Construction of the Whistling wanderer

The Whistling Wanderer

Image
The Whistling Wanderer is the dream of every sailor, a quick and sturdy ship. Months and years of savings, time and pain, now the time to try and build that ship has come for Mealir Ostirel.

// Thread to relate the construction of the ship and the RP around it. It will also be used to prepare meetings.

Part one : finding men

An except of Mealir Ostirel's diary

"With that last sale I have enough gold to afford the ship of my dreams. With the help of Graendal it might be one of the finest ships of the Sword Coast. Starting tomorrow I'll look for people to help me build that ship, I'll need craftsmen and sailors, I'll put some posters on the Trade Way. Gold will sparkle the interest of many, I'm sure they will come and look for me."

Sailors needed
You're a sailor without a boat ?
You've heard the call of the sea ?
I need you !

A new ship will be built shortly in Roaringshore. First come, first served, places of officers can be found for experienced sailors and able people ! Craftmen are welcomed and will be involved in the building of the finest ship of the Coast.

If you're interested, find me, Mealir Ostirel, at the docks of Roaringshore and near the Friendly Arms Inn.

P.S. If you're outlawed in Baldur's Gate you're not needed.
Another except

"One week was enough to find a good number of men, I didn't expect that. The meeting at the Blade and Stars Inn was a success, trading, exploring, being paid. The goals are simple enough, I should make a list of those who were interested.

Zachariah Delmar
Max de Roguespierre
Graendal
Rain
Leo
Dudion Shapes
Dorna Runehammer
Zair
Yastan Galley
Jannia Jaddam
Misara
Hakurei Sky
Arisihel

You can see the list was modified several times already

2000 gold a week for an officer, 1500 for a sailor, a part of the benefits. I believe this is quite generous.

Tamina, Krisaga and even that woman, Lilah, came to the meeting. Let's hope that Kalma the bloody fool won't mess with the construction now that I stated I don't want to have nything to do with him.

I should worry about the ship, the masts .. I need good masts.

Part two : the masts

Another except

"I managed to talk to that elven ranger, part of the Green Enclave, and asked him if I could harvest some trees in Cloakwood for the masts.

Not only did he agree but he also offered his help, I'll meet him again in a few days."

[...]

"Great news, the ranger found some leafless trees and the druids blessed them, he markd them with a red cross. It should be relatively easy to find them. I'll gather a few men and harvest."

[...]

"Horrible weather, I couldn't predict that, the harvest will be delayed."

[...]

"Finally ! I managed to gather a few men, some adventurers who stumbled upon me next to the Gnoll's cave also helped me (for gold). The harvest was a success, the inhabitants of the Cloakwood were as agressive as usual but there were no casualties on our side.

These trees are truely blessed, they look normal but they are more flexible and durable than any wood I've ever worked with. A very good thing, I'll have to thank the Green Enclave again."

[...]

"The masts were waiting to be used in RoaringShore but after the bloody mess I witnessed I decided to send them to Baldur's Gate. I'm afraid there's not much to save from RoaringShore now, Kalma and his men, especially that wizard, are turning it into an evil place. Curse them all."

Part three : magical wards and figurehead

Another except

"I talked with Shirtza about the masts, I asked her if she could ward them permanently against fire. It seems she can, in fact she offered me to ward the entire ship against several dangers, I'm afraid it will cost her much but I'll take what she offers of her own will.

She needs large quantities of ink and the help of a craftsman, I'll talk to Dorna as soon as possible. As for ink, I'm sure Wendel and Candlekeep can give me the names of their providers. If they can create an ink able to resist the elements that is, tar will do otherwise I hope.

Zachariah, a follower of Selune and one of the men I hired wants to take care of the figurehead. A figurehead representing Selune ! How can I refuse ? It seems Elycia showed some interest for that carving, i'm ready to give them enough gold to do it.

Part four : ship business

Another except

"I'll need to meet some merchants as soon as possible. Miss Jannia Jaddam almost drowned me under figures and managed to convince me I needed to take care of this part.

To be honest I was really careless, luckily she seems very capable, I'll let her find a time and day to meet those merchants. No trade, no gold. No gold ? No sailors and no exploration, a nightmare.

When I meet her I'll have to ask her to buy gems, the merchants around here are mere thieves and many countries are in need of gems, an opportunity can come and I'd like to find something to train the people I hired, too many of them are inexperienced in sailing."

Part five : the first real steps

Another except

"After a few days I was able to meet a shipmaker in Baldur's Gate. We discussed about the ship, its purpose, qualities, size, the number of men ... and finally I followed his advice. The guy seemed to be a passionate and an expert.

Just from my needs and the purposes of the ship he proposed a two-masted frigate. I thought about something larger but he was convincing, I gave him a part of the payment, the ship will begin to take shape in a few weeks now. It's as expensive as planned, 480 000 gold coins in total, but it's worth it.

And with a reduced crew, 60-70 sailors instead of the 90 that I planned, the costs will be lowered."

[quote="Valefort"]Part three : magical wards and figurehead

The Figurehead

" Regarding the Figurehead, I, Zachariah Delmar can asure that the ongoing of this is in a good pace. Few days ago i talked to a very nice miss; Elycia in the Fire of FAI, and we decided that she will work on a scratch model and show me. If I approve it (and of course, my captain Mealir also), she will start working on the Real Model. She will need a big peace of wood for this, and of course the blessings for this wood The Silvermoon will provide, making it a holy Figurehead, I know that because She made it clear to me already.

I do not know exactly the size of this Figurehead, but i know that it will be a 2 masts Ship, so, not so big as i was first told. The size information that i gave to miss Elycia when she asked me about it, was more or less the Size of a 1 Horse weagon (just like those ones the small merchants use to carry their merchandise, frequently seen along the trade way).

I will ask my captain to prepare a group of workers to harverst for this peace of wood, seems like The Sharped Teeth woods is the right place, but those werewolves made my day really hard even when I just went there to explore the area, or maybe i am wrong? I am not a specilaist in wood after all, but indeed, it has to be decided and done soon.

She; Miss Elycia, was expecting something smaller, but, how could it be smaller? It is a figurehead for a ship, I suppose it will be somewhere in the ship for the creatures and people outside it know that The Silvermoon, my Almighty Godess Selûne is taking care of that crew, hopefully in the front of the deck, this is still to be decided by Mealir, my captain."

A drafting sheet wrapped in oilskin is sent via courier to Mealir. It comes bearing the wax seal of Candlekeep.

Mealir receives the letter at the Blades and Stars Inn. Unrolling the sheet on his thigh with one hand while sipping an ale he chokes and spill half of it on the table.

Putting down the mug he goes into his room to read the parchment carefully, staring at the sketch in disbelief.

A few minutes later he cmoes back in the main room and looks for someone to send a letter at Candlekeep.

"Elycia,

The sketch is truely wonderful, you're gifted. I can't wait to see it done and will see to it shortly. I will show it to Zachariah but I have no doubt it will please him !

Part six : the figurehead

Another except

"Zachariah, taking care of the figurehead lead a small group consisting of him, Hoihe Dalcino, Laitae Lafreth, Misara and me in the depths of Cloakwood to find a suitable oak. After some time, guided by Selune, he picked one and we begin to cut it down. The spiders and the treants proved quite dangerous for Laitae and Hoihe but no one died, though they suffered some injuries and poisoning.
Still we managed to cut it down, then with the help of some potions and spells to enlarge Zach and me we carried it to Candlekeep where I rewarded those who helped.

We didn't have to wait for long until miss Elycia showed up, on her request we moved the trunk to her quarters where she will be able to carve the figurehead. With that being done we discussed the price and the time it will take her to do it, it was more than fair : 20 000 gold now and another 20 000 gold coins when it is finished, in 2 months. I gave her one of my most prized gem, a star sapphire, so that the figurehead holds it in its hands.

She also asked for some materials, silver for the face and a few other things I noted somewhere else. When it's done I'm afraid Zach will have to sleep next to the figurehead to keep it intact ! Despite her beauty, or because of it, some people will probably try to destroy it or simply rob the gem."

One letter arrives with the ZD stamp (Personal Zachariah Delmar's stamp) plus one addendum showing it is from a member of the Whistling Wanderer's crew addressed to: "miss Elycia from Candlekeep"
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear miss Elycia,
I would like to inform you that i already have the items that you need to start the construction of the Wonderfull Silvermoon Selûne'S Figurehead for the Whistling Wanderer.

I take this opportunity to let the miss know that I can not thank you enough for such great job! I am in debt with you and please, ask me anything you might need from me, and if it is in my reaching i will immediately do it.

Could we arrange one time so i can deliver personally the items to you at your atelier in Candlekeep, because in my concern, delicate and gentle hands such as yours should never be submitted to do such brute carring work, with all respect i would like you to let such work on me.

At your services with all my heart,
Zachariah Delmar

Hello sir captain Mealir,
I think that as the time flows, our crew is more and more consolidate and the time to show the world our presence came!

I know that the construction of our fabulous ship is going very well under the blessings of our benevolent and mercyfull Gods.

So, taking all of that as a fact i think that we should start to think about one badge, a glorius badge that will Rise in Faerûn as the symbol of our commitment and our strengh as a group... A crew fated to be Glorious, the Whistling Wandere's Badge!! This badge should be replicated in every crew member service clothes and items, so the other can at the very first momment know and tell that One from the Glorious crew is present.

I have not the needed gifts to design such a thing, but surely, someone has!

As well as we would need one Anthem, to sing in momments of Glory, momments of Sadness and Torments. And for this, my captain, i know you are just the perfect person...

With all my respect and subservience;
