Bag of holding question.

Unread post by Randall »

I know that the law is: RP what is on your character sheet.

Though, when I look in my 4 backpacks and see 8 full plates, 3 leather outfits, 10 different kind of weapons, 200 healing kits, 20 wands, 100 000 gold pieces, a green alien orb (huh? :D), and hells, a lot more things, I'm wondering.

Is it wrong to RP having a bag of holding, or does it make no sense? Because between carrying what I stated up here and having one, I know which one makes more sense rp-wise.

Thankies. (;

He just wants to be able to pretend he has a bag.

Bags cause a lot of lag though, don't they? If that is no longer an issue, I would love a bag (or ten)!

No no, just to RP having one. I know bags of holding create lag. But I was wondering if it was allowed to RP having one, to explain that we can carry so many items at the same time, since it's a bit... wierd, rp-wise.

This is why Rhys uses a Backpack....he also has the abilty to shrink objects for more room.

Shrink Item
Transmutation
Level: Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, S
Casting time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: One touched object of up to 2 cu. ft./level
Duration: One day/level; see text
Saving Throw: Will negates (object)
Spell Resistance: Yes (object)

You are able to shrink one nonmagical item (if it is within the size limit) to 1/16 of its normal size in each dimension (to about 1/4,000 the original volume and mass). This change effectively reduces the object’s size by four categories. Optionally, you can also change its now shrunken composition to a clothlike one. Objects changed by a shrink item spell can be returned to normal composition and size merely by tossing them onto any solid surface or by a word of command from the original caster. Even a burning fire and its fuel can be shrunk by this spell. Restoring the shrunken object to its normal size and composition ends the spell.

As far as I know you can RP having a bag of holding, or a Havard's Handy Haversack. Trying to make sense of the way the game lets you carry items isn't the same thing as playing an aasimar character and trying to RP it as a half-elf. Or saying you have wings. That's more the stuff we're looking at when we say RP what is on your character sheet.

As a player I personally RP having such a bag myself, because yes hauling around 8 full plates in your normal adventuring backpack is just silly.

We don't tell you not to RP having anything. You can RP anything reasonable. Got a big scar on your face? We don't fit it in mechanically, but we let you do it, right? Of course we acknowledge some people RP having magic bags that they put their things in. I mean - it wouldn't make sense that you can hold eight full plates in your back pocket, eh?

Rhys reply makes me raise the question of RPing "invalild" spells and abbilities?

I mean, that spell is not in the module and theres lots of other PnP spells and abbilities that arent. Where do we draw the line as to what people have access to?

Rules state play your character sheet, I assume that goes for spellbooks too. Or am I mistaken?

He isn't Roleplaying Wish...so...whatever, I don't care about little ultimately worthless spells like that. Those are more convenience then anything else.

Should get DM permission before using spells that aren't in spellbooks. In general, the utility-type spells like Rhys is talking about with Shrink Item will probably be okay, but better to make sure. I've had players use this spell twice in events in just the past week.

So if someone casts mords on you, your backpack should basically explode?

Isnt the reason why we dont have bags of holding, due to the size char files could become. So it isnt about what is or isn't in-game. But about the game running better.
