The Diary of Laerdan Stormsong

12 Flamerule, DR 1341

She said yes! Father and Laramir seem happy, though Mother says I'm too young to marry. Seventeen isn't that young...not when it's Elaneth. She's already thirty! If I waited any more, one of the other Tel`Quessir would have tried to capture her interest. Being human is still a fault to some of them.

Master Ilvar promised he would compose a song for our wedding if I ever managed to gather the courage to ask Elaneth for her hand. I guess he didn't really think I would do it. Now he'll have to come up with something! I hope he knows I'll be listening closely. He can't try teaching me to become a storyteller and then not expect me to listen to the stories, after all. I'm so excited I can hardly write this, but I need to have it down on paper while it's fresh!

28 Hammer, DR 1344

The Orcs are finally retreating. This was the eighth assault in three days. Their numbers, which at first seemed limitless, finally stopped. But Silverymoon did not escape unscathed. If Mother and Father were alive to see the burned buildings, or the faces of those they loved, forever locked in death's embrace...

We found her body surrounded by orc corpses. Elaneth, my beloved, did not go down without a fight worthy of any Tel'Quessir, but gone she is. My light, my only remaining family, torn from me by those savages! And to think, before all this, that I was arrogant enough to believe we could have peace with them! Elaneth will be laid to rest in the traditional Elven fashion, and my life...my life is over. There is no more joy in my heart, no more songs to sing. Elaneth was my reason for living.

We did it. Laramir led us, the Vengeful, after the orcs that took our beloved friends and family from us, and today we ended them. We lost eight more to their blades, but over fifty orcs will not slaughter another innocent ever again. My part in the battle was...strange. In the heat of the moment, blocked from the battle by my Elven companions, I simply began to sing. Cursing the orcs and their bloodlust, I felt them weaken slightly. It wasn't much, but it was enough. Laramir and the others tore into the brutes and decimated them. Not a single one from this raiding party survived.

Our vengeance is not yet sated, for orcs remain living, but it will have to be enough for now. We are low on supplies, and besides the dead to carry back and lay to rest, we have other wounded that we must also take care of. My skill at healing is minimal, and none of the Vengeful has any connection to the Court.

The Orcs are back again. None are surprised, but hope is beginning to fail. For the past two years, it has been siege after siege. Silverymoon cannot last forever. I have volunteered to leave and seek out allies that might be able to send help. Waterdeep is not that far off and my ability to mediate makes me a valid choice. That, and as some of the Tel`Quessir have been reminding me lately, I am human and therefore more likely to be well received in a city full of humans. They call me Sha`Tel`Quessir now...friend of the Elves. As if I have not been a friend, or family, to them my whole life.

I have been chosen to be the emissary to Waterdeep. Elves will go to other Elven cities, where a human would be unwelcome. Sometimes it surprises me still to think of myself as different than the People, even though I know that they will be around long after I am dust. My belongings, such as they are, are already packed. Master Ilvar has given me a lute, freshly made, to carry with me. I think he hopes it will help me put the events of the past two years behind me. I will carry it to honor him, but I do not think it will be of much help to me.

28 Hammer, 1347

What coincidences life offers us! Today is the anniversary of my wife's death, and also the day I finally concluded my mission to Waterdeep. For four long months I have traveled, and then negotiated, and finally the city has agreed to send help to Silverymoon. As for myself...I cannot bear to return to the city where my beloved died. I have my lute, and my wits, and my songs, and will make my way out of here. Perhaps I shall go north, towards Amn. There are lots of stories to be learned in a city of intrigue.

On a stranger note, if there could be such a thing after the other events of today, I met a woman, Llira, who insisted I play songs for her to dance to tomorrow evening. There is something familiar about her, though that should not be possible, given that I was raised as one of the only humans in a city of Elves. I think I will entertain at her party and use that as a guide to my future endeavors.

30 Hammer, DR 1347

Last night was one of the most bizarre nights I believe I have ever had. Llira did indeed have a gathering, and there was much dancing and singing. It seemed as if every bard in the city must have been there! When I wasn't playing, Llira or one of her attendants came to take me into a dance. At first I begged off, but Llira was most insistent, and again there was that something about her...

1 Mirtul, DR 1347

How is it that I can feel so elated, and yet so confused at the same time? Llira, as it turns out, is the Llira...the goddess of song and dance herself! After months of playing for her parties, she finally revealed herself to me and explained what was going on. I had not been playing in Waterdeep, as I suspected, but in the realm of Brightwater itself!

Llira had listened to me play growing up in Silverymoon. She said it was one of her favorite places in Faerûn to visit for music and revelry, though she had to take the form of an Elf to do so. We had even danced together at the Highharvestide festival in the year prior to my marrying Elaneth!

The goddess has helped lighten my heart over these past months, and I will devote myself to bringing the laughter and joy she has returned to me onto others as well. I am renewed, and will continue my travels. There are many places in need of song and dance to help lighten spirits.

17 Elesias, DR 1347

I stepped off the boat into Baldur's Gate today. This city has recently seen much violence, and an entire section has been razed to the ground. But where there is strife, and hardship, there is opportunity. Mercenaries abound, both acting as the city's civil guard (these mercenaries are a large company called the Flaming Fist), and others that seem to roam the city freely, selling their skills for coin like mercenaries the world over.

I have taken room in an inn that holds some fame, the Elfsong Tavern. The haunting melody pierces my soul, and saddens me at the loss the ghostly singer must have felt. It echoes my own. But enough of that. Baldur's Gate, and in fact the entire Sword Coast, fairly resonates with expectancy. Great events are happening here, I can feel it.

Tomorrow I will head out and try to make some coin, and learn the lay of the land. There are songs here to write, and stories to be written, and I will not be left out.
