Mason Hornblower (the Dread Privateer)

Unread post by Dr.Whodat »

Name: Mason Hornblower

Appearance: Hard to miss his sailor roots. Worn and weather beaten cloths, most often associated with mariners. Possibly hansom but in an unkempt way that shows little concern for vanity.
Race: Human
Age: Middle age (35-45)or just very weather beaten and sun dried.
Height: tall for a human but not uncommonly so. (6'2")
Weight: Trim but not thin (200 lbs)
Eyes & Hair: hair and eyes are a sort of flat dark gray. a short beard grows between rare shaves.

Personality Profile:
General Health: Years of poor nutrition at sea and serveral bouts with scervy has limited his night vission. Faint lash scars indicative of "high seas" discipline. No deep or debilitating wounds.
Deities: He feels some affection for Garagos as they seem to have the same tastes (treasure and the power to get it) but huge gaps in religion lore suggests he has no formal learning on the matter.
Initial Alignment: TN. Though not mean spirited by nature, he believes the only law is to stay alive. The only morality to come out ahead.
Profession: Merchant sailor/Privateer. depending on what's paying the most.
Base Class & Proposed Development: Swashbuckler/Bard (songs and lore of the sea are greatly valued on long voyages)/Dread Pirate/Tempest.
Habits/Hobbies: Quick to laugh or tell a joke. Though his humor is a bit dark for the more gentle hearted folks.
He is often found singing some sort of inspirational song to bolster his courage when he feels it is needed. These songs most commonly refer to ships, sailors or the sea in one way or another.
Languages: Common and a passable Orc. (picked up over so much time spent with unsavory characters)
Weapon of Choice: A rapier and whatever is within reach.

Background: He remembers little to nothing before the ships. from a very young age Mason was a sailor. It was a bitter upbringing but eventually became the only life he could imagin. After finally finding what felt like a real home on the Wondering maiden. He advanced to third pilot, and fith in line for command in a crew of 23.
Rading whatever ships or port villages they suspected of harbering pirates or smuglers. Without the encombrance of any real court system to answer to. those were profitable and suprisingly easy years. The maiden's Captain Alister, offten hid the crew's bounty. Thus keeping the crew from regretfull spending and no doubt keeping them needy and willing to obay his orders in hope of some recovery of their promised loot. Yet as all good things tend to do, those days ended abruptly.
The Wondering maiden was disabled in a skirmish with the much heavier pirate schooner The Yardarm Naught. The maiden escaped capture but not the cruel irony of Umberlee. The stricken ship was taking on water. In its first bad weather all hope of a safe haven ended. As for the crew, Mason can only assume all hands were lost. The vessel itself broke apart at sea. He was alone on the beaches of Roaringshore with nothing but the wet rags he wore and the one thousand gold pieces he didn't let go of. Even when he fell unconscious.

Goals: To either destroy or capture the pirate schooner The Yardarm Naught. Last led by the half/orc Captain Horatio. Until then he's content to begin acquiring the skills and fortune to exact his revenge and become the captain of his own crew.

Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
- Possible reunions with crew members or members of the pirate ship, could lead to information on the "yardarm's" whereabouts or the fate of it's captain.
- Mason has no moral aversion to joining a pirate crew to obtain clues resources or Confederates to help him in his purpose.
- Any adventure aboard ship would be fun.

about me: i've dabled in D&D since i was a kid in the 80's. Played NWN2 campains to death and then learned about a year ago that i could play it online. So....
im new to RP. this is the first forum ive been on and the first profile ive made. i think i read all the rules and as far as i can tell i did it right. but if i missed something i'm glad to learn, please let me know.
This charactor seems fun, playable and i think has a story that could be fun for others to get to know as well.

I dont know how to make a signature but this is what it would be;
the greatest swordsman need not fear the second greatest swordsman, but the rank amiture. author unknown.
