Background: Frumpkin is the oldest of three brothers; Gorge, being the next in the lineage, and Drell, being the youngest. All three brothers hail from the Firebeard Clan. The Firebeards are known for typically dwarven traits; stubbornness, loyalty, family, and honor are their trademark. They lead regimented and nearly militaristic lifestyle and see the world as the enemies of their race and they must defend their way of life.
The Year of Thunder blessed most dwarven houses with a plethora of offspring that rivaled the birth rate of humans, but through some plight on their house, the Firebeards maintained their abysmally low birth rate that is common among dwarves. This made their disposition even more ponderous and they retreated further into their immediate family and began to reject other dwarven houses out of jealousy. The Firebeard brothers; Frumpkin, Gorge, and Drell, were the exception. Each of them was blessed with a wife and a child. This was an incredible boon in a society where females are so uncommon. They all lived in the same household together and maintained it as one immediate family, each brother and their wife treating their sons and daughters as if they were their own. It seemed life as a dwarf couldn't be more blessed.
Then the horde came... For reasons unknown, orcs began to attack the city frequently and with greater intensity during successive battles. The Firebeard brothers were quick to their duty and defended their city, but this left their wives and children undefended in their home which skirted the outside of the city. A battle ensued that would scar the honor of all three brothers for life. The horde attacked with numbers too great to hold the line. Even the stubborn dwarves were pushed aside as a tsunami of orcs poured through their line and began to ravage the dwarven city. The Firebeard home was one of the first to be ransacked. Though they fought through the fray, the brothers were too late. They arrived to find their wives and children were all slaughtered in their home. Despite their previous blessings, the curse of the Firebeards had found their way into the brother's home.
A sadness too deep for words to describe settled upon their shoulders. The orcs were beaten back, but to the Firebeards it was all for naught. Their honor and lineage destroyed, the brothers silently made their way to the surface and dispersed. They shed their armor and headed into the unknown with shame. Drell ran off into the woods alone. Gorge and Frumpkin were too resigned to stop him.
Gorge and Frumpkin remained together, and made their way to Baldur's Gate. There they met Starkand, the leader of the Slayer clan. He gave them an opportunity to regain their honor. They shaved their heads into a mohawk which they greased with pig grease and slathered themselves in oil. They armed themselves with dwarven waraxes and set upon their task. Starkand gave them the oath...
"I am a dwarf, my honor is my life and without it I am nothing. I shall become a Slayer, I shall seek redemption in the eyes of my ancestors. I shall become as death to my enemies until I face he that takes my life and my shame."
Their fates bound together, it was of course a matter of time before Drell joined them. He simply wandered out of the forest with a massive pig in tow (perhaps because of his smell) and embraced his brothers as if it were only yesterday they had parted. The brothers administered the oath to Drell and they continue their quest to restore their honor together.Goals:
Frumpkin and his brothers seek to regain their honor through glorious battle! They accomplish this by training as hard as they can with their chosen weapons and becoming as fearsome as possible in battle. Their suicidal tendencies seem insane to the average fighter, but it grants them a paradoxical invulnerable quality. This is not to be confused with stupidity. Throwing their life away in a battle they have no chance of winning carries no honor for them. They will not fight a hopeless battle unless they know they will be granted great honor by doing so. That includes taking down as many enemies as possible and hopefully in some grand effort to benefit their dwarven brethren.
In an interesting twist, the Firebeard brothers seem determined to outdo each other. When one falls in battle the brothers become enraged with jealousy because they want their honor to be restored at the same time. It's as if they won't restore their honor unless they all die in some glorious battle together. For this reason the brothers take great efforts to revive their fallen brothers.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc. Facts:
I love playing a Slayer and would love it if the brothers could eventually die together in some glorious fashion. Perhaps some great threat to their brethren, the Ironfaar is how they end their miserable lives. But not yet. Not until the Firebeards have wetted their thirst for blood and harrassed every haughty elf in Baldur's Gate.
