Her story begins with an introductory note by the human translator, a farmer with a mild drinking addiction but nevertheless goes by as Brother Jakob, worshiper of Angharradh. He claims to have met a most peculiar elf named Avarie, Avarie Loth'lhaen. She narrated her story to him in flashbacks, often making continuous references to the time between her former career and the present.
Born Avarie Loth'lhaen in the poverty-stricken section of the Dock Ward in Water Deep on the coast of the Sword Coast, she is sold into a dancing school in the North Ward, the most prominent connoisseurs of fine art and leisure in all of Waterdeep when she was but nine years old. Her mother was dying of what she suspected to be a life draining curse and her father - wizened even in elven years also believed that death was coming. To Avarie's dismay, her older sister Ashae is not sold into the school with her. Determined to run away, Avarie remained in the school to begin training as a dancer, along with another young girl her age living in the same quarters whom she (and everyone else) has nicknamed Coconut. The school is run by three human women: the elderly and grumbling Granny, the money-obsessed Mother, and the school's mistress named Auntie, a lamed dancer who trained alongside Mother as her "sister" and the only one of the three who acted generally nice toward Avarie. It also housed just one other dancer - the malicious Tanisha, who was also one of the most popular dancers in the North Ward area. Everyone was willing to overlook her cruelty (in particular towards Avarie) because she served as the breadwinner for them, and Tanisha even used Avarie to her personal benefit, at one time blackmailing her by withholding her sister Ashae's whereabouts. She made Avarie swear her loyalty to her, letting her take the blame for a ruined silken dress and even accused her of stealing an enchanted brooch. These actions added to Avarie's debts considerably, on top of the fees paid for her acceptance into the school, her lessons, food and etcetera. This only strengthened Avarie's desire to leave, and she managed to find her sister, who had been sold as a dancer at South Ward in a den of ill repute, who was also desperate to run away. Days before her escape however, Mother learned (from Avarie) that Tanisha had been treating with a boyfriend in the school for some time now - something that is forbidden amongst the dancers of sterling repute - and the school's doors were locked at night as a consequence. Avarie decided to escape via the roof, but failed and ended up breaking her arm, as well as immediately ceasing to be a dancer-to-be for dishonoring her school, reducing her to become a maid.
A few years afterwards, Avarie, crying in the street, is noticed by a man who she afterwards would never forget, giving her his handkerchief and money to buy an exotic Calimshan coconut treat. Despite the coin being enough to facilitate her escape once and for all, she donated it to the shrine of Hanali Celanil, praying to become a dancer in the hopes of seeing him again. Several years passed since then and Coconut became a geisha on her own under Tanisha's tutelage, while Avarie remained a maid. However, she was unexpectedly taken on as a protégé by Yulia, the owner of the silken dress Tanisha previously made Avarie ruin and one of the very top dancers in all the Coast. Yulia persuaded Mother to reinvest in Avarie's training, and Avarie became the dancer Amallae, with Yulia as her "older sister" (mentor).
After she embarrassed Tanisha with a joke during an informal party, the latter used her influence to sabotage Avarie by spreading rumors and trailing her and Yulia from party to party. Yulia insisted that she needed to create a plan to keep Tanisha out forever lest Avarie's career ultimately die, and so arranged for her flower to be bid upon by several influential men, namely Lathuvan Nedor, the owner of a prominent caravan business at the time, and reputed Sune priest "Brother Fish", dubbed so by Avarie due to his appearance. From Avarie's point of view, the Business Partner of Lathuvan (The man who had been her inspiration to continue years ago) did not recognize her, but still treated her with kindness; and as he is Lathuvan's Business Partner with a relationship known across the Trade Way, he would never have bidded against him for her flower. Unfortunately Tanisha somehow learned that Yulia had something going on (Although Avarie herself was still unaware at this point of the plan) and ruined the image Brother Fish had of her. It took some amount of convincing from Yulia and Avarie's combined efforts to enlighten Brother Fish on that matter. Ultimately, he won the bid for Avarie's flower, paying an enormous amount of platinum that was more than enough to repay all of Avarie's debts to Mother. This led to the latter, who had already been considering adopting Coconut as her heiress, to adopt Avarie instead, ultimately destroying the two girls' friendship - Coconut was looking forward to the adoption so that she could have had some kind of security in her human old age. Tanisha, on the other hand, had started to spiral downward, she was no longer in favor and had been thrown out of the school.
Lathuvan on the other hand, bid to become Avarie's husband, but he would lose the bidding to a Merchant Captain. This, Mother believed, was because of the political climate at the time - Waterdeep was on the brink of a shadowy Trade War. When it did break out, tensions were too high for such frivolous entertainment and dancers all around were forced to relocate to other wards to find honest work. This was as good as a death sentence, for the only skill set dancers were trained with could only find work in areas that were known for making people disappear. Subsequently, the Merchant Captain had nearly lost his ship and did not have the influence to secure a safe life for Avarie. However, help unexpectedly arrived in the form of Lathuvan, who brought her back near the North Ward as a dress maker. Nevertheless, Avarie and those close to her endured a hard life of labor whilst the secret wars raged. At the end of it, Lathuvan visited Avarie and asked that she return to North Ward, which had become open to dancers once again, to entertain the new Lord of Amcathra, whose aid could have been instrumental in saving the merchant caravan Lathuvan and the kindly man ran, which was almost all but lost during the war.
Avarie, Yulia and Coconut entertained the Lord together regularly. Some time after, Lathuvan formally proposed to become Avarie's husband, leaving her in despair because this would have ended any hope of a relationship with his partner. On an expensive visit to the Shadowdale Avarie devised a plan to humiliate herself with the Lord in front of Lathuvan, who she was sure, would never forgive her for being with the Nobleman (whom Lathuvan despised despite his need of him). She arranged for Coconut to bring Lathuvan to a place where he would "stumble" on Avarie and the Amcathran Lord making love. However, Coconut still harbored deep resentment towards Avarie's adoption, and knew that she was all too fond of Lathuvan's business partner. She brought the Businessman to the theater instead of Lathuvan. Humiliated, Avarie believed that her dream of being with the kindly man had been lost forever, but afterwards, she received a letter to meet with the Nedor Trading Company. She was saddened as she anticipated meeting Lathuvan and to discuss his patronage, but was surprised when the man she loved showed up rather than Lathuvan Nedor. Avarie revealed that her acts in Shadowdale were for personal reasons. The Businessman, in turn, expands on his feelings of debt toward and friendship with Lathuvan, and how he was not able to take away the elfin woman his friend had shown so much interest in. When he had learned through Coconut that Avarie's intention was for Lathuvan to see her with the Nobleman, he decided to tell Lathuvan what he had seen. The latter refused to ever see Avarie again, therefore freeing the Businessman to advance. She and the Businessman kiss, Avarie's first kiss of true love.
Her story ended with Avarie recounting her subsequent life with her Husband as his wife, and her eventual retirement as a dancer. She never did freely admit that she had a son with her Husband, but spoke of traveling the world to avoid complications regarding the inheritance of the Nedor Trading Company. The story concluded with a reflection of her life thus far, shedding the name of Amallae and beginning to explore the world, a free elf.
Goals:
Explore the lands of the Sword Coast. Specifically, explore the people of the Sword Coast. Specificallier, explore the minds of the people of the Sword Coast. She wants to find a purpose in her new life, but she is in no rush to getting to that, finding extreme enjoyment in finding people's buttons.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
She has a half-elf son with the Businessman, whom she had set up to inherit the Nedor Trading Company. The elven wife Lathuvan had married years after getting over Avarie had agreed to raise the child as her own as she was made barren, a friendship that had lasted many years as both were known at their time as respectable dancers. Avarie had done her best to cut herself off from her son's life, ridding herself of her public name, leaving Waterdeep for travel and even changing her personality - but she was well known in her time and her past fame could come back to haunt her.
