Background:
Born and raised to a tribe of Strongheard halflings that called their home in the Sunrise Mountains , Kayin began to demonstrate a strange link to the arcane as a child. His tribe believed this to be a byproduct of residing so close to the epicenter of Thayan power. Living just to the east of Thay, Kayin's tribe has grown to distrust and fear the Red Wizards. As a child he could move things and making small illusions... Naturally distrustful of all things magical, his people because to think of him as "different". He grew through most of his formative years in competition with other members of the tribe in the typical feats of strength and challenges common to the warrior hin, regardless of his "afflication".
Later in life, his tribe was threatened by the incursion of a Red Wizard of Thay, recently sent out to expand the influence of the Wizards. Deciding that having a foothold of power for the Thayan's within the borders of the tribe's land, they organized a raid in hopes of turning back the incursion and reclaiming their land.
Needless to say, they were met with much more resistance then they anticipated and the bulk of the hin war party was destroyed by the magic of the Wizard along with the blades of their knights. Kayin was found barely alive on the battlefield. As the Thayan Knights came through looking for survivors, they noticed that some of the magical trinkets they wore seemed to react to the small hin. Taking notice of this, he was healed and taken to their master. Seeing Kayin as an oddity, the Red Wizard decided to conscript him into slavery to use for various experiments.
Kayin served the wizard for over half a decade, performing menial tasks as well as being used in vile experiments to test out the effects of new spells the Wizard was researching. During one of these sessions, the incantation wasn't quite right and it resulted in a violent backlash against the Wizard, killing him and destroying most of his laboratory.
Seeing his chance to escape, Kayin gathered what magical baubles he could and stole away from the Enclave as quickly as he could. Not knowing the current whereabouts of his tribe and knowing that they would never take him back, Kayin decided to pursue wizardry himself, expanding on what he had picked up during his time in service to the wizard. Since he had no home, he wandered to the Sword Coast region in search of adventure and other wizards from whom he might learn to expand his knowledge of the weave.

Goals: Despite his troubled past, Kayin sees magic as a way to expand his own influence and make a name for himself in the Sword Coast region. Never knowing whom to trust, he follows his own set of beliefs, believing that "good" and "evil" are both too absolute. He seeks to expand his influence and become a wizard of some renown in the region to make up for the fact that he can never rejoin his own people.
