DM Darkshard's Swift Kills

~The Darkshard’s Swift Kills~
Image
Below are some basic guidelines, hardline rules, and goals for when I run roleplay events, some of which is shamelessly plagiarised without credit. Most of it is pretty standard but a few items – such as my rules regarding death in my events – are specific to me so please read if you wish me to DM for you.
MISSION:
The Darkshard wrote:As a DM, my main aim is to support and facilitate player-driven plots, stories and initiatives. I do not want you to merely be actors in “my” story, nor do I seek to be the director in yours. I want to help breath life into your world, and give value and meaning to your stories. With that said, I have my preferences like anyone else, and I aim to give particular attention to Baldur’s Gate itself, believing that the server namesake should have a starring role.

Furthermore, at the end of server time, I intend to ride forth on a black pillar of shadowy flame and begin the Final Battle between mortals and DMs, in which the world shall perish.
SIMPLE GUIDELINES AND RULES FOR DM DARKSHARD’S EVENTS:
• Death (Important): I find that nothing is more immersion-breaking than people being cut down, raised, and then immediately running off and being combat-capable once more. Therefore, if you die in one of my events, one of two things will happen:

1) Most of the time, I will rule that you are unconscious, badly wounded, near death or some other condition of not-quite-dead. In this case, you may be brought back after a small amount of RP from your companions. I will generally still require them to burn a Raise Dead/Resurrection resource of some kind – be it spell, scroll or wand – though in some cases I may forego this if there is good “paramedic” RP and successful Heal rolls against my DC. After this, I will apply a temporary debuff (usually -2 to Strength, Dexterity or Constitution) that will last the duration of the event to represent that your recovery is not immediate.

2) In special circumstances (and I will usually warn you ahead of time), I will rule that you are, in fact, dead. Deceased. Snuffed it. In this case, not only do I require burning a normal Raise Dead/Resurrection resource, I also require full RP of the attempted spell with diamonds and holy water. After this, I will apply a temporary debuff that will last the duration of the event. If the material requirements cannot be met by your companions, then you must remain dead until either you can be raised at a Temple or the event ends.

Do not, under any circumstances, raise someone until any combat has ended and I have ruled on their condition. If you do, I will fugue them again and not refund the resource you burned.

• Do not rest: Unless I give explicit permission. For longer events, I will allow resting opportunities if there is a believable RP avenue for them. Recovering your strength may not necessarily require actual rest; you may just need some spinach like Pop-Eye.

• Be limitless: The game mechanics by no means define the real limits of what you can and cannot do (that is my job). Throw a chair, kick dust in someone’s eye, leap out a window, push that shelf up against the door to block it. I will try to facilitate whatever your imagination can concoct. Creative RP goes a long way toward tempering the difficulty of my events.

• Do not run: Without an RP reason for doing so. I need time to respond to your RP and prepare/make adjustments to the path ahead of/behind you. However, if the RP dictates it – and especially when combat starts – then by all means, run.

• Be patient: With me, and with your fellow players. Things will go wrong, always. There will be glitches and technical issues. RL will intervene. Do your best to roll with these punches.

• Forum: Use it for best results. I read all of it. Write-up IC accounts or rumours of your events. Continuing RP on the forum will result in extra rewards from me, and possibly plot continuance with more events in the same arc.

• Provide feedback: This is the only way I can really learn and improve as a DM. Let me know what I am doing right, and what I am doing wrong.
CHARACTER HOOKS AND PLOT REQUESTS:
EDIT: As of May I am no longer taking personal plot requests due to campaign demands.

~Troll Instigator~
("The Coast is Alive" 1)
Characters Involved:
Tharxos Kyros
Andwise Goodbarrel
Sna'z
Vicho

Synopsis:
A small troll army happened upon an adventuring party in the Troll Claws ford. With little hesitation, the party attacked and lured the troll force right down on top of them. They were promptly routed, though the trolls did not pursue them across the river. Regrouping swiftly and determined to deal with this threat, the party counter-attacked and defeated the force. More waves came, but by holding one side of the river, the party was able to repel them. They noted the trolls seemed unusually frenzied. The source of this soon became apparent as a huge troll instigator appeared, driving the smaller waves before him.

The party fought hard, and defeated the instigator with no casualties of their own.

Rewards/Penalties: Small xp rewards for all, slightly more to Tharxos for attempts at leadership and tactics.

~The Times are Tough~
("The Gate is Alive" 1)
Characters Involved:
Hagadom Haley
Brandon Redblade
Iralia Stillwater

Synopsis:
Three adventurers visited the Merchant's League in the docks of the Gate, one of them intent on returning stolen goods to Elad. Hagadom was disapointed, however, when Elad lowered the bounty per bag returned. The merchant insisted that times were tough with the League heavily committed to the reconstruction of the Palace District, and stated he had been forced to lower bounties paid to adventurers. Hagadom did not back down however, and negotiated the price back up.

The other adventurers, Brandon and Iralia, headed to the Elfsong afterward to drink and relax. The peace was interupted however, when a drunken sailor overheard Iralia's comments about his behaviour. She fled the scene to avoid any further trouble.

Rewards/Punishments: Small xp rewards for all, small gold reward for Hagadom.

~Ambush Underground~
("The Coast is Alive" 2)
Characters Involved:
Aerandir Seregon
Aldo Evra
Bjorn Skarsgaard
Delawyn Evra
Isendir Elin

Synopsis:
A party of four adventurers were delving deep into the gnoll caves when they were suddenly ambushed on all sides. Defeating the first wave of attackers but sensing more on the way, they tried to make a quick escape but immediately ran into a dead-end and were trapped. They fought a bottleneck defence, but were about to be overrun before a fifth adventurer - Bjorn Skarsgaard - appeared from nowhere and single-handedly cleared their flank. Together, they defeated the attack. The party, now five, pressed further to try and find a way back to the surface. Gnolls harried them at every turn, their ambushes becoming sharper as they learned from failure. Several party members were badly wounded.

Eventually, the party arrived at a narrow stone bridge across a dark ravine, blocked by an enormous gnoll occultist. They fought a brutal battle and defeated it. Studying the runes on the arch entrance to the bridge, one of the party noted they appeared to be for demon-binding. As they pressed on, they indeed found the powerful demon the occultist had summoned, and defeated it. Here, they discovered both a huge pile of treasure, and an escape route. They stuffed their pockets, and made good their escape.

Rewards/Punishments: Moderate gold rewards for all. Temporary debuffs to revived party members.

~Aggressive Negotiations~
("The Hive Concordant" Part One)
Characters Involved:
CesaKyariv KanTnub
Erek Tiondur
Fina No'ir'nui't
Gruk
Hyga
Lanthalosa Drekk
Pharaxes Morieth
Sithrain
Slyanmrim'ol d'l'Fyrrain
Triel
Val Mor
(I think some others who logged)

Synopsis:
A large party of individuals gathered under the loose leadership of Lanthalosa Drekk, all with varied motivations, but all somehow invested in the defence of Sshamath against the Alhoon. The party planned to fight their way into the Illithid Hive and "negotiate" with the Overmind - the elder brain at the heart of the Hive that serves as its de facto leader. Before embarking, the party discussed tactics for their assault, including formations and how to magically shield themselves from the Illithids' feared mind-affecting abilities.

As they approached the Hive, an eerie calm descended, and they were met in the passageway by an Illithid emissary. The emissary seemed aware of their intent, and warned them to turn around. They refused and entered the Hive, where fierce fighting began.

Though the party fought relentlessly, their planned tactics and formations fell apart in the narrow and confusing passageways of the Hive. It was not long before they began taking casualties, but they pressed on regardless. The Illithid defences seemed to simultaneously weaken and become more desperate as they approached the elder brain. They soon secured it.

Apparently outraged, the Overmind confronted them telepathically over their actions and the ruin of the Hive's defences. Its meaning soon became apparent, as the whole party heard the sounds of large undead force approaching. The party rallied, albeit with little time to prepare a defence. They blocked the stairs with Gruk and their duergar, and wave after wave of undead broke against this wall while the casters and ranged units pummelled them from the back. The enemies were numerous, but the party was well-equipped to repel this foe, and soon destroyed the attacking force.

Despite their contribution to its defence, the Overmind continued to be outraged at the party, claiming they had merely brought more attention and pressure from the Alhoon. The party negotiated well however, arguing that the Hive's best chance of survival lay with joining against this common enemy. The Overmind merely responded that Sshamath would "have its answer soon". With nothing more to be said, the party departed.

Rewards/Punishments: Decent xp rewards to all (slightly more to Lanthalosa whose initiatve catalysed the event) and a possible strategic boon to Sshamath. Temporary debuffs to revived party members, and possible unforseen consequences.

~Drow Hunt~
("The Coast is Alive" 3)
Characters Involved:
Konravian Drekk
Merrok Shadowstep
The rest of the server

Synopsis:
In a moment of sure insanity, a drow revealed himself outside the Friendly Arm Inn gates as a "prank". He barely escaped the volley of arrows from the wall. He immediately fled south assisted by the ranger Merrok, who used his wilderness training to good effect. The guards also responded quickly however, deploying along the Trade Way and calling up the Flaming Fist. The Fist pursued with an elite unit and their veteran sniffer dog, Perfect. This group was bolstered by adventurers from all over, including several from prominent factions, drawn by the rumours. They chased the fugitives to the lighthouse, and then further south.

Upon reaching the road south of Beregost, the group was forced to divide. Fist mercenaries secured the road, and took word to Amnian authorities in Nashkel to avoid any diplomatic incidents or border issues. Adventurers scoured the hills and headed into Durlag's Tower, while the remaining Fist interviewed witnesses and learned of the alleged accomplice, Merrok.

The drow escaped. It was surely his lucky day.

Rewards/Punishments: No rewards, unless raw animal fear counts. Merrok is now wanted for questioning by the Fist.

~The Judgement of Hael~
("The Gate is Alive" 2)
Characters Involved:
Hael Kross
Skunk

Synopsis:
After hearing he was wanted for questioning by the Flaming Fist over alleged assault and worship of Malar, Hael turned himself in to the headquarters in the Palace District. He was surprised however, to be arrested immediately on the additional charge of involuntary manslaughter. The hin named Skunk accompanied him as a defendant's witness. Beluarion question them both in an office, but seemed short on patience. Skunk hardly helped matters. In the end, Belaurion found him innocent of the earlier charges, but guilty of involuntary manslaughter and handed down both a fine and jail-time. Hael opted to pay a much heavier fine to lessen the jail sentence.

Rewards/Punishments: Decent xp to Hael for good sportsmanship and rolling with the punches, a small amount of xp to Skunk for tagging along. Hael was fined a hefty amount of gold.

~Terms and Conditions~
("The Hive Concordant" Part Two)
Characters Involved:
CesaKyariv KanTnub
Erek Tiondur
Groglan Glandor
Kar'Myr Dalharil'mtor
Konravian Drekk
Naravien Xilaben
Sithrain
Triel

Synopsis:
Two diplomatic parties each consisting of an illithid emissary and its guard arrive on the outskirts of Sshamath. One continues into the city to the Conclave, while the other meets with representatives of the Seventh Circle in Varalla's. Recognising some of the faces gathered, Xoth'aar the Emissary delivers his message that the Hive will not join with the rebel alhoon, whom it declares an abomination. Xoth'aar then relayed the Hive's conditions for the alliance: 1) Agents of the Seventh Circle must not trespass in the Hive beyond the trading enclave; 2) The Seventh Circle must provide compensation for damage caused by their recent intrusion, in the form of fifty slaves to rebuild.

As the highest ranking member present, Kar'Myr stepped forward to handle negotiations while the others contributed with questions and whispered advice. Groglan left quickly after Xoth'aar's comments about duergar thralls. While Kar'Myr did not attempt to lower the illithid's price, she negotiated hard to increase the return given to the Circle. Ultimately, Xoth'aar agreed that the Hive would deploy twenty illithid sorcerers, eight brain golems and eight intellect devourers to Sshamath's defence, once the conditions of the concordant were met.

The emissary departed, leaving the Circle to plan how they would find these slaves in time.

Rewards/Punishments: A small amount of xp to everyone who participated in the meeting, and a potential NPC ally for the Seventh Circle. Seventh Circle members will break the alliance if they set foot inside the Hive.

~The "Giant" Giant~
("The Coast is Alive" 4)
Characters Involved:
Deimos Bladesong
Sei

Synopsis:
Two adventurers were hunting giants in the foothills south of Nashkel. With so many other problems to worry about recently - not least of all war - the town had experienced few giant attacks. That was about to change, however, as a large, organised force of giants gathered on the hills above. Rather than retreat behind the walls of the town, the two adventurers faced off against them then and there. Surprisingly, they managed to stand their ground, killing many giants before the force retreated again. However, this brought only a moment's respite as they soon returned, this time with a "giant" frost giant in tow. Still the adventurers stood their ground, and the battle was long and epic. Unbelievably, the two adventurers brought down the behemoth and its vanguard, though both were left utterly drained.

Victories in a battle against such odds are rare indeed. Unfortunately, there were no witnesses to this feat, else the pair would surely be heroes of Nashkel.

Rewards/Punishments: A small amount of xp to both, and a tale to recount.

~Grunty~
("Sshamath is Alive" 1)
Characters Involved:
Dante De'Maquis
Merrok Shadowstep

Synopsis:
Dante and Merrok were enjoying a drink or three in the Gloura's Wings, when they decided to throw a few insults at the minotaur seated near them. The minotaur calmly laid down his drink, strode over to them and defensively introduced himself as Grunty, not "Mr Pugsley" as they alleged. Trying to make peace, the pair offered him a drink, which he accepted. He then sat down and challenged them both to a drinking contest. Despite taking two swigs to their one, Grunty drank them both under the table with little effort. He then left them both to pick up the tab, while Dante was maintaining a surprisingly coherent coversation with the tavern ceiling.

Rewards/Punishments: A small amount of xp to both.

~Poltergeist~
("The Coast is Alive" 5)
Characters Involved:
Anona Anu
Sei
Thalandon Astralius
Zveltana

Synopsis:
A party of adventurers got more than they bargained for when they went "vampire hunting" in the Haunted Mansion in Cloakwood. On the second floor of the mansion, they began arguing and bickering among themselves, but when some of the group made to leave they found the door locked and sealed behind them. The distorted voice of an apparently young girl began taunting them from the darkness, urging them to turn their argument bloody, and asking them to "play" with her. Fierce nightwalkers soon began attacking the group. With some difficulty, they fended them off, but the disembodied voice became furious at them "breaking her toys". Still the group disagreed on a course for their escape. Some wanted to find a way to open the door, while others sought to appease the spirit. It was a surprisingly long time before the group realised the house had windows.

Pulling back the curtains however, they found the windows to be boarded up, and their attempts to first bash and then burn them failed. The situation became urgent as a huge nightwalker rose up behind them, seemingly through the floor. Luckily, Anona's quick thinking to use a spear as a lever, combined with the extra strength of an enlarged Zveltana, easily pried the boards away and the whole group jumped without hesitation.

Some landed gracefully, others badly. Zveltana shattered her ankle, but Anona was able to repair it with a Regenerate spell. The voice continued to taunt them from the upper floor, singing rather morbid and gruesome children's songs. They lingered. The voice then announced it was coming down to see them. The door creaked open, and they heard the girl whisper right in their midst: "I'm here."

At that moment, the ground shook as a huge nightwalker began climbing up the cliff from the waves below, cold eyes set on them. They ran, but their retreat was in disarray, with most going in different directions, and some even staying to watch. A long and messy battle followed, as some were caught and others turned around to try and save their companions. In the end, all fell to the nightwalker's vicious swings.

When they awoke, in various states of pain and confusion, they found a ghostly girl standing over them. She thanked them for playing with her, then declared she was tired and bored. As the adventurers unsteadily got to their feet, she screamed at them to go away.

They wisely fled, shaken to the core by the poltergeist and their near-death experience.

Rewards/Punishments: Moderate-decent xp rewards for all. Slightly more to Anona for trying to keep everyone and everything together. Temporary debuffs to one fallen party member, and mental scars.

~Interloper~
("The Hive Concordant" Part Three)
Characters Involved:
Natalya Vaentsoss
Herran Hymm

Synopsis:
Under instruction from Kar'Myr, the Seventh Circle half-drow operative Natalya has spent considerable time on the surface learning what she can of recent political events and trying to identify potential targets for enslavement. She spoke to many people, both adventurers and locals, and learned much. With the cover story of looking for a friend she lost in the war, she elicted the help of Herran Hymm, who was only too eager to help a woman in apparent distress. She concentrated her investigation in Beregost, Gullykin and Nashkel.

In Beregost, she learned that almost all of the surviving displaced have returned to rebuild. She and Herran talked to several people, including Thunderhammer. They also witnessed strong Fist patrols in the town in addition to the Latherite guards. Thunderhammer explained that patrols had been stepped up in light of strange occurances in the town at night, and also rumours of drow active just south of them. When asked about the possibility of any refugees from Beregost being in Amn, Thunderhammer said it was unlikely, mentioning he'd heard rumours that Amn had "its own refugee problem". Herran observed this was likely due to the troubles in Tethyr.

In Gullykin, they found a similar story; all the surviving hin had returned to rebuild. While they were there, a detachment of Everesken rangers from Doron Amar passed through the town and headed south toward Durlag's. Mealir and Luthian followed soon after. The drow rumours were also rampant here it seemed, but between the hin militia and the Mathora, the locals were very confident that the town was secure even in its weak state.

Natalya and Herran arrived in Nashkel in time to see a caravan leaving, marked with the N.T.E motiff. By the banter of the guards, they were able to discern that the caravan contained aid and supplies destined for a town called Markhold, which neither had heard of. They went to the Northern Lights Inn and asked about both Markhold and the N.T.E, learning much about both. They resolved to try and meet with Delphinn Veil to ask about Markhold.

Rewards/Punishments: Naught but information.

~Stein-Heart~
("The Gate is Alive" 3)
Characters Involved:
Chathra De’Karanos
Lore Jeneson
Managarn Starsky
Rai Ku Kyntilla
Solaris Cult
Sjinn Draeth
Tox Ironfaar
Xanatos
Ylleri
(A bunch of others, but the server crashed before I could take down all the names)

Synopsis:
Mizzard the Green organised a tavern crawl in Baldur's Gate, with many adventurers answering his call for "stein warriors". They began at the Elfsong tavern, easily drinking their way through five rounds and only taking a few casualties. Mizzard then rallied his troops and they poured out onto the streets, singing songs about "annexing" every tavern in the Gate.

They moved on the Blade & Stars next, the group diminished to around ten of the more serious drinkers. There, Mizzard declared they would "drink till they owned the place", and the group proceeded to down another five rounds, taking many casualties this time. With the alcohol taking its toll, Mizzard revealed he knew where they could get "the bessht sshtuff" but that "only the worthiessht sshtein warriorssh sshhhould come!"

With that, he led the five bravest - Chathra, Lore, Managarn, Solaris and Xanatos - down to the old warehouse in the docks, where they were met by a number of shady looking figures, most with hoods and their faces covered. The shady types seemed suspicious of the group but were prepared to sell them their "product" anyway. All but Chathra (who had been cheating the whole time) were too drunk to realise something was obviously up. At that moment, the doors burst open behind them and the Fist entered. The shady figures vanished into the shadows and escaped notice. The Fist declared the five and Mizzard under arrest for running and participating in an illegal goods syndicate.

The fun-loving Mizzard, by now drunk out of his mind, declared open revolution and charged the Fist. He was quickly wrestled to the ground. Solaris, also completely drunk, defiantly told them she never murdered anyone, nor hid their bodies in the Cloakwood. She was also arrested. Chathra was allowed to leave, possibly because she was both sober and a Red Wizard, which made her more trouble than she was worth. Lore remained loyal to his glorious "leader" Mizzard to the end, and Managarn and Xanathos were also caught in the net. All went to jail.

Lore, Managarn, Solaris and Xanathos were all released in the morning once they had sobered up. Mizzard the Green remains behind bars with numerous charges to his name.

Rewards/Punishments: Small amounts of xp to all, somewhat more to the four who ended up in the Fist jail. Many a hangover.

~Silver Soul~
("Blood and Jealousy" Part One)
Characters Involved:
Hoihe Dacino
Laitae Lafreth

Synopsis:
Hoihe sought a meeting with his mentor, the young dragon Sarah Silverstone, to procure a vial of her blood; a requisite reagent for the ritual to cure his own blood of the curse that afflicts it. With Laitae's help, he was able to teleport to the Earthfast mountains, though her lack of familiarity with the destination cast them a little further than intended. As they began the hike, they soon realised they were being hunted by a frost giant and his ice wolf pack. They did their best to keep ahead of him on the trail, but continually ran into yetis fiercely defending their territory. Hoihe was unable to withstand the constant ambushes, and was knocked out. It was only by the quick thinking and surprising endurance of his loyal friend that he was able to survive, as she carried him up the mountain under a Greater Sanctuary spell.

Laitae sought refuge in a high altitude cave, and was able to rouse Hoihe once more. Once his confusion subsided, Hoihe was able to recognise the carvings in the cave as emblematic of the Silverstone clan. Both Hoihe and Laitae also recognised the fact that it was snowing indoors was a good indication of a silver dragon living here. Hoihe confirmed it to be Sarah's home via a Sending spell. With the help of Invisbility, they slipped past the remainder of the yeti guardians.

They found Sarah in dragon form in her lair, accompanied by a dragon-blooded elf named Ashalon. After a long conversation, Hoihe learned Ashalon was Sarah's "other" apprentice and therefore his quasi-brother; one who could apparently trace his bloodline to this very clan. He came across as arrogant and rash, and seemed offended by the presence of Hoihe and Laitae. They also learned he was here for the same thing Hoihe was; a vial of Sarah's blood, which he needed for his ascension ritual to become a full member of the Silverstone clan.

Sarah declared that only one could leave with what they sought, and the other would have to wait one year before being re-tested. She tested each by subjecting them to her ice dragon breath, that this would determine who had the truest "silver soul". Both stood their ground beneath her onslaught, and it was a tight contest. But Hoihe fared somewhat better in the cold, Ashalon buckling to one knee by the end.

Hoihe had his reward. But Ashalon seemed infuriated by the outcome. He promised Hoihe had not seen the last of him.

Rewards/Punishments: Decent xp to both, a vial of dragon blood for Hoihe's ritual. Temporary debuff to Hoihe when he fell, possible unforseen consequences.
