Background: Adral Valanar is a curious character indeed. While he presents himself as a monk of the Old Order, he was never formally accepted into the order as a complete member because he never completed any of the official trials or rites. In fact, he has only been considering himself part of the Order for the better part of two years. so what did Adral Valanar do with his life before becoming a monk?
Hailing from a deep forest in the vale of the Delimbyr River, Adral Valanar grew up with two older brothers. All three of them lived in a small village of druids, and all three of them grew up within that practice. When Adral was around the age of 190, the three of them, unlike many wood elves of their generation, decided to leave the village for a few years to explore the world. Three brothers on the road and their animal companions, it didn't seem like anything could go wrong.
One day, however, and this event is very foggy in Adral's memory, he made a mistake. They were exploring a mine when a section of a cave collapsed, separating Adral from his brothers. As they tried to find a way through or around the wall, Adral ventured deeper into the cave, coming upon some sort of planar gate. That is all he remembers after that, except waking up outside the cave with his brothers, two days later . They explained to him that they found him face down in front of the gate, blood on his arms and unconscious. Unbeknowest to all all of them, this was the beginning of the end.
Adral had come into contact with a demon, and the demon had brought him into a pact. This fact is still unknown to Adral, except through assumption, for he does not remember the event.
Following that day, things began to change. Adral began exhibiting new abilities, ones that no druid should be able to express. In fact, he began to use those abilities over any other abilities, and after many years forgot the magic of the druids. Within three years, he had decided that his brothers were holding back and in the dead of night he split from them, hoping to leave them forever. This began a chase that would last over 20 years, as his two older brothers searched throughout Faerun for him.
Adral went many places, constantly improving his new found abilities. As time went on, however, he became increasingly more obsessed with his power and began using it to exert control over others, even corrupting his long time badger companion, Bael. A group of "friends" sprang up, amongst them were an Orc named Ergluk, an evil rogue human known as Balasar, and a half-Drow known in the common tongue as Tem. The half-drow was a curious one indeed, for while he would take them on journeys into the underdark (and that was where they met him, underground though not actually in the underdark), he managed to survive on the surface through use of headwrappings. He was mainly an outcast from underdark society, especially because of his halfblood and not full blood.
Adral eventually became obsessed with gaining ultimate power. As they journeyed through the southern regions of Faerun, Adral searched for a way to discover the origins of his power and ultimately become the master of such a thing or creature. They began doing their research, and in a fort that they acquired in the starspire mountains, Adral and his group prepared. Their plans were struck down, however, when one day, two druids appeared at their door, two druids who had been searching for Adral for over 20 years. They entered into the fort, and a great battle ensued that began to move up the mountain onto a cliffside. Ergluk and Balasar took on the two panthers that were Adral's brothers companions, while Tem, a wizard, and Adral, as a warlock, locked into spellcasting battle with his brothers.
The battle lasted for many hours, with neither wills being able to overcome the others. His brothers did not wish to harm Adral, but he did not view the fight in the same way, he had forgotten his blood ties. As Ergluk and Balasar lay dying on the cliff floor from their wounds from the panthers, just as the panthers lay dying along side Bael, Adral began channeling his energy to blast directly into the cliff side that his brothers stood on. Tem saw what he was attempting to do, and realizing that that would most likely kill everyone in the process, attempted to stop Adral. Adral blasted Tem in the chest, sending him flying off the mountainside. Adral then continued that blast into the cliff, sending his brothers plummeting hundreds of feet down the mountain to the steps of the fort that Adral had been living in. After the smoke cleared, his other companions were gone from the mountainside, and only Adral remained.
In that moment, something changed. In seeing the anguish in his brothers' face's as they were incinerated, Adral realized that he had lost something great. The demon had not completely taken control, and Adral was finally realizing that something had begun to corrupt him. He gave his brothers and his companions burials on the mountainside, and as a contingent of Paladins came up one pathway in search of the origin of the blast that they saw, he walked down another.
Stumbling aimlessly through the foothills of the Starspire mountains, Adral eventually wondered into the city of Zezesspun, where he found a monastery to the Old Order. He walked into the building knelt down in front of the leader of the order there, and confessed everything. The monk, in a compassionate view of the world, took Adral in and protected him from the Paladins that were now searching for him. The monk informally initiated Adral into the Order in order to hide him, and Adral began a one year rite of silence in examination of his life. Through this rite of silence, he cut himself off from his abilities, and began focusing on physical and mental toughness. He still held hopes of discovering what it was that gave him his power, but he would make himself strong enough before then in order to ensure that he would not be corrupted by such power ever again. After that year, satisfied that he was ready, the monk that had taken Adral in sent him off into the world to hone his abilities. After 3 months he was to return for a brief while to share what had happened, then once more leave.
Adral first traveled to pay his respects to his brothers, then took a ship from the city of Murann up to Baldurs Gate. He traveled in that region for two months, and then returned back to the Order to share with the master of the Order what he had learned of himself through his travels. He spent 5 more months learning of what it meant to be a monk, then his now good friend sent him back out into the world, telling him that it would be soon time to reawaken his abilities so that he could once and for all defeat whatever it is that corrupted him in the first place.
So that is where Adral is now. He sits at the fire near the friendly arm inn, holding a deadly secret, and a newly reawakened power. Will that power consume him, or will he defeat it once and for all?
Goals: To perfect his mind, body, and soul in such a way that he may be able to purify himself of the corruption that exists within him and defeat whatever entity has bound him into a pact.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts: Adral has just now activated his warlock abilities again. He is going to attempt to hide them while he trains, yet they will most likely manifest every once in awhile as they slowly progress in power and the right people may not see that. Possible evil organizations could contact him because of his evil past. An important note is that Adral is still technically very evil, he is only attempting to fight that evil. In the end, he could go either way, to good, or fall back into evil and be very formidable indeed.
A greater goal, however, is to control the demon that has him insnared. While he doesn't know exactly what he made a pact with, once he finds out, he knows he has two choices. To abide by its overall demands, to kill it, or to capture it and master it. He wants to learn of a possible way to do the final one. The question is, once he becomes the master of whatever he made a pact with, would he become purely good, or would he just become an even greater evil?
Paladins should always be weary of Adral, and with good reason. Since he technically is evil, Paladins should see him as such and any possible plot run ins with paladins I see as incouraged, especially with Adral's distaste for them.
I am just waiting for the moment where I can have Adral in a situation where his evil can snap in and he can cause some harm, whether through the assassination of an individual or what not.
