Cognos' new apprentice was eager to learn. He sensed the power in this young man with the stark white hair. As always, before beginning his teachings with a new apprentice, the master would instill upon his student, that their powers should never be used lightly. This lesson is most important, as most students are quite eager. The boy could already cast all of his cantrips, and without a single lesson. Cognos could already see the boy did not like fire, and made up his mind there and then, he would never ask it of his student to cast fire spells. After instilling in the boy proper respect of the Weave, he told him of all the 1st circle spells. One by one, he spoke of their name, and what they did. Now, the boy was ready to take his first step.

Cognos, "Today, I shall teach you to further your connection with the Weave. The Weave is as a river, and you have but touched the surface with the palm of your hand. That is where the cantrips lie, on the surface. You must deepen your connection to her, press your hand beneath the surface, to the strands in the first layer of the Weave. This is where you will find 1st circle spells. Wizards do this by study, using learned incantations and hand gestures. Clerics and druids do this by faith. Spirit shamans by using their connection to spirits, and through them, the Weave. As sorcerors, we do it by feel, by our connection to the Weave itself, by our borne talents. It is rumored that this gift may be due to just a hint of dragon's blood in our veins. Now, I need you to concentrate. Feel your connection to the Weave. Can you feel it?"

Bjorn, "Yes Master."

Cognos, "Good. Now, gently, press your hand beneath the surface. Can you feel it?"

Bjorn smiling, "Yes Master."

Cognos, "Good. Now, slowly move your hand about. Do you feel the spells available there to use?"

Bjorn in awe, "Yes Master."

Cognos, "Good. Now, what is the spell closest to you? What do you feel?"

Bjorn, ponders a moment, then answers, "Shield, Master."

Cognos smiles, "Good. Warding oneself, in protection, is very useful, and important. Now, feel the spell, what it is called, how it functions. Can you feel it?"

Bjorn concentrating, replies, "Yes Master."

Cognos serious now, replies, "Good. Now, cast this ward upon yourself."

Bjorn casts the 1st circle spell Shield upon himself flawlessly."

Cognos smiles again, "Good. Now, open your eyes, and behold what you have done."

Bjorn opens his eyes, and feels the spell upon him, and sees the spell upon him, and smiles proudly.

Cognos, still smiling, speaks to the boy, as a teacher does, and as he speaks, his smile fades, and his look grows serious once more, "Good. You have done well my apprentice. You have taken your first step down your own path. Remember, the deeper you feel into the Weave, the higher circle spells will be available to you. There are 9 circles in total. The higher the circle, the more powerful, the more useful, and, the more dangerous. You must promise me, you will not feel farther than 1st circle yet."

Bjorn inclines his head to his master, "I promise, Master Greycloak."

Cognos inclines his head to his student, before waving his hand and dispelling the boy, "Now. Our lesson for the day is done. I need you to pick up some items for me. I have this list here."

Cognos hands the list to the boy and sends him on his way. He then sits, and ponders his student, who did not fail in casting his first spell of the 1st circle, as many apprentices do.

Bjorn Frostbeard awakens in bed, in his room at the inn. He smiles to himself of the dream from which he has just awoken. He speaks aloud, to no one but himself, "Memories and knowledge return."
