure - sailing on the seas in a great vessel, perhaps even a warship.

One year Deror was sent to Baldur's Gate to restock supplies. As he strolled along the wharf, he gazed at the long row of gently bobbing ships moored to the docks. These were what he wanted to work on, not some dinghy just a short distance offshore. The eager lad, forgetting his task, inquired into hiring on as a deckhand on one of the vessels and the friendly captain readily accepted him. It was not long before the young sailor became adept at the workings of the rigging and steering the large ship. The captain made a good choice in hiring him.

The years passed swiftly by uneventfully until the old captain died. The ship was sold and most of the crew broke up. Deror - who was at middle age himself by this time - was one of the few kept on by the new owner. However, trade was no longer a priority and the captain turned the use of his ship to the practice of slaverunning and pirating. Deror reveled in the feeling of power he had over those they crushed and enthusiastically worked his new job. Nothing pleased him more than to lay low his opponents with his cutlass and dagger.

The crusty captain would occasionally turn his ship to trading and transporting passengers when pirate hunters were said to be about. During this time, the ship picked up a few people at Waterdeep en route to Baldur's Gate. They were mostly commoners, but one of them caught Deror's eye. The person was a richly-dressed young man with bright red hair. Deror wondered what such a man was doing on a filthy old ship - for it had become that recently. His curiosity soon waned as he found the fastidious man to be a constant source of complaints. He wished that this had been one of their slaving trips and not a simple passenger voyage.

They reached the city and the passengers disembarked. The crew was given a week off while the ship was refitted. This week in port Deror spent drinking in the local taverns. It was not his fortune, however, to return to his life as a pirate. His return to the docks was met with the sight of a scuttled ship and his captain being led away in chains. It did not take him much time to decide that it was time to start a new profession - perhaps adventuring on land. But all that could wait until he lounged for a couple of months spending his ill-gotten gains.
