Background:
Kalyn stems from two Half-Elf parents; her father Andros was a former Ranger and her mother Elen a Commoner farmwife. She also has a younger Human sister named Helen, destined to become a farmwife as well. Her family lives on the outskirts of Essembra in Cormanthor.
Andros initially wanted a son so unlike her sister he trained Kalyn in marksmanship, tracking, skinning and trapping. Kalyn did get some time off, however, to play with her sister and their cat Silas. This continued until Kalyn's mother was killed by a snake on Kalyn's 30th season.
Ten seasons later her father and sister had developed feelings for each other; Kalyn's now older Human sister Helen effectively replaced her Half-Elf mother. This became too much for Kalyn so she journeyed east to become a Monk of the Yellow Rose high in the Earthspur Mountains.
Ten more seasons passed with meditation, medical and martial training, but her father and sister's relationship still plagued Kalyn; she had almost never visited them during her time at the monastery. Eventually she requested transfer to Baldur's Gate to get farther away from home.
During the caravan trip westward Kalyn started keeping a journal of some of her recent exploits, mainly to have someone or something to talk to as a way of dealing with her solitude and separation from her family.

Motivation: Overcoming her self-perceived flaws and being accepted by all her peers
Life's Goal: Protecting and treating as many victims as possible
Long-term: Reconciling with or stopping her father and sister's relationship
